@@SleepiAbyss Is it tho? Can't say I've never heard anyone's voice being that muffled while wearing a Spider-man mask before. I mean, unless that mask was made of thick fabric.
@biorose1210 That's because Spiderman's voice is usually recorded afterward in a studio and run through a filter to make it sound the slightest bit muffled. In this one, they obviously just had the actor deliver his lines through the actual mask. Not only does the mask muffle the sound, but it prevents the actor from opening his jaw properly, which makes him even harder to understand.
@@biorose1210 That's actually not a bad idea to have a muffled mask voice. It can explain why none of Peter's friends recognize him by his voice when they have interacted with him as Spidey many times. The mask simply muffles his voice too much for it to be recognizable. The problem here comes from the complete lack of emotion by the guy playing Peter. He has that quippy tone, but he doesn't exude that cocky, overconfident feel that Peter has as Spidey, mostly to distract his enemies and hide his fear. What's worse, being defeated by a spandex wearing goofball, or a spandex wearing goofball that makes defeating you look easy? The second one is easily more humiliating and rage inducing for his villains.
The "Make A Wish" segment of the story is directly adapted from the Spider-Man short story "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" and completely butchers it. In the comic it is not until the final page where the bomb is dropped that the kid is terminally ill. It is a somber ending that leaves a heavy impact on the reader. It is a story all about showcasing how far Spider-Man is willing to go in order to bring joy to someone in their final moments, even willing to give up his most precious secret. It is not a story about guilt tripping Spider-Man into getting over his dead girlfriend (Gwen had already been dead for a decade by the time the story was published).
The actor for Harry wasn’t a groomer. It’s the guy who voices and in the green goblin suit who’s a creep. Thought I should point that out bc I feel bad for the actor playing Harry, everyone’s getting them confused and calling him a creep when’s he’s not and the actual groomer is pretty much getting away with it
this actually sucks, just casually blasting sexual misconduct allegations to your large RU-vid platform without even doing the most surface level cursory research into the situation. double sucks given that they did not issue any sort of apology or correction after numerous comments pointing this out, has convinced me to not take this creator seriously moving forward
You know what I liked about Andrew Garfield's performance in Spiderman: No Way Home? He played Peter as still really hurting over Gwen's death, but it wasn't the only thing he was capable of feeling. He was still able to quip, and be interested in things, and laugh. Movies act like the death of someone important in a character's life is the focal point of their personality, and they lose all their other character traits. In real life that's actually a sign that the person is suffering from Complex Grief and needs some psychological help. Don't get me wrong, death of a loved one is always going to hurt, but it doesn't strip you of your personality and turn you into a brooding husk forever. You go through a gnarly period of depression, but you heal and you live your life. This movie doesn't have a deep and complex understanding of grief, but Andrew Garfield did.
On top of that Peter seems like the type of person who has a resilient response to grief, he's literally lost people left and right since the beginning, even before his story starts, yet he still manages to be a jokester and try to help and heal his criminals. It doesn't mean that he doesn't care for the people he's lost, he just keeps moving forward bc that's what they'd want
Yeah I mean there's those scenes at the end of TASM2 where they montage through the seasons and Peter just standing there by her grave and besides the obvious that makes those scenes of grief better than this entire TWO HOUR movie (Andrew Garfield's STELLER performance, the beautiful cinematography showing the changes in seasons, etc etc.) But it's also right at the end after Peter has that beautiful conversation with Aunt May (btw where tf was aunt may in this movie) about finding a better place for the memory of those we've lost rather than just dwelling on it in dire depression (this entire fucking movie) Peter listens to Gwen's speech and goes back to being Spider-Man because that's what she would've wanted and he continues to inspire that young kid instead of just crushing his dreams(like this "Spider-Man ddi to a dying child) even when he feels out of inspiration. The fact that I'm referencing the apparent worst spidey film to show how absolute shit this movie is is just sad
Andrew's performance (and that suit) both deserved such a better script and I'm really glad they were able to get that in No Way Home Those movies aren't nearly as bad as some ppl act like but they had the potential to be way better
This feels like if Andrew Garfield's spiderman was pretending to be Tom Holland's spiderman, but also they've never met, and Andrew doesn't know how to act.
I got so mad when I could hardly see the spiderman suit in some shots like ?? Maybe just have him fight on rooftops so there's an excuse for him to be in the sun or sumn
@@uniquenewyork3325like I get the silhouette entrance, but usually the character will step in a light to show who's talking While he just standing in the dark quipping all the time😅
It's sad that this film got so much hype, even after all the racism and (alleged) creepiness, when there are better and more humble directors making so many cool fan films. If the idea of fan films piqued your interest, please, don't let everything about this keep you away from the community 😭
One of the first things I learned in film school is that one of the main reasons that student films get rejected from film festivals is because of bad sound design.
@@L1feisgoodfriend I don’t know Gavin but as soon as Cooper said “savant” I noticed a pattern. Also cause I’m obsessed with tommy wiseau who is constantly called a business savant (where?! WHERE IS HE BUSINESS SAVVY?! HE SUCKS AT BUSINESS!!!)
Typically when someone thinks they are a savant and are super original with fresh new ideas that the brainwashed masses simply couldn’t come up with themselves, it’s just someone subconsciously copying two or three ideas they have seen and sticking them together in a setting that doesn’t support them
Every video is just Cooper giving into his ADHD impulses and instead of editing them out, he keeps them in. He still gets to the end of the story every time. That's why I love him!
As an apologist for Andrew Garfield’s Spidey specifically in the “Amazing” duology, it’s wild how icy & empty the Gwen x Peter dynamic is in this movie compared especially to the endearing & sweet chemistry Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield had in those films which shined as some of the best parts of them.
Yeah it helps when the actors actually love each other. During those scenes with Gwen and Peter I was thinking the entire time "Are they on the verge of breaking up? They seem really unhappy together".
feel like there's not enough people talking about how good the interactions between peter and harry were. for harry being such an obviously shoe-horned in character, they really made his dynamic with peter interesting. at least in my eyes.
This movie has singlehandedly tainted the reputation of Spider-Man fan films, which sucks because a lot of other fan films are WAY better than Lotus despite being made on a fraction of its budget (or no budget at all.)

Hey HUGE CLARIFICATION here 12:26 the guy who plays the ACTUAL Green Goblin is the groomer not the guy who plays Harry. 1:26 And Warden Wayne was referring to BLERD Vision a popular comic instagram account for Black nerds (which is what BLERD means) so he was calling a popular black creator the N-word
It was so funny because I remember the producer Younis, Gavin’s former best friend was accusing people on Twitter for being pedo’s yet his co-workers turn out to be one 😂😂😂
Important thing to note, Harry’s actor was not accused of Grooming. The Green Goblin actor was (also made some comments about “taking off the gangsta belt” when confronted about the racist text Gavin and Warden made) But also, theres been unconfirmed rumors that Gavin deliberately had Sean drink actual alcohol to keep him drunk all the time while filming his scenes as Harry. It got so bad that after filming had wrapped, Sean deleted all social media and ceased contact with the crew, and refused to show up for the premiere when it happened (As far as I’m aware Sean is still recovering, doing better, but not completely out of the woods)
Crazy and also why? Its not as if it helped anything I didnt even think he was drunk or drugged seeing him so that is just insane and he cant even imply it helped the character. What a crazy bastard and i hope the actor is ok
There’s one instance in this film where the bad lighting is infuriating. In the dream scene with Peter and Gwen, where Gwen rips open his coat to reveal the red Spider-Man suit, the logo on the suit is shrouded in darkness, making it really hard to see. It would have been a very good shot had Gavin actually lit it properly.
I think the biggest problem of Spider-Man Lotus is its pretentiousness. Gavin didn't make this movie because he really loves Spider-Man and wanted to explore the character even further. He made this movie because he wanted to prove he could do better than Marvel or Sony. It's an amateur film but I'm sure he was CONVINCED this was an Oscar-worthy movie. There is no humility in Spider-Man Lotus' creative decisions. Everything feels made out of pretentiousness.
Here’s my pitch to Gavin: Hey, if you wanted to make the film about Peter feeling guilty about her death, then how about this: open the film with the action sequence, but make it not the focus, make his breathing, his physical/mental state the focus. Throughout, we get snippets of a previous fight, with civilian bystanders, where we can see Gwen getting hurt from rubble or some sort of accident. The memories throw him off a bit, but he still manages to win. And then he gets a voicemail from someone that tells him Gwen died in the hospital. We can see him collapse, wallow, maybe a montage? And then some dialogue with Aunt May or Harry to unpack and process his feelings. In that conversation, let him talk about how happy he was in the relationship. Later, put some flashbacks in the dream sequence so we can see that happiness before the whole “you killed me” thing. He wakes up, wallows again. The rest of the film is him going through life, grief is affecting him, action sequences and a climax I can’t think of right now in between, resolve the film with him overcoming his grief, moving forward even though he misses Gwen.
funnily enough from a purely comic book stand point Gwen's death didn't initially shake Peter as much, he was sad yes, but her death only strengthened his resolve as Spiderman, he already had somebody close to him pass because of his choices. I think it was only comic books after that went into the whole depression arc Peter had
It’s not just the lighting, it’s also the fact that they haven’t color corrected bright enough. I keep having to check my phones brightness every time a shot of the film comes up.
I edit some of the scenes to brighten up but it’s not that good but it’s much better than this. Seriously I have my brightness down so I either forget I already brighten my phone or it doesn’t change anything.
I think the worst part about this other than the racism and the fucked upness up the rest of the cast is that a lot of the suits looked good the person they chose for Gwen was good. Shockers suit and Spidey's suit was so slick and clean and the fact it was used for as bad of a movie as Spider-Man: Penis is generally heartbreaking.
the person they chose for gwen didn’t even try to act she just said her lines. i mean i don’t blame her for being disinterested, but they could’ve chosen someone who was willing to pretend to care lol
Dude literally took the worst parts/ mopey sad shit from the older movies - and made that this entire film. AND THEN said he was doing something different 😅😂
To be completely honest, I’m amazed they were even allowed to crowdfund a fan film of a Disney owned franchise, when all the other studios has seriously clamped down on that.
So apparently, the Jon Watts message was faked, so he may not be *as* egoistical, but still pretty egoistical in thinking he had never before seen take on Spider Man. Those racist messages are also still real.
So, I was actually trying to figure out why this film was called "Spider-Man: Lotus" in the first place. Apparently, the lotus can be a symbol of "strength, resilience, and rebirth", which I guess sums up the message of the movie.....the problem is that when you're trying to connect your movie's title to the message of the movie, you probably should include the subject of the title in the movie, and make it clear enough to the audience on what that symbolism is. And the damn thing is that it wouldn't even be that hard to include in this case; hire an actress for Aunt May, have her be into botany, make her talk about how lotuses sink into muddy waters during the night, but still rise back up at day break while remaining clean, and boom! You have instantly given your audience a subtle enough way of connect the title of your movie to the core message of your movie. But obviously, that is not the case for the film. It was clear that Gavin thought of the film's basic plot first, did a quick google search of what could be symbolic of Peter rising from grief, and just stuck to that symbolism without ever putting it into his film. And the damn thing is, MCU Spider-Man was able to this so much better with their movie titles. Homecoming; an obvious reference to the homecoming dance itself, but also to the idea that Spider-Man was finally "home" with the rest of the MCU. It also gives a clear indication on the tone of this movie, being a highschool coming of age film. Far From Home; obvious reference to Peter's vacation across Europe, and ties into the "Home" naming convention from the previous film, but also references Peter feeling pressured by everyone to be the next Iron Man when he can't be that. No Way Home; once again uses the "Home" naming convention of the previous two movies, is a reference to the villains being taken from their home universes, as well as Peter's previous way of living being forever lost, as well as him making the ultimate sacrifice in order to fix everything. These are all movies that audiences can infer the meaning of within the films themselves. Spider-Man Lotus is a name that was chosen because the director was being extremely pretentious.
Pro tip: if your movie's plot revolves around one of the main character's loved ones getting killed, keep the focus on that character instead of switching it to another one of their loved ones getting killed. It gets repetitive
I think this film’s major problem is that he was too concerned with making it “comic book accurate” and he completely forgot that people make new creative decisions that stray from the comics for a reason. The new movies are not “garb” for doing that. The other major problem with this movie is the angst lmao. There’s so much of it. Like having an angsty film isn’t terrible, but it can’t be the whole movie lol
This is so uncomfortable to watch! I've never heard of this fan film before, but holy shit. It is so bad. The writing, acting, directing, lighting, etc. It's all so bad. I feel so bad for the people that donated money for this to happen.
I disagree. To say that everything about this fan film is terrible is a disservice to the vfx team and the costume designers who worked hard to meet expectations. They had nothing to do with the controversy and did the best with what they had
@@acacia_alexanderThat I’d have to agree with. I’m sorry if I misunderstood your comment, I just get kind of upset when people hate on the vfx team and costume designers because they all seem like really nice people who didn’t know about Gavin and Warden’s actions and really tried their best
@@fegreninja7197 No worries. I agree. I wasn’t even taking the controversy into account, but from a filmmaking standpoint, the script and storyline is really weak. I’m sure they tried their best but the acting could have been better too. For what it’s worth a lot of the VFX were good and the costumes were good too.
The fact that the dude playing Spiderman acted dramatic and sad bc he knew something bad was going to happen. That pains me bc that is one very basic rule of acting is that even when you know what's going to happen you have to act like you don't know what is going to happen.
GJK: "I can write better than then the MCU because I am a reeeaal Spider-Man fan."😎 *proceeds to have Joss Weadon, "He's right behind me, isn't he", "Well, that just happened" type dialog*
To be more fair to him than he deserves, that “Joss Whedon” dialogue you just described? That’s also known as “classic Spider-Man dialogue”. Peter Parker is one of the quippiest heroes out there to the point that people who interact with him immediately know something’s wrong/he’s being impersonated as soon as Spider-Man _stops_ quipping. Heroes tend to say punchy lines (and often literal punchlines) while punching bad guys (not just in Marvel either). It’s just really unfortunate that we got a bunch of movies about those types of heroes in a row (with the exception of the Thor movies because as much as I love his himbo characterization, he can keep that while still being played straight as someone who doesn’t make one-liners).
@@kaitlynmorgan4613 It’s something unavoidable with the character ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I seriously do agree with you that this is a perfect opportunity to make fun of this idiot, all that bragging and posturing just to make such a bad movie is hilarious. Absolutely do come at him with “ha you hypocrite”, but it would admittedly have more fangs if he’d made a movie about, say, The Hulk yet did the quippy humor. It was a very stupid thing for him to degrade MCU for its quippy humor knowing he was going to make a Spider-Man fan movie. It’d be like saying the MCU is shitty because it breaks the fourth wall too often _while prepping for a Deadpool fan movie._ So it seems like we understand each other, no worries.
I mean they’re talking to friends who talk that way with them too. I’m not defending them but I’m just saying it’s weird their friends who also say the n word with them are the ones who betrayed them? It’s just weird
It's bold to say we "learned" Gwen Stacy died in the scene after the title credits because I could not understand a damn word of that muffled voiceover and I only understood what happened from your recap
My favorite part was the dueling turtle-neck shirts, sported by Peter & Harry. Peter even goes one step further & adorns his turt (what we in the turtleneck game call turtlenecks), w a beige windbreaker. Nothin' but class.
The sad part is that there are so many good actors and directors who don't get the same traction. It's giving Netflix cancelling good shows and making more After movies.
They share characteristics with a certain art student who got rejected from an art school for sucking at perspectives, and then went on to become racist premium.
He said Jon Watts’ Spider-Man movies were bad, but Homecoming is SUCH a Spider-Man movie (if that makes sense). It captures his struggle near perfectly, as a teenager the way the actors act is spot on, the action was decent, it was faithful to Spider-Man as a character. And ACTUALLY gave him development over the course of the movie UNLIKE SPIDER-MAN LOTUS
Yeah but the problem with Homecoming is that the character development he got at the end of the movie gets immediately erased in the next film, only to regain it again later in the last movie. Another thing i don't like is how they wrote the side characters, Ned is basically a soulless gag character with zero development, Michelle gets no development as well, same thing with Flash, they could've done something more interesting with him, showing us him cyberbullying Peter everyday and being jealous of the fact that Liz likes Peter (because in the comics one of Flash's love interests is actually Liz Allan), maybe making him being regretful of his actions at the end after Liz made him realize that he was being too much of a douchebag after the Washington Monument events in order to become a better person and get actual character development in the next film or something, so many missed opportunities man.
@@RedDeath2001 people alwyas say that like infinity war and endgame didn’t happen and this man wasn’t riddled with PTSD and trauma during Far From Home💀
This is such a stupidly small thing that annoys me about this movie, but I hate how Spider-Man’s voice sounds muffled through his mask. Like, he sounds like he’s eating it. I don’t know what the real Spider-Man movies do to make that not the case, but the director really should’ve taken notes.
Listening to Spider-Man talking through his mask and wondering if the budget really was blown on CGI and they couldn’t afford ADR… you literally can’t see his mouth. It’d be so easy to replace the dialogue 😭
He definitely thought he didn’t need to “waste money” on a gaffer but good lord did he really need one. Gaffs are the guys who light. And they’re really good at it.
Watching this actually helped a lot, I want to get a degree in filmmaking and hearing you talk a bit about what makes a good/ bad director, undertones, lighting, sound editing, all of that jazz really is nice. Just to hear it in a comprehensible way with a fun tone. Also I’ve done nothing but watch your videos for like 4 days because I just love the way you talk, reminds me a bit like myself and since I’m amazing you by extension are too
Hollywood this is why you actually give writers and actors actual contracts with benefits because people like gavin and warden will seize the opportunity of the SGA-AFTRA stike to promote their "films"
Hi Cooper I've been to film school too, one of the graded projects was all about lighting. It's kind of super important, I looked at what great lighting was and how they did it, and any subsequent projects were scrutinised by myself. A good filmmaker should consider every shot, the lighting, the blocking, the mise en scene It's hard, but it's the effort all great filmmakers will put in to their art.
I watched “secret to my success” starring Michael J. Fox and the way he was always jumping around I was like “he reminds me of someone…” then I realized that he totally should have played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in his youth.

i recognized a lot of the stuff in this movie from the comics, but its just sad to see how awfully they were translated into this film. peter has a few comics where he records messages to dead gwen stacy, and its emotional and feels personal. theres a short comic of spiderman visiting a kid, showing him tricks, telling him stories, and even revealing his identity to the kid, but the comic ENDS by showing the audience spiderman sadly walking away from the building which is actually a children's hospital. after all that, it tells the reader that the kid had leukemia, and that he died shortly after. especially with the leukemia kid, i feel like there were missed opportunities with the storytelling and pacing of this film. im not a film buff but id be damned as a Film Weirdo if i didnt know what i was talking about
Oof. This is a real shame for everyone involved who wanted something really good. This needs MAJOR MAJOR help from so many aspects. There’s a reason movies and shows have so many departments. It’s to make things thoroughly thought out, to go through lots of different heads to check for issues. Huge issue with quality control.
Grim dark has harmed our society so deeply, we need to teach as a class in art school that the watchmen IS NOT A GRIMDARK STORY AND DOESNT APPLY TO ACTUAL SUPERHEROS
Grim dark works for certain characters like Ghost Rider, Punisher, Deathstroke, Wolverine, Evil Ernie and certain 2000AD strips oh and Lobo....Well no, Lobo would be dark but funny, so not completely grim dark, but it doesn't work for characters like Spider-Man at all, unless someone did a good adaptation of Kraven's Last Hunt, or if they did a story focused on Carnage, who by all rights is a very dark character.
For $100,000 I expect the scenes to have proper lighting. But my guy was too busy being racist, hiding a groomer and badmouthing the actresses of the film to give us good lighting.
I think the idea of Shocker wiggling his arms is supposed to be that his gauntlets are making him vibrate, but they couldn't actually do any good VFX to make it look like they were vibrating.....so they just fake it by having him look like he's pretending to have Parkinson's disease. Like you said earlier in the video, if they know they don't have the skills to do an effect, don't do it with a worse version of that effect.

Wow, that is bad. I liked Scarecrows though, Cooper. I think it's cool that your friends and family made a movie with you and it's on a streaming channel. I hope you make more movies.
The idea behind using "Spider-Man: Blue" and "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" was a brilliant concept on paper, but I think my biggest issue with it was Gavin's direction and execution of that concept in writing. The narration felt way too on the nose and only really works in a written medium (like in comics or novels). The voice-over took the punch from many emotional beats away and made me lose interest entirely. It also seems like the casting went off the look of the actor rather than the actual ability. While they all look picture-perfect for their roles, most of the time they feel rather stiff. Whether that's their fault or just a result of Gavin's poor direction is uncertain, personally, I think it's the latter. I don't think a Spider-Man movie needs action to be good, but I think the action scenes were poorly shot and could have been much more entertaining. The goal for a story like this is to not make the audience feel like they need a "final battle" to be invested in the movie, but rather, be so moved by the story that they are brought to tears by the bond between Peter and the boy, and glued to Peter's journey of grief and self-discovery. The drama felt more like a cheap soap opera rather than anything moving.
There is an episode of the 1990s Spider-Man series that adapted the same source material as this movie, and he wasn't just trauma-dumping on a sick child. In that episode, the kid was a little girl named Tiana, and while Spider-Man told the girl his origin story, he showed her his cool webshooters and even made her a little swing out of webs she could play with. He wasn't just SAD, he was a person capable of reflecting on the good and bad parts of his past and thinking of his future.

Either start with gwen already dead or kill her at the end when we’re actually attached to her character, if you want to have a movie about Peter dealing with Gwen’s death then I think you can’t have her in it as an actual character, she needs to be something that haunts or follows Peter as the biggest mistake he’s made, so maybe like him thinking he sees her in a crowd or I could even see a couple flashbacks but she should more be treated more like Captain Stacy in the beginning of TASM2 (something THAT movie just ignores and tries to double back as foreshadowing later on) but giving her 5 minutes to project her character and expecting us to care about her death not only just ruins her character entirely since it’s almost non existent, it perpetuates the stereotype of Gwen being poorly written in many of her adaptations, and this guy thinks he’s a “real” Spider-Man fan
I appreciate you making this video. Reminds me of the best advice i've heard when it comes to creating art from alan moore. He basically said if you want to get better at what you do, take the time to see or read badly made art. Recognising and understanding what makes art bad sharpens your ability to know what makes something good beyond just liking it.

I could genuinely forgive the lighting due to budget. But good writing and character building is for free. The interactions between two people feels like they were in two different rooms. There’s no emotion for the viewer. If you never watched Spider-Man and this was the first one you watched. You’d never understand why you should care at all for any of the characters. Like someone dying in a movie should bring emotion to the viewer. They didn’t even have to show. They could’ve shown later on for build up. But needed to give the viewer time to connect with at least one character.
I very much agree with what you said about the story but the lighting is still so important to the overall mood and watchability of the movie. The sun is free. A few rings lights and shades could at least improve things a lot while still being within budget.
You could easily set up lighting equipment for like $10. They could've spent the money for like.. 3 different lights. I've seen High School Student's films lit better than this with not even $100
