5 Parsec from Home / 5 Leagues From The Borderlands (Scifi/Fantasy versions of the same rules) is a solo wargame which places a small adventuring party out on the edge of the map against a handful of threats chosen at the start of the campaign to reflect whatever minis you own. Excellent minis agnostic choice for people with a lot of wargaming and D&D minis. Good for casual players, painters, and collectors. The Silver Bayonet is a horror sibling to Frostgrave/Stargrave (similar system plus same author). It places squads of Napoleonic infantry versus vampires/werewolves/cthulhu monsters. Good for competitive and casual players, painters, diorama makers, collectors. Space Weirdos / Sword Weirdos (Scifi/fantasy) is a minis agnostic skirmish game with an extremely low model count (75 pts will give around 4 models, 125 will give around 6), and a very frenetic energy. Platonic beer & pretzels game. Good for casual players & painters. Pulp! is a skirmish game aiming for the feel of a 1920s pulp novel. Build a team of adventure archeologists, mobsters, superheroes, raygun gothic aliens, or martial artists. Good for competitive or casual players, painters, diorama makers.

The latest Warhammer controversy about Custodes has another aspect that is of concern. Looking at RU-vid videos, I feel like a lot of non-hobbyists are jumping on the bandwagon of criticizing Games Workshop for the sake of views. Many of these content creators are ones I have never heard of in the Warhammer context. I am uninterested in the opinions of non-hobbyists regarding my hobby.

This will be a historical footnote for Games-Workshop, but what I don't want it to be is World of Warcraft 2.0... A quick story, used to play a lot of magic and then WoW came out and the card store looked like a ghost town after that. I wasn't into the idea of an MMORPG I thought Role Playing Games were something you did with your friends. But yeah, it just was a big wake up at how fair weather people could be. I want people to keep hobbying. If that means leaving Games-Workshop and trying other things, okay let's go. But I think if they weren't 90% of the market share, I think that they would have approached this with more grace and caution - Cal

Here’s a somewhat obscure one that really really tickles my painting itch - it’s called Burrows & Badgers. A single couple in the UK run it (Oathsworn miniatures) and you have skirmish games with your own warband of anthropomorphic animals. If you liked Redwall or the old Disney Robin Hood as a kid, you’ll love this. I bring it up because it’s very fun in casual play, and the models are a true painter’s dream with appropriate texture (fur) but also smoother areas for armor or shields or stuff. They’re also posed to be very painter friendly. The only downside I’ve found is….finding the opponents. It’s really niche but you can have a lot of fun with it if you get a small group started

I did a quick googly search on them, I immediately sent the link to one of our mates who plays Frostgrave and Stargrave with us and he was making up an animal kingdom warband for Frostgrave and that got me excited to want to do the same. Burrows & Badgers minis has totally gotten me excited I wouldn't mind using those models for a whole warband myself especially since they've got great costumes and props that go with them ~Sunny

Battletech has its own controversies going on. Be careful, you may find the same issues over there as well. It’s still an option of course. I have some Battletech and enjoy the game too. I say this as someone with battle mechs on my painting bench right now

@@WhatareyouPaintingnow Makes sense to me. It might be something fun for you both to look into. Some of the cult like aspects of the Adepticus Mechanicus and other themes around lost technology seem to have been taken from Battletech.
As far as skirmish games with lore heavy stuff, you should check out Malifaux. Wyrd games has fantastic models and Malifaux doesn’t use dice and instead uses cards, and it’s just a great mash of themes. I love this game, and hope you’d like it too.

If you’re looking for an anime inspired miniature game with really nice looking models with more variation built into the game (smaller skirmish size game with less repetition in models in general) I’d recommend Corvus Belli’s Infinity game. It’s a very reaction-oriented playstyle game with aspects of risk on both the attacker and defender side of every action, and has a great cyberpunk feel to the whole franchise. A lot of the mechanical styling comes from anime (Ghost in the Shell, Bubblegum Crisis, Evangelion, etc.) and is very unique in comparison to other systems out there. The models are also very well sculpted, dynamic, and have great variety throughout the line, and the idea of proxy use is built into the game rules inherently. If there’s one issue with the game (and I don’t actually think it’s bad - their sculptors are great) is that the majority of models are still metal minis. Their prices, however are still pretty competitive with other games out there and since an average game is between 10-20 models, it doesn’t break the bank to start.
So I know about the sculpts but I don't know about the game, so I may as well say the line... Sorry if we sound a bit repetitive but, we felt it would be disingenuous to recommend games we haven't played. But I have painted a few they are bit to realistically scaled for my painting preference but they are very, very cool models. I really like the concept they got going, I think their whole idea of why everything is skirmishes is great. It's kind of a WWI situation where you can't do anything major as that would cause an massive incident but a couple of guys here and dudes there, that can fly under the radar - Cal

I don’t think I’ve heard that before about Infinity (and I definitely didn’t notice it when working on models myself), but I’ll have to keep it in mind the next time I work on some. Let's face it. GW doesn't have the monopoly for nothing, they are like no other company, as much as people like to complain, they are irreplaceable, and I am not saying it's a bad thing
I like One Page Rules because it streamlines the rules and makes it less complex, less to remember and gives you a chance to retaliate instead of getting wiped out turn 2. On the controversy du joir, I'm more upset with GW lying and blocking and censoring those who disagree. Can't say I'm a fan of that.
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow I suppose my biggest "beef" with 40k as a system is the complexity. The secondary objectives, especially the randomness of it is what makes me not want to play the game. I want a simple singular or maybe one other objective. Having a main objective plus two others that are either random or fixed plus the board that can change within the game. That's a lot of multi tasking that I don't even do for work much less find it enjoyable when doing it for a game.

A really good take! I would also suggest looking into historical wargaming! There are so many historical epochs, interesting conflicts, rule sets, miniature ranges and scales to discover! I started with 10mm Romans and early Germans when GW screwed up their Kill Team releases once too often. 😁
And if you like ancient Romans and Cthulhu mythos then Cthulhu Cohorts is for you ^_^ I mean: we sometime don't even know what a great and amazing things are out there. I do understand though if somebody was IN LOVE in Warhammer and then they starting to destroy it... Been there, feel that, unfortunately :(

I'm surprised that you did not mention any of Warlord games' systems. Bolt Action is awesome & the new Achtung Panzer which purely focuses on tank combat has become very popular.

There is at least a couple of ways to use Gunpla for game playing. There are indie games with rules but no official models like Gamma Wolves and there is a fan made war game rules set specifically for Gunpla called Mobile Suit Skirmish.
Gaslands is really fun if you have some of rhe whackier Hotwheels, because you can paint it to look like scrap slapped together and say "someone thought it was fun"
Yeah, I’m with you guys I set aside my 40K for now to focus on just painting for now. One day I may go back because I’m a lore lover also. But staying mad only hurts yourself.
Very positive video. Can’t help to mention though, even with my kids asking for it, I avoided buying 3-D minis of 40K or paint that wasn’t from Citadel because I felt a loyalty to the company that was providing the hobby and the lore. With GW showing that hateful and exclusionary political ideologies come first and gaslighting the fans. I actually feel quite happy not having to spend thousands each year on my kid’s and my armies. Just bought a 3-D printer and by my estimate I’ve cut our yearly 40k/30k costs to a quarter of what it tended to be. Also the 3-D models look cooler than the mayority of minis GW had been putting out lately.
Lots of good info here thanks! One alternative game I have been introduced to is Xenos rampant- I use the Tyranid half of the leviathan box. They’re quick ish fun games.
@@Ironfrenzy217 Only downsides are 1) It can be frustrating if one of your units fails it activation and its a "turnover" (I play bloodbowl so compare it to that) but its the same for all players (can play more than 2 players), and it teaches you to take your easy moves first, and it means quicker games if short on time. Also 2) i kind of like alternate unit activation rather than you go, I go. Saying all that its still better than 40k IMO
If you like history, you have Parabellum games like Bolt Action for WW2, Tank War and Achtung Panzer ! Also, if you like Star Wars, there’s legion, if you prefer Killteam, you have SW Shatterpoint. Space battles ? XWing. Bigger ships ? Armada. Games for everyone for Star Wars fans !
It's hard not to recommend the games published by Warlord Games as a viable alternative. Much of the old GW talent is now working out of their offices these days, and they hit on a variety of niches worth looking into. I can also recommend Firelock Games' Blood & Plunder and Great Escape Games' Dead Man's Hand if pirates or Westerns respectively are more your thing.

If it makes any more sense, in spite of predominantly focusing on historical content (i.e. Bolt Action, Black Seas, SPQR, etc), Warlord Games in particular collaborates a fair amount with Osprey Games and North Star Military Figures, hence why they also sell Oathmark, Frostgrave, and Stargrave content among others. Warlord Games also holds the licence for a Judge Dredd tabletop game (Strontium Dog), and for a while they were even supporting a Doctor Who tabletop game. As is the case for historical tabletop content in general, a lot of their stuff is great from a lore and diorama perspective (because, you know... historical content) but not always so much when it comes to conversion opportunities (even with the likes of Konflikt '47's wacky WW2 alt-historical setting). Incidentally, this holds true for Blood & Plunder and Dead Man's Hand as well (admittedly, DMH also just came out of pre-order last month, so no hard feelings there).

We are Australian but Sunny is a Singapore native but has really embraced Australia with all her heart. And thank you for the compliment, the reason we said "you'll be on the other side one day" and things can be nuanced. For example I hate the Primarius lore with a passion but I love the models. What I wish they did was just say we are true scaling the marines. We just want people to hobby and enjoy it, plus I am not going to lie if we get more people playing Frost and Star Grave I am going to count that as a win ha ha - Cal
Actually board and PC gamer here! To be precise: Heroes of Might and Magic III had part I and II on PC. But 3 is the most cherished. They reached with that part sweet spots in sooo many aspects... So that is probably the reason why board game was made specificaly starting from that part ;) I wouldn't be surprised if then remade version of it occured as HoM&M3 2.0 😆 😂
Oh yeah we were specifically talking about the board game there is no heroes one or two for the board game only three... I actually own it the big edition, because my brother and I played the stuffing out of heroes 3. I've been "boycotting" GW for several years now, I just didn't call it boycotting. I just stopped buying their stuff and buying from other companies. I haven't looked back at all. My Hobby, my way.
I found the title be a bit clickbait but I think you're on the point that people shouldn't just throw a tantrum saying they're never going to play Warhammer again when in reality they should be buying more consumer friendly products and supporting systems that aren't just space marine land. For me I enjoy playing a game called A Song of Ice and Fire the miniatures game which is a rank and flank that I feel like more people should get into as it has a competitive vent/painting/lore appeal. You can pretty much get started playing for under $200

Balance, reason, understanding, *empathy?!?!* What's this!? No, no, no.... Polarise the viewers and dehumanise one half, that's how you're supposed to do it!! I only just recently got around to painting the gretchin from the 2nd Edition 40K starter set, which I got for Christmas in 1994!!! I think cutting your nose off to spite your face because of certain developments isn't good or healthy, it certainly isn't fair to yourself even if it may be that you've been forced into that position in the first place but it is a tricky thing to navigate. A holiday from the Warhammer hobby and a vist to another one does sound like a good idea. I'm not much into playing games any more but I do have minis from other companies to get stuck into - although I've some of them so long those companies now no-longer exist, Relics by Tor Gaming being the one that comes to mind instantly.
I want to frame this comment, I was honestly think of putting this up (at least the top part) of why we love our fans. We really want people to keep hobby... just like we want to make great videos, we put all out heart into all of them and it really hurts when they aren't successful. But comments like these make it worth wile because I think we are actually making a difference when I read something like this. I do hope you talk about Kings of War at a later date. Being model agnostic as well, I love being able to look at so many different minis to use and paint. I jumped from GW to mantic and have never been happier. It's great not fitting extorted or having my units/army completely removed from the game and Mantic staff are great and answer emails quickly without blocking you for disagreeing with them. GW is basically the opposite. Yes I hold resentment, GW does very little to earn our respect and treats its customers like rubbish, but that being said, I'm happy with my mantic Games and am once again enjoying my hobby without worrying about an army or my money disappearing.
I hope we earnt your respect with our approach. I would agree with a lot of what you say but I don't want live my life with resentment, I know why you feel it and I am not saying I don't have it in my life. I just don't want to live, life that way - Cal

I'm basically in the "here to paint models" group, but I just picked up The Doomed, which has been getting a lot of good word of mouth from what I've seen. Looks pretty good so far and has a solo play mode.

Basically it's a predetermined order of operations (about three or four sentences laid out in the book that prioritize actions) for units that aren't "yours". ULC Battle Reports on YT has some videos from last September that show off the process. looks pretty straightforward
My 'boycott' has been going on since I got a 3d print and went with mini agnostic games. Now my marines fight along side squats in the 41st millennium in OPR, Warsurge and Xenos Rampant. All fun and the lore in my table stay frozen in place in some vague time between 96' and 04' 😂
I just purchased hero quest avalon edition 1 expansion. To take a step back from Sci fi. But has anyone re- released space crusade and it's expansions. I would love to get back to that. Ps I am angry but most of my favourite you tubers are on the woke scale. I don't want to unsub from them but it's the gaslight that has me angry not female custodes I still have a major disrespect from the lore change which is un necessary as the sisters of silence and sisters of battle need expanding yet amazon have basically caused gw to do the unthinkable. I'm now yorn. Do I continue to support gw who created so many of my memories or shun amazon who I spend over £200 a month in spare change with. All I know is I need to re evaluate what I'm doing. I have a backlog I need to build and paint. Which I'm going to do. Then I need to decide if this is eneough for me to leave the hobby or do I sell everything and concentrate on other things in life.

Thank you for promoting other miniature games (frankly they could use a boost regardless, healthy competition is good for everyone.)and I do agree with you for the most part, however I do think a lot of said recent controversy is about GW letting women be space paladins and being driven by not so well intentioned people. People who don't nessisarly care about the hobby so much as stirring up pointless drama. Glad to see a level headed approach from you guys, Its reasureing to know that calmer heads are out there. I'm quite new to the hobby, and finding calm and welcoming channels can be a challenge amongst nerdy hobbies. PS, thank you for your thoughts on Kingdom Death, It's been in my peripheral radar for a while, and its cool to see its actually quite deep and customizable. I'll have to check it out once I'm done with my current project.
I've become a big advocated of 3d printing. It's not nearly as accessible as it needs to be for your average consumer to pick it up, but give it a 5-10 years and it probably will be. Personally, I've taken my hobby bucks and started investing in making my own game. I'll hammer out my own lore for it, pay some artists for arts and models, and distribute the rules and some pdf print-outs for free. Interestingly enough, I play to copy some of GW's old business model - get people to play with proxies or the cut-outs, and if they like it enough, they can choose to invest in the models.

Great video and I like the fact you went for a solution and not a rant. I know it's a bit late but I would like to contribute to the solution. Star wars legion ticks 6 out of 7 catagories and that 7th can be kind of gotten around. Their models are amazing quality, especially their hard plastic kits, some of their earlier stuff is a little weaker but definitely still look good. It's great for casual and competitive and I enjoy playing both aspects. It's great for painters and I've seen lots of different designs and themes created on models. It has awesome lore because well... it's star wars. Great for collectors and can make amazing dioramas. The only one it doesn't really get is converters however there is a massive 3d printing community out there, one big enough to rival 40k's, and has loads of models you can't get officially.
So the only reason I didn't include Star Wars is I had heard mixed things about it and didn't play it myself. Some people said the prices are great and the others said it was horrible maybe their was a price change but I was like I don't know so I will leave that one but I have heard Shatter point is great Long story short, lots of mixed information otherwise would have included - Cal
@WhatareyouPaintingnow That's perfectly fair, I was adding my 2 pennies based on my experience. It has similar pricings to warhammer although the army sizes are roughly half that of warhammer standard games.

Much like any other retcon in the interests of DEI, this one isn’t worth discussing. Your approach of alternatives is the best way. I’d like to submit Dropzone Commander as an alternative for all 7 hobby aspects. It can be played both casually and more competitively, scenario & ongoing story campaigns or standalone missions. The miniatures are really high detailed plastic core units with resin specialist units which are a joy to paint. They have large centrepiece units Because of its smaller scale it is great for diorama builders as it allows a battle scene to be represented and not just a duel or small skirmish. There is a whole faction which is basically the remnants of civilisation which are a scratchbuilder or converters dream although conversions for other factions are possible even if less common. For example I converted my UCM Ferrum look like the helicarrier from Avengers. For lore junkies there is a full ongoing and developing background setting and really intriguing mysteries underpinning the whole story which . Finally collectors have 5 factions of amazing miniatures to choose from each with many unit options

Well, in my case im gonna rather stick to 3d printed chaos space marines that are mix of oldhammer miniatures in truescale to look proper on tabletop obliterating loyalists primaris scum and to fitting lore of Company of Misery- chaos renegade warband from old codexes
Kingdom death looked beautiful but good god they compete with gw for price tag. 40k hooked me in with the lore, 90% of it. But yeah I had to step back from 40k because gw is gonna gw. My scifi itch has been unscratched though

I am glad you discussed the idea of just swapping games/hobby. However I also argue that people should go to 3D printing, especially after the controvery with femstodes and recently PRICE RAISING!!!. Get 40k but not from GW. Show them that we aren't gonna just let them do this BS to us constantly. Politically or Financially.

I hear this all the time about Tau = Gundam but I don’t think it’s all that close. The aesthetic is completely different, the scale is completely different (the average Gundam is supposed to be 18m tall - taller than a Knight, with larger ones the size of a small Titan), there are generally no personal suits (that’s more like Bubblegum Crisis or Elementals in BattleTech), most mobile suits are decent in hand-to-hand (the original classification of the Gundam is a close combat hand-to-hand mobile suit), and nothing transforms in Tau. Further, no Gundam series has had aliens in it, except for a fossil whale-like skeleton in Gundam SEED as evidence of extraterrestrial life (Edit: forgot the isekai other planet from Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise, but I don’t think that series is meant to be in any sort of true Gundam canon like the other timelines.) Yes, Tau is definitely anime inspired, but not really Gundam inspired to me. Fundamentally, the designs come from very different styles, and other than the fact that they’re both mostly two-legged humanoid machines, I don’t think they have a lot in common.
@@Akiosama1009 you can look at the rx79g ez8 and say it doesn’t resemble a tau battlesuit with a different color scheme? Seems like you’re looking only at the space types and completely overlooking ground types. Thunderbolt looks even more like a tau battlesuit. Full armor thunderbolt even more so.
I don’t see the resemblance? The examples you gave - the original 08th MS team designs had a very heavy grunt infantry feel to them, with backpacks, no real jets, and large, more real-world inspired weapons. I’m a huge fan of the 08th designs, but while they’re blockier than many of the other MS designs, they’re also a closer analogue to what a soldier would look like in that environment, and I just think that they’re styled very different, which is why I don’t see the resemblance to the Tau suits. (Actually building an Ez8 right now, in fact, and I think the overall silhouette is completely different.) It’s not to say that GW didn’t get inspired by Gundam at all. I just think that there are probably closer comparisons out there to Tau than Gundam.
@@Akiosama1009 do you just go around to other ppls comments to tell them they’re wrong and say other things are a better answer without giving those better options much or am I just special? I’m very happy that you’re building something but you said yourself that you’ve heard many places that tau and gundam have a similar feel but you just don’t see it. Might it be you that’s the problem?
@@williamaycock579 Could be. It’s more of just a personal observation. I actually suspect the Gundam comparison comes from the fact that it and Evangelion are the two major mainstream mecha shows people outside anime circles generally know and Tau definitely doesn’t resemble Evangelion at all. (The fact I’m building an Ez8 at the moment is merely coincidental timing to this thread.) As for better options…. Hmm. I do think that Farsight is making me want to paint him like a Super Valkyrie from Macross due to the head shape and the thruster pack. The Tau stealth suits and Fire Warrior armor make me think of Elementals in BattleTech, as I mentioned previously. I think the Broadside has a somewhat Gundam feel as it’s actually holding the railgun like a rifle. And while the look isn’t really the same, I think regular Crisis suits are kinda like the Queadluun Rau Meltran Power Armor from the original Macross with shoulder missile pods, arm mounted weapons and not-really-hand manipulators. Not an exact match but getting closer to a similar design. I’m just not coming by up with a design that has spindly legs like the Crisis suits have. I’m also not too sure on the other major suits (Riptide and Stormsurge) as I don’t know too many mecha that don’t have arms like that. Maybe the Tomahawk and Phalanx Destroids from Macross? They don’t have real arms and have weapons there instead.
I love this video. While it tells you not to boicot, it gives a lot of options to put your money instead... and boicot GW... so, I will drop my advice here, Raging heroes does amazing miniatures, and they all are females for armies that GW didn´t give a f***k for years...
I started this video thinking you were going to talk about some controversy. But instead it was a video about alternatives to GW. You talk about hostile design from GW, well this seems like a case of hostile to me…
I’m new to warhammer and I’m really just into painting my knowledge on the lore is lackluster compared to others that being said if they wanted to do it for some time and were just holding of or whatever that’s fine it’s cool the change itself isn’t a problem but if it was brought upon from the likes of amazon strong arming for a progressive change then it is kind of a problem we’ve seen this over and over the last 5-10 years alone and it hasn’t gone well at all like I said I’m new but it would’ve been cool for more of the sisters of silence or battle or something I’m more inclined to say sisters of silence because I’m all about the custodes anyways they are all I’m painting rn
This video was great until the last section.... OPR, conquest, battletech, turnip, etc... all brilliant and should be recommended! Same can be said for old editions and for old GW games like BFG, Inquisitor, Mordheim. Edit: I've seen all of your replies below so don't worry about copypasting under this one... but I do feel that all of these wargames scratch every GW itch plus more without some of the toxicity of GW. They're all making strong moves at my LGS (also in Aus)
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow Why exactly do you think they should try things other than those? I've had so much more fun in the hobby with the alternative wargames. I know you guys would love turnip28 for example.
@@IamtheWV17 Because they are replacements, so essentially no matter what they will be compared back to Warhammer. So, trying something different like going from Warhammer to Gaslands or Kingdom Death there would be comparisons at some point because it's a natural process. However, for those the comparisons would quickly fade because its a completely different thing. Except, if you move on to one of those games which are essentially replacements, it will lead to 'rumination' I mean in is psychological definition: Rumination is the focused attention on the symptoms of one's mental distress, and on its possible causes and consequences, as opposed to its solutions. Our goal is to end that loop of rumination. Notice that we didn't once actually say what is going on right now. Not just because we want it to be evergreen but also because it doesn't help. We think there are good games in there. I am not sure 40k can be a 'good game' I think it can be a fun past time but game by its very nature the set up time and so on takes so long (this is how you can tell I have actually played) but the alternating activation system of One Page Rules changes a LOT of that. However, let's say you do go there, the minute you start think that, the comparison kicks in and then the rumination begins. It's natural, its the most natural thing in the world. You want to know the best cure to rumination? Time, separation from that rumination. This isn't just about Wargaming this about everything. We want people to stay in love with the hobby, for us we think this is legitimately the best way of doing that. It might sound like two people just straddling the fence but as you can see with the point I made there there is dense psychological reasoning behind it. We don't think we are above anyone or anything like that but we believe in transparency and I hope this explanation shows why we didn't recommend that - Cal

I don't get stuck ruminating on warhammer, If anything, I get stuck thinking about the new games. Turnip28 is captivating and unique. Conquest has fantastic lore and a world to get invested in. OPR is just a really fun game! I've quit ruminating by moving on, like a healthy break up.

GW didnt troll anyone, they gaslighted and saw mayor loses. My daughter has wanted more Sisters of Silence for years, instead now we both know that an ideology from our real-world political climate is ruining the escapism we got from the lore while pushing values that hate anyone who disagrees with them
