Three top boys keeping it real and telling it like it is. Damn shame the bike industry has transformed into the cluster fuck it now is. Cheers gents for taking the time to do this and I hope this upload gets the views it deserves. Peace🙏 and best regards, Andy.
PT is right about those disc braking forces, I have a bike with a 180mm front rotor and either I would have to over tighten the carbon steerer expander plug ( which I didnt want to do) to keep it from coming out when trying to preload the headset, or re-load the headset after/before every ride because the headset would come loose from not beeing able to properly preload it because of the expander plug coming loose. I called the shop where I bought it from and explained and asked if it would be a good idea for me to rough up the inside of the steerer to keep the plug from coming out, they told me to come in and they would give me some carbon paste first to try. That uneven force applied to one side of the fork really does knock them conical bearings loose
The entire bike industry is like a massive Hublot pool and in it, you have the likes of Time, maybe Look, which are like Rolex and APs. Winspace is like Casio, god-tier.
Hambini's hit the nail on the head = Q&C. I had a chat with Condor Cycles about a frame that was a bad one and said to Greg Needham the shop manager, what you could do with is a bike jig to check all frames that comes into Condor Cycles and then put anything out of line/dodgy to one side to be returned/credit note. He turned around and said, We did have one and we sold it a couple of years ago....
I’m glad PT has the 100% correct take on electric cars. So maddening to see them add incentives for people to buy them, special parking spaces, but not just build some railway and tram lines, tax cars and parking spaces higher and force people out of cars altogether.
As an old fart myself I would love to see a YT video with an overhead projector and the highlight for me would be spitting on the sheet and rubbing out a mistake like my engineering lecturers used to do 🤣
I suspect the thumbnail is top gear👍🤣. Have to watch it later as i too have to make a shilling video for the bike industry. They must cringe everytime we upload. Good work to you all guys. Will have the good humour to enjoy later. 👍
This "show" doesn't take itself too seriously and we don't claim we know everything, but I think it's healthy to put some taboo subjects out in the open and make people think more critically.
The COVID shortage and massive demand completely f#cked the industry. I completely agree with PT that if a BB or headset is out of spec it shouldn't be build. But try to explain to a customer who ordered their bike in late 2020 that their bike with already out of date di2 will be delayed another 4 months because they need another frame. You can also see that sometimes the assembly and painting in Europe is getting sloppy. Paint overspray is common, derailleurs aren't indexed and brakes rub. Let's hope that I will get better Ps: Got to build a time last week and it's beautiful!
I used to smash watts with my rollers and my Garmin without any GUI. I would just follow the intervals my coach gave me and I got super fit. I did eventually get on Zwift 5 years after everyone else and I do admit the immersion experience is pretty cool.
Worked at a trek store for 4 years during the last madone period processing a lot of warranties- can't recall ever doing one for madone isospeed. Could be because there's not that many of them or they get babied but maybe they're even more frigid than you think
The biggest problem with "Made in China" is that the customs office wants to charge you extra 50% if you dont do it correctly. I really would go for a chinese bike or a ribble with custom paint but adding 30-50% on top of the original price...aint got no money for this, thanks EU and brexit for it
One reason why China can make stuff cheap is not only of its massive skilled labor force, but China right now has the most efficient infrastructure in the world. Their logistic and supply chain AI is head and sholder above everyone else.
Having a single-party government means you can invest in 8-10 year projects without any opposition. Obviously... there are also huge disadvantages.....
The made in still holds negative connotations for example those British expressions of engineering excellence that werw the Austin Allegro or the Reliant Robin.
About the EVs, I wouldn't object but I believe our dear PT is missing out on one of the more important factors, the external costs put on society for the pollution ECE vehicles put out. Pollution, especially the NOx from diesel combustion is really nasty stuff and shorten life spans all over the world. Increased risk of astma, lung cancer and so on is a major issue in cities, mainly driven by those fumes but of course also particles from tires etc. So apart from the moral health perspective, it also costs society a lot of money in healthcare. Cities would save billions getting people on bikes just from that, which is why an investment in 1km cycle lane is actually an indirect saving/ income for a city for the health benefit it enables. So yeah, I'm obviously pro-cycling all the way, but you can't argue with the severity of pollution mate. I might add that cargo bikes are fantastic modern SUVs for city-folk.
Why did PT cite Polestar? They are effectively a boutique, low volume mfg. compared to the big fish. Seems like cherrypicked info. It would be like Pinarello saying their bikes are only ridden 5000 miles in their lifetime. While that may be true, they’re small in the bike market. If Giant said something like that, then it’d be more valid data for bikes as a whole. Edited for clarity, and added the example.
Part of this show is an exercise in showing that you can basically "prove" anything is cool or uncool. We three are skeptics and our viewers are probably skeptics too. Stay skeptic.
It's still going strong. My G2 replaced it as my "proper" gravel bike. Now the Waltly is kind of an endurance road bike...but I don't do endurance rides, haha.
Any thoughts on gravel frame from winspace? Whats the maximum spacers you can put on it? What BB needs to have? Im thinking of getting one as an all around bike. Thanks.
The "Made in XXX" is something I'd like to comment on. I live in the US. I work in a field where I visit lots of manufacturing companies. I know that a lot of this labor is usually Temp Hires or Union Workers. The Temps are unskilled cheap labor. The Union workers are the laziest bunch of fuckers I've ever seen and honestly I don't get how those companies survive. So the Made in the USA sticker on a product tells me that one, it's over-priced because well someone has to pay for that labor, and two, it's quality may or may not be any good but at least I should be able to get a refund if I'm not happy with it.
I think it's a useful piece of information to have on a product, the problem is that the general public probably has the wrong idea and manufacturers take advantage of this and thus use it as a marketing tool.
Only made in USA stuffs I buy is military rucks. I'm not fond of Union workers myself even though the industry I'm in has own Union. You're right. They're lazy and entitled. I don't like their attitude of "it's not my job" when more things could done to improve product or service as long it's their capability.
I think PT tried to address the elephant in the room regarding Durianrider. I'm not the woke police here, far from it, but surprised his persona is considered to be cool. Apart from that, good show!
Certain items, such as clothing, you might prefer it’s made in the UK rather than in a sweatshop in Bangladesh or whatever, who are forcing 12 year old kids to work 18 hour days so you can get a t-shirt for £4
I do agree product quality has very little connection with manufacturing origin, however, that is not the same as saying the origin doesn't matter. H&S, social, and environmental laws aren't nearly as strict as in the UK or other EU countries, for a start, not to mention the shipping carbon footprint. I do appreciate many consumers do not give a s#!t about this, as long as they pay less, but it does matter to some I'm afraid. Btw, I am talking about actual manufacturing, not finishing touches just for the sake of the sticker... Also, I do believe buying is also voting for a business model over another. I don't agree with certain social/environmental standards so I will try to put my money elsewhere if possible (easier with some products than others). Moving to cheaper labour/low regulation areas, only to keep the prices exactly the same is disgraceful, and just because the issues are out of sight, does not make them disappear. The blue river around the denim district in China is a good example. I live in a EU country with lots of manufacturing, traditionally for established brands from the UK, Italy, France, especially on clothing. Some moved their operations to Eastern Europe or Asia, leaving hundreds unemployed here, but you would see the same exact price at the shops. That is something I cannot agree with... I have no issues with buying chinese brands made in China as such, however, I will always prefer a product made closer and where social/enviromental regulations are better. I am basically saying to that company their business model is working. Also, I would not like myself or others I know, to work long hours for low pay, or even get ill whilst working, so why should I support that with my income?... An yes, I do own products (mostly electronics) made under such conditions, but unfortunately there is still no alternative...
Boutique mechanics and shops are totally uncool. Where I live, when i come into the shop and see the Mechanic's hands are clean, and they got complete park tool set hanging on the walls, then your bike's gonna be completely fckd. Lol.
PT is right about EVs. We need to see past the gimmick. Making new cars is worse for the environment than keeping existing cars running. Plugging a car in to charge it just creates emissions at the power plant.
The 5-years-old has a well earned reputation but no idea about the high quality of swiss boat building. Just check the history of the Alinghi Sailing Team that won the Americas Cup as first european nation. Alinghi beat the ETNZ down in Auckland and defend the Cup in 2007 in Valencia with swiss build race yachts.
All that nonsense stalking an old girlfriend & trying to sue her online in real-time a bit of a black mark from me for Durianrider. I do love most of his content & his no-compromise stance.
I have followed him for years, leanne did try to screw him over and just left the dog figsy. Maybe it shouldn't be put on line, but they are just as bad as each other in this respect.
I always have an inner conflict in terms of should you love the art or the artist? I also don't like the whole internet witch-hunt culture BUT obviously if any of it is true it's also terrible.
Ask yourself why I'd 'stalk' someone I traded in a life of hotter younger women and freedom life for boss. Now you have the truth. I went to her place in the hopes of getting some of the money back she stole from me. What would you do? Can you relate? I didn't think so 😆❤️
Durianrider is the ultimate troll, it goes over most peoples heads. Durianrider has pushed the same thing for over a decade. Love him or hate him he sticks to his guns.
It is amazing these days how many things you can justify under the umbrella of the term "troll". Also, far right is sticking to its guns for almost a century. Does this mean we should give them credit and bonus points?
@@waynosfotos I know what you meant. My problem was with the generalisation. P.S. My response wasn't directed to you but to every person that will read your comment. You are a likeable person in youtube/cycling community and people will give more attention to your opinion.
Wayno- apparently, down there, "troll" is also upside-down. Up here, trolls are people who say things they don't believe simply to get a rise out of the crowd. I think Durianrider says what he believes. Do you think that you as a normal person get's enough advantages out of losing 2 lbs to pay 100% more for a bike? I am 78 and am closing in on 4,000 miles and 100,000 feet of climbing. And on a standard Italian steel frameset that weighs 2 lbs more than my Trek Emonda and 4 lbs more than my Look KG585 without the fear of massive failures that all carbon fiber could have. I am permanently disabled from carbon fiber failure, and believe me, you don't want to take the pills I have to take to prevent seizures and memory loss.
Is PT middle aged? Looks about 17 with the new do. Most frames I've built up have headset play and I've got around it by using epoxy to get around it. It's not acceptable but looks like we're stuck with it. I agree with PT on the issue that will come with QC under covid.
treks iso crap is junk, no one needs a floppy seat post thats designed to break which also comes with a lifetime warranty... fuggn geniuses over there at trek. im glad they got rid of it.
MY PROBLEM WITH made in china is the lies we re told by bike manufacturers WE PRODUCE THE BEST STUFF and here they re made cheap sold expensive to us RIPPING US OFF and now some of the china brands are doing the same !! FFS make good for fair price !!
Regarding the Nerdthletes, I think you might be over simplifying the problem. In other Olympic sports as PT says, it is mostly about the human and when technology does intervene the governing bodies step in to regulate it in some way such as skin suits in swimming or carbon plated running shoes. Unfortunately there is an inherent problem with that in cycling, you can put every athlete on the same bike but the size of the athlete will still play an overwhelmingly dominant factor due to aero drag. If you want to test the human, put them on a smart trainer and do the hour record for power to normalize for the bike and aero problems. Since that is going to be boring as shit, you might as well accept that the hour record (as an example) is a distance record, it can/is hugely impacted by aero and just let people duke it out. With the exception of Dan Bigham, who I understand is basically a perfect human specimen from an aerodynamics stand point - moving forward anyone that is going to take on the hour record is going to be backed by big teams with money and access to wind tunnels, in which case the field is levelled so let them duke it out.
So Zwift have followed the Uber model of destroying competition and now its uncool? Wahoo and Garmin could consider reducing the prices of their equipment.
Are ev car cool. No, cars are not cool. Building more roads and parking in cities are just dumb. Public transit and building a livable community, cool.
More of the same boys, the format is good but you need to make it a bit shorter. The mix of personalities and one liners are out of this world. Burlesconi's parties!
Zwift did a good thing with shaking up the hardware trainer industry. I view this much like the Chinese made and branded frames, wheels and other parts which are by in large great kit and compared to the big brands very well priced.
Peak Torque's analysis of EVs is absolutely spot-on. Genius, i agree with every word. PT needs to somehow get on mainstream media with this, and get some f**cking common sense and reality to the world right now before it's too late!
I'm shocked how misinformed PT is on the CO2 footprint of EV's during their lifetime. Especially the remark on batteries ending up on landfills, that's just very untrue, batteries are near to 100% recycleble.
I am quoting from published white papers grom the industry - not making it up. When the trend is to finance a car for 30k km and swap it for a new one, and the CO2 cost of an EV is much higher, it is not green.
Total agreement on EVs. But stop pretending that the electrical power comes from a "green" source when the fact is that less than 15% at best is. The conversation from fossil fuel to electric energy is a sum loss. But the fact is that CO2 has zero effect on the climate. If you want to discuss that, I would be happy to explain spectroscopy to you.
