The teacher's accent is so soothing and accurate , the confidence and clarity in his voice are the best things to listen to,my respect for you mister .
I can't express my appreciation to you, Mr. Ashworth, in words alone. You literally saved me many times, and you had me become obsessed with Linguistics in general, and Pragmatics in particular.
This channel has been so helpful to me this semester. I wish I had discovered you earlier. You make this content so easy to consume. Sitting my last last paper in Semantics and Pragmatics tomorrow. This just helped me answer a question on invoking implicatures and implicature utilization in maxim clash. Thank you Mr.Ashworth❤
Hi Mr. Ashworth. I just want to say thank you so much because your videos literally SAVED my life! I love to watch your videos especially during my examination week ( actually my exam is tomorrow😂) , because it's so soothing and easy to understand. I really hope that you will keep posting more videos and discuss about more topics in the future! Once again, thanks Mr. Ashworth and have great day. Greetings from Malaysia 💕 !
Sir, your way of explaining is beautiful and your videos are very useful. I hope you come back soon to make new videos and continue your good job ،Thank you for your efforts.
I do have a couple neurolinguistics-related videos: "Psycholinguistics: Language and the Brain" and "Slips of the Tongue and Slips of the Ear", but I may try to create a dedicated video to neurolinguistics in the future. Thanks for watching!
Hello, Professor Evan, Let me first say that your way of delivering the information is unique and informative. I have a humble request, I am doing a master in English linguistics, so could you be my supervisor?
@Evan Ashworth Multiple thanks, professor. I do understand that you might be a lot busy, and I realise that I am not lucky enough to have you as my advisor. Thank you again.
Hello Man, Thanks for sharing this! By the way, which one of the followings is correct 1. Write the note neatly 2. write the note neat in the first example "neatly" is working as an adverb that how the note should be written. But I was wondering in the second example the adjective "neat" is used as an object complement that to state what the object "the note" has to become. but on the other hand, The second example sounds strange. Please help me with this that will make me so grateful to you.
Hello! Prescriptively, the first example is "correct", but for linguists, the second example is just fine, as both examples mean the same thing. I hope that helps!
Hi Evan, I love your videos! Do you have any textbook recommendation on English grammar/linguistics 101 for learners who do not major in English? Thanks in advance! I hope u have a nice day
Hi Soraya! The introductory linguistics textbooks I might recommend would be The Study of Language by George Yule and Language Files (published by Ohio State University). I hope that helps!
This is a great question, and my feeling is that other figures of speech can but don't always flout a maxim. However, for example, if the speaker piles on too many metaphors, the meaning could be easily lost on the addressee, so that might constitute a flouting (or probably a violation) of the maxim of manner (namely, the speaker is not "clear"). I hope that helps!
@@evanashworth490 What is the best model to follow in order to analyse intonation in terms of phono-pragmatic analysis. Furthermore, how can I design eclectic model concerning these two fields?
@@khuloodahmed2437 Whoa--sorry, that question is a bit outside my area of expertise, but I think you could use the transcription system devised by Jefferson and Schegloff which is used for conversation analysis. I'm not sure about your second question though, sorry.
Thanks a lot, sir. Please keep sharing more, they help a lot! A:What do you think of Evan Ashworth's videos on RU-vid? B: Those videos are the shit, you gotta check them out ASAP. Without violating or flouting any of the maxims, right? :)
This is actually a complicated question to answer. I had to look up what "zaddy" means, but if you mean to call me an attractive, older man (thanks!), then, I guess it's not entirely irrelevant because I just take it as a general compliment about the video. However, if you mean something else by "zaddy" (e.g., the sound a Cadillac makes when idling too low), then, yes, it would be a violation of the maxim of relation.
I have no plans to make a video on generative phonology, but I plan to make one on applied linguistics and, perhaps later on, one on cognitive linguistics.
Sure! Consider the example below in which speaker A is a teacher and speaker B is a 3rd grader: A: Do you have any questions about multiplication tables? B: Does 8 times 8 = 36? A: I cannot divulge the answer but you should eschew obfuscation by consulting your textbook. In the third line, speaker A isn't necessarily speaking too much (violating maxim of quantity), but they are definitely violating the maxim of manner by using unnecessarily complex language with a child, which creates confusion. I hope that helps!
Hello there! I know I'm being late, but can someone here explain to me what it means to observe a maxim (and what is the non-observance of a maxim)? I don't understand that and I feel pretty stupid for that =-=
Hello. You're certainly not stupid! I describe the difference between violating and flouting a maxim in the video, and generally, non-observance of a maxim is either violating or flouting a maxim.
Hi, teacher ...please, I am a Collage student and I am seeking for a recommendation which book that u recommend me to study to overcome problems I am facing with discourse analysis, I am lost with this subject . Indeed thank you 4 all❤.
Hello! I might suggest looking at Discourse Analysis as Theory and Method (1st edition) by Marianne W Jorgensen and Louise Phillips. I hope that helps!
Hello Sir,I want to read this book name A comprehensive grammar of the English language written by Randolp qurik, but I found it difficult to understand, could you suggest me what are the topics in grammar I need to have better concept to understand this book.❤
Hello! Yes, Quirk can be difficult to read, and I think part of this has to do with the way Quirk writes and the time in which he was writing. I found it useful to have a strong grasp on a grammatical terminology (e.g., subordinate clauses, lexical categories).
Hi. When a final syllable is cut off , we call is 'apocope,. When the initial syllable is cut ofd, we call it "'syncope' How to call when the middle syllable is cut off?
That looks like the maxim of manner is being flouted (not a serious violation to me) because the listener must use inference to determine that the speaker doesn't miss Mary.
Briefly, "violating" a maxim means breaking the rule of the maxim, but "flouting" only appears to break the rule of the maxim (by creating an implication that the listener/reader must figure out).
Sure am! Also, from Language Files and A Concise Introduction to Linguistics. Covering content from introductory linguistics texts is one of the main purposes of this channel. Thanks for watching!
