I've heard of the Corries before but have only checked them out properly for the first time today. This early folk-scene stuff is quality and bands like this, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, The Watersons and countless more hold some absolute hidden gems in their repertoire that really should be brought into today's singing scene.
This great song is not a real folk ballad. It was composed by James Hogg, The Etrick Shepherd, who died in 1835. But he’d collected many ballads for Walter Scott for his collection of “minstrelsy” so he was steeped in Scottish folk song and history. The Corries Dona fabulous job.
a wonderful song from the era of the Border Reivers, when the writ of neither the King of England nor that of the King of Scotland ran in that region of Northern England/Lowland Scotland.
An old favourite. This version was recorded by the Corrie Folk Trio. Yep, it wasn’t just Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson but also Bill Smith. Sadly none of the photos in the video show Bill.
Are you absolutely sure about that? This is from a Corries album from the time long after Bill had left and it was just a twosome. And you certainly can't hear Bill's voice.
