The Cosmic Horror of THE ENDLESS (Lovecraftian Reality Warper, Time Domes + Ending) EXPLAINED

Hey guys whats happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’re going to be exploring The Endless, the 2017 supernatural horror, written, directed by and starring Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.
In a genre saturated with overtly explicit horror tropes and a dependence on jump scares, "The Endless" is a compelling, complex, and thoughtful exploration of Lovecraftian cosmic horror that manages to intrigue, unsettle, and mystify, in a film that's just as much about the human condition as it is about otherworldly terrors.
The film follows two brothers, Aaron and Justin, who return to the UFO death cult they escaped from a decade earlier, only to find that the group's bizarre beliefs about an unseen entity might hold more truth than they initially thought. As their differing objectives and motivations clash, we see the pair go through a harrowing experience that pushes them to the limit, with a Lovecraftian monster threatening to upend their world.
In this video, we’re going to explore the story, the weird Lovecraftian monster at the crux of the film, in addition to the ending.

One thing that always made me question the true motivations and limits of the creature is the tug-of-war scene. It seems to enjoy, to some extend, playing with the reidents of its territory, like legitimately playing with them. I feel it has more affectionate views on them, somewhat parental or like a pet owner. That of course doesn't mean that it's incapable of abuse and tyranny - in fact, quite the opposite, some of the worst abuses come at the hands of parents and guardians.

If you watch Resolution the ending shows us that "toying" with humans is literally what it's all about. Everything it does is to encourage humans to entertain it.

Understanding the entity’s motivations is impossible. the act of Tug of war could be something entirely different to us. If I drop my hotdog on the ground does the ant look up n say thank u god. If I step on an anthill and crush several ants am I the devil. Or the reality is we cannot comprehend its motivations or its indifference.

I grew up less than 30 minutes from where they filmed these. I can’t explain the love I have for the land. I grew up camping in it, hiking in it. To me it’s actual heaven. So seeing it as a background for these films was something special I can’t really relate. And if I’d met the beer cultists in my 20s, oooo I’d’ve signed up so fast. I think these movies sent me down a cosmic horror rabbit hole and I’m still here. These men and their movies are treasures. Thank you so much for this video! These guys deserve all the attention.

It should be noted that [spoilers] at the climax of the Ascension, the creature seemingly consumes the other cult members. Carl described it as something truly horrifying, hence his suicide decision. His suicide seems to be what shortened his loop, since that's the point where he restarts each time. I think the changing lengths of the various loops is mostly coincidental. I bet the "base" loop is 10 years, and shortens if a "victim" tries to wrest control from the Entity. Maybe the shortest loops just accidentally took place closer to the Ascension. All of the ones with shortened loops were shown somehow taking their own lives. There were loads of unanswered questions, and I enjoyed how the movie didn't try answering everything. What's the story behind the Red Flower? Why does the oldest loop seemingly only go back 100 years? What keeps the Entity from expanding the Domes to consume entire cities, or even continents? If it has complete control over time and space (such as redirecting someone hiking), how could you escape it? Why does it appear to take the form of crows?

I love stories like this, tales that express a chaos that makes all the sense to the unkown thing that is doing it but being not understandable by us, kimd of how we must seem to lower thinking animals. We only know what we know based on our human experince in a universe of Endless ones. I don't need to understand something in order to get it. This film and the other did it right. Him saying there was a monster in the water; that alone is more spooky than anything else they could've done, aside maybe from them showing a murky, sparkling, confusing look at it from a distance underwater and never explaining or showing it again.

I saw "The Endless" first many years ago, and would follow up with "Resolution" a couple months later (Having taken time to think about the previous film). I still think about both films often.

That's funny. That quote from Lovecraft. I am NOT a Lovecraft fan. I don't think that constant overuse of words like "hideous", "grotesque", "horrifying", and "eldritch" make a story scary in the least. I'm somehow NOT surprised that Lovecraft mistakenly pronounces "fear" as the oldest and most powerful emotion. LOVE is the oldest and most powerful emotion. If fear was, we would never have the guts to approach a stranger who we somehow find attractive, and try to become closer to them, eventually ending up in couples that produce MORE people to love. What's so profound about saying fear is the most powerful emotion, especially from someone who was such an unrepentant racist? Maybe FEAR was HIS most powerful emotion. Not mine.
