@@ilja7708 Who are you talking about? There were Zaporozhian Cossacks, Cossacks of Don and Cossacks of Cuban (heirs of Zaporozhian Cossacks). The Zaporozhian Cossacks were ukranians who rebel against Commonwealth, fought Turkey and defeted Moscowia in Battle of Konotop in 29.06.1659.
@@ilja7708 Even the Don Cossacks did not consider themselves Russian. Let alone the Zaporozhians lol. The Russian brainwashing is strong with this one.
@@ilja7708 Ilja Zaporizhian cossacks had organised themselves when your demonic Ivan Grozny was creating death and destruction in wooden Moscow and did not know where Kyiv was on the map!! There was no Russia then but little backward Moscovia!
The Russian cossacks served the Russian Tsar. The Ukrainian cossacks served their own autonomous interests in the Ukrainian regions where they held control
@@ghstly2000 The Don Cossacks and other cossacks in Moscovia were not the kind of "free" cossacks that were on Ukraine's territory. The cossacks of Moscovia served the Tsar. The term cossack was a name given to a fighting man and the word was derived from the Turkish word for "free man" Later Russia adopted the term for some of its regiments. The original term of cossack in Ukraine was different to the Russian understanding of the term.
Cossacks have never lived or lived on the territory of Russia, but they worked and lived under their flags, but this is all the same as saying that Russia is the 3rd Rome because they have the territory of the Roman Empire
I see many Ukrainians offended by the statement that cossacks were not all part of the ukrainian ethnicity. May I ask what ethnicities were the cossacks of the Don or the ones in the Caucasus? Though I admit that the only centralized state ever built by cossacks was in today's Ukraine and by Ukrainians (when the Tsar's envoys came to the hetman's court they needed translators). Even so, this doesn't mean that cossacks were only Ukrainians. I am not saying this is not an important page of the ukrainian history but to say that the cossacks were a specific ethnic group is just narcissistic.
Ok, you know what I think, I think these petty arguments push our people away even farther. There were Ukrainian Cossacks and Russian Cossacks. I hope one day it’s the Cossacks that bring those to countries together as they are a patriotic symbol of both nations! ⚔️ 🇷🇺 🤝 🇺🇦 ⚔️
Technically it just means free men. What is always forgotten is that most Don Cossacks worked together with their brothers until Peter I and those that came after him killed the best of them. Idea is very simply. You always chose death over slavery. You never try to enslave others. That is what a true cossack is to me. Romanov empire was fairly new in 1618-1664 so it is understandable that everybody from Don to Danube did not understand what kind monster it would become.
@@laaylagi6503 The Scythians were an Iranian nomadic people who spoke an Indo-European language. The indigenous people of the Caucasus, such as the Chechen and Ingush, are unrelated to the Scythians.

Have can u bring incorrect relations to Russia and ignore all cossacks original? They were match more related to Ukraine and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. How can u miss Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny?! Bohdan Khmelnytsky with cossacks created an independent state of Ukraine! Cossack state! Very big dislike for your incompetence.
very true. anyone could join the Zaporozan Kozak . poor and the rich polish lithuanian rus ruthenian , Anyone who loved freedom could join. szlachta was wrong not to accept Kozak rights. My country was wrong . Ukraine should be independent centuries ago. All the best 🇺🇦 from 🇵🇱
You people claim there was no ukraine before the soviet union, while kiev was a city when Moscow was a village. Ukraine might have not been an independent country back then but they WERE Ukrainian. Language, Food, ways of life, everything was different for ukrainians compared to Russians.

There were no "cossacks" in Ukraine. There were Kozaks. The former were russian druncards, finally employed by the monarchy, the latter were true warriors, defending Ukraine from invasions on the South.
Watched barely a minute in and their already not an "Ethnic" groups of people 😑!? It's like saying Yoruba,Sans,Bantu people of various Nation states are not Africans! If these groups decided to join forces they wouldn't have a problem understanding what they had in common. These groups can join forces because they stem from the same race.
Since we're talking about Russian history, the next vids should b on Empress Catherine the Great, to see the reality vs fiction of her portrayals in HBO miniseries and Hulu The Great. There other is Russian myths on sirins. Much like the renowned sirens but with 2 differences, the E in the end is an I and remember when described as bird women well they say the bird parts r of owls.
@See U in History / Mythology I have a 1953 book that lists the tatars, cossacks, khanate, uhlan & murza as all under the main title of 'Tartar.' Thoughts?
Well my great great grandfather was a Cossack Ataman, but he went to the then newly founded Yugoslavia. Least I don't have to worry about the politics across the pond.
Ukraine? At that time ukraine doesent even exist. The ukraine Identity Was created in the 20.century before that the people in that Region called themselves simply russians or Poles or even belarussians

there is no such thing as 'russian cossack', what you call russian cossack from Rostov on Don and Kuban , they are also ukrainian cossacks, as till the beginning of 20th centiry Rostov on Don and Kuban were inhabitat with ukrainians, until beginning of 20th centiry when russians rusified them by force, if you need proofs, see old maps
Too many mistakes, too many facts left behind, Polish-Lituanian comonwealth isn't mentioned at all, i suggest people who want to learn about Cossacs to watch some other videos
Biased video , skipping the whole Commonwealth and Cossack history. Just another one trying to rewrite the history. Unless it’s just a glimpse into the Russia and Cossacks history chapter.
Your video is not horrible but your sources were all Russian influenced, and so have a pro Russia bias. Many of the things you said are how Russians view cossacks. Ukrainians view cossacks very differently. Kings and Generals has a good video that shows the more Ukrainian slanted view. I would love to see a video from you comparing and contrasting the two views.
Totally false about the relationships between Cossacks and Crimean Tatars, a narrative of Kremlin propaganda. There is no single battle of Zaporizhzhia Cossacks (except some against Turks, perhaps), won without Tatars. They always fought together, Cossacks as infantry, Tatars as cavalry.
They were the bravest in the Battle of Bathoem, where they killed 5,000 prisoners by slitting their throats, only because they were Hussars and thus wanted to weaken the elite of the Commonwealth, because they had no chance against them in a fair fight.
The Cossacks are raping and murdering in this village and they break into a house where there's two beautiful girls and their grandmother. . . ."Do anything you like with us," says one of the girls, "but leave our bubbie alone!" ''Wait a minute," says the bubbie, "a pogrom is a pogrom!'
NOT TRUE!!! Again Ukrainian history is adopted as Russian! Zaporozhian Sich has been created on territory of Ukraine. And it still exists as our cultural legacy.
They intend to wipe it out this time for good. Mariupol, Melitopol and others wont be nothing compared to what tsars servants do if they advance further to the west. Zaporozhia, Uman, Vinnitsya and all similar places are symbols of disobiedience to Moscow rulers.

Hello, I am a Cossack myself from the Semerichiye host in Kazakhstan. There are some few mistakes you made in the video and maybe suggestions for the future I would like to clear; 1. The word Cossack = Kazak, Kozak of Kozac means free man in Slavic and Turkic languages. The word you used “Kazakh” is an ethnic group of people in Kazakhstan which shouldn’t be confused with Kazak. 2. You forgot to mention yermak, the first Siberian Cossack who conquered Siberia. 3. Also you forgot to mention many other hosts who played huge roles such as Kuban host, Terek or tersk host, Ural host, transbaikal host, Siberian host, Astrakhan host, Orenburg host, Ussuri host, Semerichiye host and a few more. 4. The haircut you referred to is called a “hohol” a national haircut for Ukrainian Cossacks aka zaporozhian Cossacks. The rest of the hosts did not use this haircut but did grow out their beards. 5. In the civil war, Cossacks fought on both red and white side. 6. You forgot to mention that zaporozhian Cossack were deported to the Black Sea and that’s how the Kuban host formed once they were transferred to the Caucasus. 7. It would’ve been very appreciated to discuss about our traditional clothing such as the cherkeska (also known as the chokha) (this applies to some hosts, not all) and our hats, papakhas, Kubankas and furazhkas (some of these caps were worn specifically by some hosts) 8. You should definitely talk about the Cossack dialects also known as Balachka (for Ukrainians) and don gytor (Russian one) Thank you for reading this. I still enjoyed your video, but i just needed to clear some of your mistakes and things that were very important to say, but were missing.
Well said, I did also miss the fact about our elective system (rada). For exampel the atamans and the diferents resolutions that where pased. But great to see peopel hava an interesst in our culture. Greatings from the Don Host.
2:32 is actually the Serbian people's army fighting Turks in one of the battles during the First Serbian Uprising in 1804. The guy in black, on the horse, is Karadjordje (Black Georgie) Petrovic, the leader of the uprising. Anyway, this is an amazing video.
Did not even mention the Khemlnytsky Uprising! That was a pivotal event for the Zaporozhian Cossacks. And they were more associated with the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth since they literally lived on thier land.
And another historical fact about khemlnsky that you don't mention is, that he and his men murdered and butchered 100s of thousands of jews! Just for being jewish!
0:30 Jasper Pääkkönen from Vikings? LoL! But yeah Cossacks and Hakkapelitas rlz! XD I have to say that you forget totally the Finland bc Hakkapelitta has joined mighty Slavs!!!
This historical overview is a little sloppy. The Cossacks are one of the tricky topics in the history of eastern Europe. Their language, ethnicity and legacy are very disputed. It's not clear at all that the present day people claiming Cossack identity are truly directly descended.
So you basically erased Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth from cossack history and pretend this to be documentary? Thats probably the most dostorted historical events I have ever seen on the internet.
Both of these words share the same origin, it comes from the Proto-Turkic word Qaz(Khaz) and it means “to live free” and “to wander”. The “stan” part comes from the Persian language and means “land” or “country”, that’s why many countries today that historically have had relationship with Persian people bear the suffix “stan”, (Afghanistan, Qazaqstan, Turkmenistan, etc.) Overall, the word “Qazaqstan” means “the land of the free”/“the land of the wanderers”. As for the Cossacks, since many of them were of Turkic descent, they are called by the name “Qazaq”, which fits their way of life perfectly.
