Are you currently teaching? If so, what grade level/subject? I would love to hear if your experiences differ! If you haven't already, hit subscribe + turn on the bell notification. I have an entire playlist of just teaching-related videos if that interests you!
Great video! I taught for the Archdiocese of NYC for 5 years. I have my B.A. / M.A degree. I will be licensed by or before 2021. I love teaching kid. I agree with you. Life in NYC is expensive.
Hi I’m a German and Economics teacher from Ireland with a masters degree. I would love to move to NYC. Do you know if these subjects would be in demand to make this move possible ?
Thank you so much for this video, Nina! I'm still in school and I want to be a teacher in NYC, so your transparency and facts were so helpful! Love this!
It depends on where you are in Manhattan or an outer borough and what year of teaching you are in! Starting salary w/ masters in the DOE is now $68,252. In theory, you could allocate $1,500 a month and a find an apartment for that price. I think that would be a large amount to pay each month but it should be a little less than each paycheck your bimonthly paycheck, but that also depends on how much you are putting into retirement each month.
Thanks for the transparency. Life is coming at me fast and I like to see how other people manage teaching in NYC Metro. Not in it for the money but NYC aint cheap hehe.
NYC educator here!! I feel the same way...I want to purchase a home. However, I would live from paycheck to paycheck if I purchased a home...something I don't want to do. YES!! Get your +30 when you can.
Came across your channel bc RU-vid recommended it to me. I’m a NYC public high school teacher for 10 years and I agree with what you said in the video! Definitely a balance with cost of living and the salary. Had to make lots of sacrifices in my early years! I finally got the hang of balancing my student loans, rent, traveling 3x a year (my vice), retirement, and cost of living!!! It’s a challenge.
Glad I’m not alone in feeling like it’s a bit of a challenge. And good for you for committing to travel 3x a year. I hope to one day get to that point!
Nina Thomas it’s definitely possible! I travel during mid-winter break, spring break and summer. As long as you’re not averse to flying economy you can find great deals during those times. So far I’ve never spent more than $400 round trip to Europe or $600 round trip to Asia. I use “secretflying” or “Scott’s cheap flights” to let me know when deals are around. Lots of teachers use them to get away!
Also, to help with getting your masters + 30 look into CLEP exams. For about $90 you can take exams that will give anywhere between 3-6 (or even more) credits! And you don’t have to score high. You can just barely get a passing score on them and the NYC doe will accept them.
I just found your channel! I work in nyc as well. I work at a charter school though, so it’s a little different. I found this to be very informative. New subscriber here ❤️
Hey, Ms. Thomas, I teach in the Bronx with 25 years experience. One of the few benefits of getting older is knowing I'm on the back end. I could retire today if I wanted to. COVID-style remote teaching is a bummer. I want to be back in the classroom with the kids, the old fashioned way. I miss live students so bad. My only regret is putting too little in my TDA. Load that sucker up with whatever you can possibly afford!
Hello! Really glad to have encountered your channel. I want to work at Google as a software engineer. But I always have had an interest in Maths because I am good in the subject and also my peers have always complimented me on being a really good teacher as I can explain them everything. So I feel that apart from doing Computer Engineering, I could perhaps teach maths to high school students just because I want to be in touch with the subject. Your video really helped me. You were really transparent about your financial life and I really respect you for that. Have a nice day ahead!
Hi, Nina, for the plus 30 for the NYC salary differential, can you take courses with ASPDD or A+ while you are still getting your master's? or do you need to have your New York teacher license to take courses with ASPDD or so...Also, do you have any recommendations on where the "plus 30 courses" can be completed? Thank you so much
Currently a PreK Autism Spectrum Teacher in Florida! We are paid relatively low considering our cost of living. However, happy to come across your videos, as I am moving to NYC in October! =)
Thank you so much for talking about this!! I'm from the Bronx, and I'm about to study Behavioral Science in college (dual major with special education) :-)

Can anyone help me? I am an Indian and I wanna apply for the position of a high school teacher in NYC. Graduate from Bachelor of business administration and into teaching high school kids since 7 years now I am also currently teaching 15 students from different states of NY And have gained a good 2 year experience So any idea?
You should go to TEACH.com and input the license you want and whatever education and experience you have. They'll tell you want classes and whatever else you need to do.
Good luck!! I just subscribed to support you!! I am thinking about moving to start teaching in nyc. I already have a couple of graduate degrees. Not sure if I can afford it on a teacher salary. I am single and have about 10k total in debt from school and cards etc. so I am thinking about it. I have visited nyc a few times for holidays and have like it, lots of things I like doing there. It’s mostly the winters that feel me with a bit of dread and the cost of rent. I don’t know how you survive the winters! In terms of rent I’d like to do a small studio if I can, or perhaps rent with roommates? A studio would be great if I can!! So I am trying to think through it. I gather with some graduate degrees I’d start at about 68k now? Not sure if the extra grad school would earn me more. Let me know what you think if you’re able to. I am from out of state, currently in the Midwest. And I agree I wouldn’t spend too much on a wedding!! You really gonna have to burst that bubble for your parents if you can!! There’s better ways to spend that cash!! But I do get the traditions and pressures of parents and family from other parts of the world as an immigrant myself. I’d rather use the money to travel for a year or something, take a sabbatical around the world etc!! Thanks and good luck!!!
With city taxes that starting pay doesn't go too far! I think with my masters it was 64k. I would recommend living with roommates or trying to find an apartment by foot. I had a colleague who was older than me and found a place nearby work that was a 2 bedroom for $1400. He said he found it by walking around the neighborhood and asking around. He would give music lessons on the side to afford it all.
I’m an elementary school teacher in CA and living here is expensive AF and I was wondering since NY does offer a 6 figure pay pretty much sooner than 20 years would it be worth it to live there? How much do you take home after taxes? Also is it worth it ?
Nina Thomas I'm still out of state and I was thinking about getting my reading add-on licensure, so that I could be a reading specialist or a Reading Recovery teacher again in the future. That's 18 credits of coursework. I know that other states as well go based on this credit system beyond your Master's. I just happened to have credits, and when I looked them up it was more than I thought - 18. At least I have something that I'm driven to do, because for some happy in their position, going back to school isn't probably top of their agenda. I'm so glad you are thriving in the city. I'll look up the courses you have mentioned as well. I was really considering New York City hard, but now I'm kind of thinking more about the DC or surrounding areas and Kentucky. Living near DC means a quick bus ride up to NYC anytime-breaks or long weekends perhaps. 😉
First I want to thank you for this video! It is so helpful! I have a question. Do you know if any type of master’s degree is considered for a salary increment? I've checked the information available on the official website, but it doesn't specify what kind of master’s degree is required. I currently have an MSc in biological anthropology in addition to my bachelors in biology. I would get my master in education as well since it is required during the teaching fellowship. That is if I get accepted into the fellowship. It would be nice to have that extra salary while working as a fellow since I would need to pay for the master of education. I guess that if this is true, any extra master's degrees would just count as extra credits for a salary increment. This is all quite confusing since I've been living in Spain for most of my life, even though I am a New Yorker 😅, and things are very different over here. Thank you very much again for this, I've been literally searching for info online the entire day and finally came across this channel!
Hmm I'm not sure if any masters would be allowed but I think it might be allowed. The best way to check is to apply online for the salary step and see if it's accepted. Once you have your masters in education you should defn be well over the requirement for MA +30 credits and should be on the highest possible level for your # of years of experience. I'm so glad I could help! Please feel free to ask other questions. I have another video up about the different teacher certification options in NYC if you're interested.
Perhaps I can help. You would need to complete a Masters degree for teaching, which based on your degree would probably be science. Your other masters degree would bump you all the way to Master + 30 or highest salary. What fellowship are you looking at? Also depending on the work you’ve done previously you may also get credited with work experience to also move you up a salary step.
Hello Ma'am I am a new graduate elementary teacher here in the Philippines. Is there any way for me to start my teaching career there in New York? Hoping for your reply 😊 I enjoy watching your vlogs ❤️
Yes! Check out this website: www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/rightpathway.html It onlines the different pathways to teach. I hope this helps :)
Hi I am working towards my masters to become a teacher. Question, can we afford to have a car assuming it is paid off, just worry about insurance which is about $500 a month, and annual bill of $2500 in dues for a small property , in addition to your living expenses, rent, utilities, food, tv, Netflix? Please advise, I'm trying to figure out if I can make this two specific bills work a in addition to living expenses in NYC and still be able to save some money 😅😅
I’m assuming that because you clicked on this video that you would be teaching in New York. It really depends on if you’re teaching in NYC vs Long Island as well as if you have dependents or additional credits after your masters degree. I think that owning a car might be hard. I take out money for public transit and retirement but my take home is normally $1700 each paycheck after taxes, less if I put money in retirement. That amounts to $3400 a month. So if you’re spending $2500 in rent and $500 for insurance, you only have $400 to eat out, see people, buy clothes, donate... I will note that many schools offer over session so normally during the school year I would get money from that as well.
@@NinaThomas Thank you..I'm planning to stay in New York but it is so expensive to live here. Rent is so high everywhere. Thanks again for the input! 💖😊
