Climate change and natural disaster risk are intrinsically linked, varying greatly depending on the country and region. Hendre Garbers, Senior Economist at Swiss Re Group Economic and Sigma Research, discusses findings from a Swiss Re Institute report that dives into changing climates on a country level.
Hendre explains that despite South Africa's resilience amidst evolving weather perils and relatively low economic losses compared to other nations, the country faces its own challenges, particularly with floods. While there are disparities between how flash floods and river floods will intensify over time and the varying damage they could cause, it is clear that only fraction of these losses are insured, leaving households, companies and states vulnerable to high costs.
