Because the crew kept the evacuation on hold so long and they had just a few life boats on use, people had to wait and started to panic. Some decided to jump and try to swim instead but bc the ship was still listing it caused vortexes in the water and took people who didn't have lifejackets underwater. Many died also still inside the ship, at least 10 to 12 people got stuck in elevators and drowned there when they lost the electrics. Saddest for me was the 5 year old girl and her father who were told that there was no room in the lifeboat and that they had to go to other boat in different area. Ship was already listing badly and when they left to find the other lifeboat, they fell into the corridor and drowned.
@mckenzie.latham91
@mckenzie.latham91 3 года назад
Also when they ran aground on the coast they started tilting so far that the lifeboats couldn’t be properly lowered, so those few they had already lowered/launched had to be used as ferries

The issue was that when they started evacuation, the ship was already leaning so heavily the boats on one side couldn't be used any more. If they started only half an hour earlier they could have saved at least half of the people who died.

I know everyone talks about Gregorio de Falco, the Deputy Mayor of Giglio, the poor crew member that died saving passengers, and that brave engineer trying to keep the fan from causing a fire, how all of them were heroes. They were and are still heroes, but there's one person that everyone always forgets in this whole situation: that woman who knew something was up and called her daughter back on the mainland. If she hadn't done that, there would be a lot more dead people in this story. Let's give this woman a W in chat, shall we?

44:30 Well, 16 years and 1 month is more than enough for someone of his age. He is 60 now, and he still has to spend 10 years in prison. So he will be a 70 y.o. May sounds cruel, but his live is already past behind. He is old, and I don't think in a good health either (prison, party life style and obese before that as well).

@okairo

@@mckenzie.latham91 Not quite. The prosecution originally wanted 26 years, but the sentence was reduced to 16 years, and the appeals were simply denied. Scattino was actually a competent enough captain, with all the proper certifications (it's apparently common for those with certification and experience to take on other positions while they wait for captaincies to open up), but he crumbled under crisis. Also, every modern ship would have equipment for measuring depth and distance, but they had to turn those off for the sail-by salute, or they'd also be flagged for performing an illegal move. Finally, the sail-by salute is said to have been a favour for the maitre d (why he was on the bridge), as his sister lived on the island. This was supposed to be a cool favour for them. The results were far less cool. Certainly the bulk of the blame lies with the captain, but all his bridge crew shares some responsibility as well, for not following proper procedures and everything. Crew elsewhere also had some responsibility. Like those who were supposed to sweep the ship for survivors in the case of an evacuation. Many lessons were learned, and changes made, because of the _Titanic_ , and a few of those helped to reduce the death toll on the _Costa Concordia_ . But when hubris and pride walk, mistakes will often happen. Costly mistakes. That said, _Costa Concordia_ is far from the worst maritime disaster of the last 50 or so years. Look up the collision between the Dona Paz and the Vector. The Paz was a converted ferry that had been well overloaded. She was sailing without certification, and most of her crew was partying drunk. The Vector was an oil tanker, again without certification, and with a single unqualified intern at the helm.

There were enough lifeboats for everyone, it's just that by the time evacuation was ordered the ship was tilted so much that some were unusable because they were at too much of an angle to be lowered into the water. It's really lucky they were close to shore.

@LorgeDelta
@LorgeDelta 2 года назад
Agree, but also I think he's the least accountable regardless of him being the one on the wheel. He is essentially a paid servant who was bought by a cheap company that wanted cheap labor. I think full/a majority of the accountability should go to the criminal company that managed to shake the responsibility through a one million dollar plea deal. It's like hiring a child who has no idea what they are doing to build a skyscraper. You can't blame the kid when the thing collapses and kills people. You blame the people that thought it was a good idea to hire cheap labor for an important project.

In defense of the captain, he had captain qualifications before being promoted and the accidents were not that bad and were dramatized for effect (though they did happen). He did do the sail-by correctly and the correction to miss the rocks correctly and had others not failed the crash wouldn’t have happened. The crash was a failure on multiple layers. Carnival had not maintained the ship leading to one the water-tight door failing, evacuation training for passengers was to-be done the day after the crash instead of before sailing, the third officer was not relaying locations and even spoke over the captain, et cetera. However, once it turned into an emergency, the captain was just as bad at that as he sounded. He took all the blame, and he did fail a lot, but there should have been judgements against multiple people including Carnival. Cruise sailing is safe. My parents did them multiple times in later life before my dad passed away. This was a fluke of cascading failures. That can happen in any walk of life, though this one was exceptionally spectacular, and sad.
