Internet Historian glosses over it, but most of the deaths happened during the panicked evacuation. People didn't know where to go and got stuck below the waterline or even jumped into the sea trying to get to land and drowned. This is why Schettino's initial refusal to declare distress and evacuate the ship is so important - by the time he actually did it the situation aboard ship had deteriorated so far that the likelihood of tragic accidents skyrocketed.

@@EddieB-ready which is why most warships don't have one. The only ones that do are the likes of cruisers or carriers, and those are primarily for cargo. Another difference between practicality(military) and leisure(civilian), since the latter is required to have those elevators to accommodate guests with disabilities.

The engineer manning the generator is a Hero... The only way I can think of manually turning the generator off and on to prevent over-heating means that he is tightening and untightening a main power wire(Enough to kill you easily) or pulling a main disconnect(Also deadly in bad, failing scenarios)... Either way, this is all while the man is STANDING IN WATER... If one thing went wrong in this situation... *Poof*, night-night, bye bye, I no see you later..... Pressure is nothing to this man and his assisting crew, and their fear of death compared to the safety of others is borderline extreme.

@@LckD008 Your average everyday drinking water by itself isn't very conductive, it's the trace amounts of other things dissolved in it (carbon dioxide, the additives that make it safe to drink, etc.). Salty sea water (which is packed to the brim with dissolved sodium and chloride ions) isn't just more conductive, it's like _100 times_ more conductive. That engineer was risking certain and painful death doing what he did.

@@flashtirade In theory distilled water is fine, but as soon as it touches your skin it's no longer distilled water but slightly salty from sweat or whatever. Dry skin is drastically less conductive than water or your innards. It's about a 1 megaohm barrier at low voltage DC (things change at higher voltage, depending on AC frequency, exposure time etc). Your internal resistance is low; around 1 kOhm depending on how far and what body part. Regular or even distilled water goes a long way towards dropping the resistance of skin; and standing in it, it will at least give your legs some kind of weak connection to ground even if it is distilled (it doesn't stay as distilled water for very long, and you don't know what ionic compounds it will pick up; even soap is a salt).

So, fun side tangent: testing a hair sample is not used to determine whether someone has used a drug recently, but whether they have done drugs over a prolonged period. This is because it takes time for drugs to accumulate in hair follicles, and it will not usually rise to the level of being detectable by labs unless someone has been doing a specific drug consistently over the course of months or years.

59:59 I don't know about that one chief. If someone passes on their driving exam, then decides to go drive down the sidewalk and kill a couple of people walking there, you don't blame the driving instructor. In the end, the people on the bridge were in charge and responsible for their passengers and the crew's safety onboard that ship. If people die on their watch because of negligence it's their ass.

While the captain absolutely deserved a lot of the blame, especially for all the damage that he caused while attempting to cover up the problem, I'd say he took a lot more of the heat for the actual crash than I think he deserved. Even if he was reckless, if his orders hadn't been constantly fucked up by the helmsman, they would have been fine. And of course, even with those fuck ups, there were still plenty of opportunities to check and correct the course. Having all of the blame go to him while everyone else either got community service or just... disappeared, absolutely feels like they were forcing him to be the *only* scapegoat, instead of acknowledging that multiple people are responsible for a disaster this big.

@@Some__Guy Yeah, if you leave out him abondoning ship and failing to fulfill his duties during an emergency while also giving orders as the highest ranking officer on board that kept passengers from evacuating while lying to harbor master and the coast guard, then yeah. He is a scapegoat.

@@Some__Guy All of the other failures involved In a situation like those have to go through the captain though. He didn’t enforce proper protocol (GPS Updating) which prevented them from correcting their course in time, he tried a risky maneuver, he wasn’t enforcing the chain of command, he lied to teams of people that are purpose-built to help save the lives aboard his ship, he abandoned said ship while there were still passengers aboard, he prevented passengers from evacuating by feeding them falsehoods, and was distracted while on the bridge. A captains job is to keep his ship in *ship-shape* and he failed miserably.

@@Some__Guy he deserved all the heat there is, accidents happen even if the situation leading up to such dramatic events ususally include a plethora of totally avoidable errors. But when the crash has already happened and you look into what turned the situation from bad to miserable you kinda fucos on what made it miserable later on and not what made it bad in the first place. The more drastic error takes all precedence. Also you can lead a discussion without flaming and cussing. Back to your arguement, I can see why you would demand more attention to the fact that all the other crew were let off so easily, but they got plea-deals for being witnesses against Schettino. They did deserve a lot more heat and trouble for what their action or inaction has lead up to, but the court deemed Schettino's way of handling his staff, of giving directives, giving clear and precise commands in a situation where he is not willing to make the right decision while further increasing deaths, suffering and as a side note damages and further hindering rescue efforts with his inaction or at times backwards actions a bigger deal. The Company too payed a fine and was let of the hook, Schettino was the top guy and garned the media attention as well as the attention of investigators and judges/juries. It should not come as a surprise that he gained as much attention as he had especially with his secret lover as well as fellow crewmates gaining pleadeals with the court for giving testimony against Schettino. And while it is unfair they gained less heat it is totally fair he gained most of the blame since it was his idea in the first place to get that close, if you want to go critical you should be willing to accept the risk of not succeding in your dastardly entertainment doings.

There's a sailor who reacted to this and he commented that language barrier is common on sea vessels because they would have crew members from different nationalities. This of course became the number one cause of issues during operation.

"How come we didn't hear about this?" Because it didn't happen in the USA "How much did they pay to keep this Hush-Hush" Nothing. You saw the reporters at the scene, the people filming their own footage. This was front page news in loads of countries, for years.

Even we here in Canada heard about that, and it was used up north in BC and northwest territories as a warning because theres a huge issue with ferries being run like that ship up there with drunk captains and poor follow through of procedure and professionalism

Something I've only just noticed now is how commonly accidents happen after roughly 100 years. Titanic and Costa, Spanish Flu and (THE BIG COUGH) and fortunes. I don't think it's really even a coincidence. For fortunes, there's the first generation that makes businesses and fortunes (and at roughly 30 to 35 have a child). The child grows up and maintains the wealth, knowing how much work was put into it and after 30-ish years, another child is born into wealth. They waste it as they were born into it and don't understand how hard it was to make. I think this cycle of forgetting is just hard wired into us humans.

In German there is a word called “Ruinenlust” which refers to the feeling you get when visiting abandoned places. I always find words that are unique to specific languages to be very interesting because of how helps give people different cultural perspective to look at. Another example is “Komorebi” which is a Japanese term for the sunlight passing through tree leaves. Sorry for rambling I just felt the urge to share.

@@warbacca1017 Thanks, I mean english is closest to being Germanic than it is to anything else. In fact the only languages that can be considered in the same family as it are the three variations of Frisian on continental Europe. Frisian even uses “s” at the end of words to denote possessiveness. Another example of these words would be “Waldeinsamkeit” that refers to the feeling of being alone in the woods. Which is fitting considering how many German fairy tales include getting lost in the woods.

From watching the extras video, the captain did have the credentials to be captain, it’s just how he landed it was weird. Those two other accidents were not as bad as they sounded. And from the sound of things, he didn’t do a bad job of being an actual captain. In fact his orders should have avoid the rocks after the earlier errors. In was a perfect cascade of errors that led to the crash that involved the captain, other bridge officers, and Carnival Cruises. From not following redundant procedures to not servicing the locking doors to not immediately explaining emergency procedures to the passengers when the boards (it was to happen the day after the crash). There were many responsible for the crash itself. But, oh yeah, once the crash happened, the captain handled it exactly as badly as it sounded. It’s hard to image the captain botching the evacuation and rescue any worse.

The passengers were awarded 40,000 dollars each from Schettino himself, not from Carnival Inc, which they will never get because Schettino doesn't have that kind of money even if he sold everything he owns.

The passengers weren't necessarily all that wealthy. Cruises are actually usually a pretty cost effective way to take a vacation. (Edit: Looking right now, Carnival has a 9 day cruise from NYC to the bahamas that only costs $429 - and when you consider that covers food, entertainment and your room for a week and change, that ain't too bad.)

I don’t think this was a cover up/damage control situation, probably more to do with news coverage state side. The incident was constantly all over the news for months at the time in other parts of the world.

It was on every major network in the US, too. It likely wasn't covered as thoroughly or for as long as it was in Europe, for what should br obvious reasons, but it received more than its fair share of coverage here.

The law you go to trial by depends on which flag the ship flies. For example, even if in European waters a ship flies the American flag, and someone commits a crime on the ship (e.g. kills someone), that person is considered to be on American soil, and will be punished under US law ... (especially if countries have agreements with the US on the extradition of people, if they abandon ship). The ship in which Schettino was, as far as I know flew the Italian flag, so the punishment was given according to our hideous penal code.

I just googled it; he wasn’t joking about “My Heart Will Go On” being played on the Concordia. Apparently, two of the survivors told a Swiss newspaper that they heard it playing in one of the dining rooms right when the ship started to tilt. That’s not all, according to an article by a New Zealand paper, one of the women who survived the sinking of the Concordia also had relatives who survived the sinking of the Titanic.

My sister works on yachts. Going from head of security to captain is not that uncommon. What happens is someone has all the training to be a captain, but there are no job postings for one. They would take a lower position (like head of security) to get their foot in the door, and be able to apply internally for any captain job postings as they come up.

the reason the carnival Corporation got away with just paying 1 million was mostly because of what they are and where it happened. Italy needs tourists and cruise ships for that matter. When they would have gone and made a criminal trial it would hit Italy just as much if not worse than carnival. So it was basically just this slap on a finger. At least that's what i remember the reason being.

Schettino didn’t exactly move straight from security to captain. He did perform and obtain all the proper qualifications to become a cruise ship captain. There’s a fantastic reaction to the Costa Concordia video from a Nautical Expert who describes how it’s not entirely uncommon for qualified individuals to spend time in other tangential roles while they wait to properly ascend to the captains position, or something along those lines. This does not change how utterly incompetent Schettino was, but this wasn’t some case of an absolutely unqualified buffoon being unscrupulously placed in the most important position on the entire ship due to corruption or lack of oversight. His incompetency just didn’t really start shining through until he BECAME a captain lol

I think the fact that his crew at the time were also incompetent that his incompetence became clear. So the fault lies with the crew on the bridge as much as it was on Schetino

For correction and follow-ups on any left out details since, even if I don't know much about content creating, I do know well that if you want an entertaining narrative, you can''t put every single details or it'll get boring or ruin the pacing of the story, not to mention make an already long video even longer

Sciteno got his sailing experience/licenses on other ships then joined the cruiseline as a security officer until a captains position opened up. SailorVince (follow the link) and Internet historian's Q&A clear up some of the weird impressions this video leaves one with.

For the "head of security to captian bit" its not too uncommon for someone to go from a random position to captain, it doesnt mean they dont have expirience it most likley means he had gotten certified to be a captian but there were simply no position open for him to be one at the time, now then it would make sense to work in some other capacity until oppertunity arises, especially some kind of work with the company and more so on a ship in some kind of leadership.

Only the captain went to jail, they received suspended sentences. Meaning, they are free to go, but if they fuck up anything else (legally speaking) they go straight to jail to serve that sentence.

So a bit of a defense for Schettino here. First, despite him applying for a security position, he did have the training to be a captain. It was a very "get your foot in the door" type of situation. Second, his 2 accidents were very minor, and just about every single captain for a cruiseship has had them. The second accident wasn't even to the ship, it was a ramp on the side that got a bit of a dent. With the winds on the ocean as it is, those kinds of things are common. Third, the woman wasn't even a factor in all this because she wasn't on the bridge. Lastly everything leading up to the accident really wasn't his fault. The company hired a helmsman who couldn't understand the commands, and messed up. Everything AFTER the accident was 100% Schettino's fault and proved him a coward, there is no denying that part though.

One thing leading to accident that was his fault was going at 16 knots while approaching an island, which was very reckless given his sail by salute plans. But yeah, except for that...

@@Dakerthandark That was his fault, but not solely his. Both Carnival Cruiselines and the former captain, Palombo, encouraged him to do it. It was common procedure even if it's a bad idea and he'd probably done it many times before. If his helmsman hadn't fucked up the instructions then it would likely be a close call, but not a collision.

@@Dakerthandark Knowing what I do about the industry there (I did work for a tourist company once) if he didn't do the sail by salute he would have gotten into trouble. The 16 knots is only an issue if he needed to make drastic directional changes, and he wouldn't have needed to if the helmsman didn't keep screwing up. On top of that no one was announcing the ships position, which is the job of another crew member. Now I will admit he can be blamed a bit for not running a tighter ship, but I really see the issue as the company hiring inexperienced for the cheap.

@@Shazam1998 As I explained, he certainly wasn't the only one at fault. Everything before the accident was the fault of his crew and likewise the company for hiring cheap crew. Had everyone done their task the accident would have been avoided. It was after the ship hit where Schettino really screwed up and showed himself a coward. That was the point I was making.

You have a point but you have to remember that the captain is ultimately the one responsible for the ship. In the same way that a an employer can get into legal trouble if one of their workers has an accident even if they have no direct involvement in said accident.

I don't see anything wrong with wanting to own a piece of history. Comparitably speaking the Titanic sinking was much worse, but it's such a rarity to find items and objects that were physically there at that time. It creates a direct link from present to past. 50-70 years from now kids will be learning about this sinking in their history books.

43:00 I actually really appreciate you guys talking about how this was on the captain and how this lady wasn’t rally at fault regardless. She’s obnoxious and sleeping with a married guy but their relationship really wasn’t important to the investigation or the accident on her end and u do feel like it seems a lot of attention and blame was put on her by the media for some reason.

8:15 I know I'm late to this video, but to be honest, this is one time when people with different languages end up helping to something bad they usually break barriers. However, there is a lot of xenophobic behavior with people saying these things. I hate to say that I wasn't born in the USA. Usually, at work, they never know that English is not my native language, but I have been let down by various jobs and even cursed just because I'm not born in the USA. The fact that I was the first on the test shows that I'm ready for the job, but as soon as someone discovers that, I'm instantly demoted to 'monkey' or something. The USA's education system really focuses on itself. Just look at people on the streets trying to figure out where countries are on the map... I come from a poor family, and even then, we learned what should be normal things to know about the rest of the world, like countries or CONTINENT in WORLD THE MAP! I don't think companies should prioritize the mother language because the rest who do it correctly are punished... How many Titanics are there? The titanic was a language problem?? I'm not blaming anyone, or being mad, I'm just saying that it's really bad behavior. These individuals have to deal with a variety of people, including clients, so you have to understand that could be challenging to handle all that hassle because you are not born in the place the people want? . I hope you all never miss out on any opportunities because of something you can't control or do anything about... I wish I could control where I was born, but i CAN'T, it's very unfair...... That's why you shouldn't know.. because there's no repercussion for this peoples that are straight xenophobic.... You guys probably know about Floyd... So you know its a common thing to people have preconception about something.....

Just to be sure I'm not saying they should contract people who doesn't speak English.... I'm saying the place where they were born doesn't matter to communicate effectively or being good at their jobs.... because its very rare people know I'm not native..... So my english is effective and also doesn't mean too people born english native speaker can speak always right.... depending the place or situation or job the native speakers can too speak wrongly or in a way that is hard to understand
