Challenges I encountered while living rural:
- garbage disposal is a bit more complicated
- In some areas there are limited housing opportunities (even though the rentals I found were affordable, there were not a lot available, which is an issue my town has been dealing with for a while now. However, towns nearby have more rental options.)
- higher food expenses due to smaller grocery stores with limited backstock.
- Taking care of a garden or lawn can be expensive (or you can do what I did, which is make friends with the weeds).
- The more extreme weather means I have to do more frequent fixes on my car.
- It is hard to find plumbers and handymen, so you have to fix things yourself (and sometimes make expensive mistakes, hehe)
Ways I budget (while I do not need to do all these things, I like to in order to be more environmentally conscious and work towards my goal of owning a home):
- I chose low waste recycling options (keeping garbage low reduces expenses since I have to drive to the dump myself.)
- I shop in bulk when I visit large supermarkets several times a year.
- I buy clothing and furniture second hand when possible (I love yard sales).
- I cook with more simple ingredients (cheese toasties and tomato soup are a winner) and grow my own veggies and tea herbs.
- I limit my driving by trying to plan a lot of errands on the same day.
- While this isn’t budgeting related, I do love to patronize artists and creators that make work that speak to me. I recently tried to purchase all my Christmas gifts from small businesses. I find it a very meaningful way to connect with other artists.
- I find I naturally spend less due to not being exposed to as many advertisements on billboards/magazines/internet. I had never realized how much these ads influenced my spending until I moved. Another way I limit this is by pre-downloading tv shows and audiobooks and having set times to use social media, as I do not have wifi at home.
- I try to educate myself on financial management as much as possible, prioritizing health insurance if possible and trying to prepare for retirement (even if it’s only a tiny contribution). I know this isn’t always possible for everyone, but the more I learn the more I realized how important it is.
As I mentioned before, when I first started considering a transition over here I was 21. I eventually did get assistance from my family in order to start a new job. On the internet I notice there are a surprising amount of individuals who find it shameful to get support from others as a young person, but I do not believe that is true. While it is definitely an incredible blessing to have parents that can help you relocate, one that I am very grateful for, there is absolutely nothing wrong with accepting help if you need it (from anyone, not simply family). I have never met anyone who hasn’t received help from someone else during some time in their lives, I think it’s beautiful to build bonds and relationships in this way as long as it’s done with honor and respect for others.
If there is one thing I’ve found empowering, is finding practical ways to work towards your dreams. Every if it’s baby steps, you can clearly see the progress you are making and feel very motivated to keep working towards your goals.

I quit my full-time job, because I got anxieties and panic attacks from it. I was working as team leader 6 years and gave my whole life just for this job but I felt empty and that I wouldn't live - just for the sake of money and safety. I started my career as artist in September this year and currently I do not have the safety of regular incomes but I feel great. I do live again and enjoy the little moments far more. And I get a lot support from my family what is a great feeling. It showed me that they love me for who I am not for what I do. They want me to be happy and this gives me a way more safety feeling than money could ever do. Thanks Paola for always reminding us what is really important. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ And again this video is a masterpiece. So many beautiful shots. ❤️ ❤️

Dear Paola. I want to share a little story with you. 💕 In short, I found your video last year “make paper with me” and it changed my whole life. I am not kidding. I had been stuck in the city for 13 years not really tuning into how much I was hurting. How much I missed home. My quiet island. I am autistic (which I didn’t know at the time) so Im very overwhelmed with senses and feelings. And I was living in the worst place. Truly the hardest time I ever experienced. My addiction came back as a coping mechanism to get through this. Alcohol, binging, allergic foods, starving. You name it. BUT every week YOU kept my hope alive. You kept me calm when I was so defeated and tired and sick and wanted to end it all. I remember I even left a message on your page saying this was the last one I would ever watch. Cause I thought I would die. It was dark times. But ever since that first video - you sparked my inner dreamer and child back to life. My need and yearning to feel safe and happy became so strong. And it became my driving force. I bought one of your paintings and have kept it in my desk for a year now. 🌹Waiting for it to be hung in my new place. But I never got a place until now! I am finally moving back to my beautiful island. My hometown. The wait is over! ♥️ I truly mean it when I say you had a very big part in saving my life and keeping me sane and peaceful when I really didn’t know how to continue forward. Your kind spirit and words. The escapism of your valley. Laughing at sweet eigir (is it spelled right?) and crying over sweet Darcy. Gasping and being I awe of the way you pay attention to the gorgeous things in nature many people don’t think twice about. All these things - helped me back to myself. Helped me save myself. So. You matter greatly. And I appreciate you very much. 😘

Having no peace at heart is like death itself, I say with experience. What I have found out in my past is, that the best blessing that a human could have is the peace of mind, and I am ready to dedicate anything to gain that peace. I am glad you finally made up your mind and found peace. You may surely get a new place soon to hang Paula's painting. Wish you good luck! Love from Sri Lanka!

Two days ago I lost a family member to cancer. He was only diagnosed with it last month. It really made me feel like we cannot take anything for granted and also I understand that death is inevitable. In reflecting on his life I recognized that he was a person who took every moment to appreciate his life and the people around him. He was everyone's friend and he was always willing to try new cuisines and experiences. Even though he died younger than we all expected, I have a sense that he didn't feel like he missed out on anything because he was never half-hearted. I feel like what you're saying is similar Paola. We cannot live from a place of scarcity. We can make each moment in our life count and eventually it will build up into a beautiful life.

To answer some questions, here are some details about my experience relocating PROS/CONS ⬇️⬇️ I am very nervous about speaking on this topic, strangely enough it feels ‘taboo’ to openly discuss having a poor relationship with money, or talking about money at all. But while considering privacy I still wanted to share a bit about it - I think no matter where we are at, it’s fruitful to think about our relationship with finances sometimes, especially when you’ve known what it’s like not to have enough for a long time and internalized that stress. Anyway, I appreciate your kindness and sharing your experiences ❤️ (There are definitely pros and cons to each living situation, and I will always miss things about the city, and vice versa if my situation was different. In my case, I was planning to only stay in the countryside for a little while, but after finding a good job and later getting engaged, I decided to set down my roots): Challenges I encountered while living rural: - garbage disposal is a bit more complicated - In some areas there are limited housing opportunities (even though the rentals I found were affordable, there were not a lot available, which is an issue my town has been dealing with for a while now. However, towns nearby have more rental options.) - higher food expenses due to smaller grocery stores with limited backstock. - Taking care of a garden or lawn can be expensive (or you can do what I did, which is make friends with the weeds). - The more extreme weather means I have to do more frequent fixes on my car. - It is hard to find plumbers and handy people, so you have to fix things yourself (and sometimes make expensive mistakes) - generally, Washington State has a high cost of living Ways I budget (while I do not need to do all these things, I like to in order to be more environmentally conscious and work towards my goal of owning a home): - I chose low waste recycling options (keeping garbage low reduces expenses since I have to drive to the dump myself.) - I shop in bulk when I visit large supermarkets several times a year. I also value investing in the small business in my town as I am able. I have never met anyone who hasn’t received help from someone else during some time in their lives, I think it’s beautiful to build bonds and relationships in this way as long as it’s done with honor and respect for others. I did move rurally after living in a very expensive city, so I feel it is more affordable to live here in my case (depends on where you come from and where you are going. Washington State is known to have a high cost of living). The price of homes in rural areas varies drastically, depending on how popular the area is as a tourist destination. For example, some towns only an hour away are some of the most affordable living locations I have ever seen as they are not so near the tourism hub of the mountains, so I always left it as an option if I were to move to an area where I could afford to own a home. If there is one thing I’ve found empowering, is finding practical ways to work towards your dreams - learning how to do something as simple as manage your money, no matter how limited your salary is - is incredibly motivating. Every if it’s baby steps, you can clearly see the progress you are making and feel very inspired to keep working towards your goals..

Yes, New York is very crowded - but it’s sure an amazing city with a warm spirit for artists.

I do love America and have visited many times, but the fact that any human being can be turned away from a hospital even if they are dying because they don't have the insurance to pay for the treatment shocks me to the core. I am blessed to live in England, where nobody is turned away, it is a human right to be cared for when most needed. Our health systems suffers with the shear weight of over population, but in my experience it is fantastic and we are privileged to live in a society that cares so much for their fellow man.

I was frugal when my children were young and we had a mortgage. So we didn't go on 4 day trips with friends in the summer, and we never ate out. At the time our many objective was to spend only what we had. Looking back it was a mistake. going out for coffee with a friend or going on a family trip once a year in summer would not have caused us to get into dept. It social distanced us from others. The balance you are talking about is true in both directions as life may be short it's good to spend some money on fun things as well as save.

A bit of a late reply...but your comment hit the nail on the head for me. I've been in situations where money was in abundance & I've also been in situations where i havent had a cent to my name. Growing up, finances were up & down in my parent's household as well & I'm now aware that the examples they each set were not healthy ones. My husband & I are young & have 2 little boys, but I have such huge anxiety around money, which has definitely stopped us from having fun, going on short trips or just being with friends. I'm trying to make changes, but finding that balance is not easy!

"On the internet I notice there are a surprising amount of individuals who find it shameful to get support from others as a young person, but I do not believe that is true." Thank you for saying this ❤️ During 2019, I had moved home with my family to take care of my mental health. After a few months, I began applying to jobs and was getting rejection after rejection. I was frustrated, but I remember in that moment thinking to myself, "I have a warm bed, food on the table, and the company of my family. There might come a time when I'm missing this later, so I will cherish it now". It just so happened that in 2020, I took a job across the country where I was away from everyone I knew and loved. It was in those moments of isolation that I thought about that year with my family, which helped me through some of the more difficult moments of last year.

"nothing material can make me feel truly safe and secure" are words of true wisdom. My hat off to you for knowing this at your young age, Paola. And, I want to emphasize one other point (though they are all great!). Let's please support artists and crafts people, especially locally, in our town, city, or village . Everyone, please know that your thoughts are very powerful. They literally create your own world. So, when feeling anxious, instead of sliding down into deeper fear and anxiety, STOP! Stop fearful creations. Interfere with a thought: "Everything is alright." "Everything will be alright." You might need to repeat this mindfully, whilst thinking about its meaning, many times, but it's worth it. Know that everything is alright. Everything will be alright. Be thankful for this moment and the gazillion of blessings. Through thankfulness, through appreciation, we create positive world. Everything we need and want, everything we will ever need or want, we already have right here, right now, even though in the moment we might not perceive it. Know this. Be thankful for it. Thank you.

After graduating in the height of the Great Recession and entering the adult world with college debt and no jobs in my area, I struggled with money for a long time. Not having it, however, made me realize just how ridiculous some of our "needs" were and made me realize how effective marketing and societal pressures can be. Trimming away those wants hidden as needs made me reevaluate a lot of things in my life and I found that I was happier without them. My husband and I are now creating a life where we work to live, a life where we value non-material things the highest and prioritize people and relationships over purchases.

This "wants hidden as needs" is a great way to phrase this huge category within anyone's personal budget. I still have a ways to go to eliminate them, but I'm happy with the trimming that has occurred, and I love this way of calling these many, many marketed conveniences / accesses / products as just what they are, and therefore, pointing out that they are often the culprits in disallowing us to make progress that we'd like to make, and otherwise maybe could begin to make. Cheers.

I had the strange experience of moving out of New York City to a rural area during COVID where, between the lower housing costs, cooking at home and no longer needing "fancy" city clothes, I found my expenses more than cut in half overnight. I discovered something similar to what you did - no amount of money can truly give me respite from my anxiety about it. I always thought that if I weren't under the thumb of sky-high rent, health insurance, expensive eating habits, etc. and able to squirrel away more and more, I'd feel impervious to any big life change. Yet even as I was able to achieve financial goals and habits I only dreamed of in my city life, new worries popped up in their place. Except in really extreme situations where money for fundamental needs like food, shelter, healthcare, etc. aren't there - a situation which I am incredibly privileged to have mostly avoided outside of the first year or two after college - financial concerns can exacerbate anxiety but they don't necessarily cause it. That's something that goes deeper. These days I am striving for a place of contentment and inner acceptance of the inevitability of change. And to not let my own fears about money harden me and close me off such that I think I can ever be impervious to life, but instead to soften me to give more to others and support my community, as I too have been supported when I needed it.

I am a college student currently. I work 30 hours a week along with a full 16 credit hour class schedule. I am at a place where I know that I am slightly overworking myself, but because of the security I feel from not being in debt I feel somewhat justified in my decisions. That is a weird thing for many people in Europe, since in some countries university education is universal and completely free. You dont have to pay never, no before or after. And that gives you the opportunity to study new things or change without thinking in the money you have invested. Too some of those universities have online studies and you can access too. I think a lot of people in America or another places does not know that university is free of any charge in other countries.

This must be hard, in Europe at least we don’t pay for our school it’s paid by our taxes and in France when you’re a student the government pays 50% of your rent, also a lot of advantages like social security for the hospital fees are like 200€ a year when you’re a student.

I`m older then an average collage student, to continue studying i live off student loans. I feel axiety about spending money and pressure (stress) to do well. Your video`s inspire me to spend more time ouside, going on walks and visit the forest nearby. I like to call them "naturewalks" for inspiration and relaxation. The fun thing about nature is, it doesn`t want anything from you, so when you go for a walk, at least in my case, you feel like yourself.

Accepting to live with uncertainty to some degree relieves my anxiety but it's completely natural to feel like this...i believe we all do feel like this sometimes. We just want that warm and cosy feeling to never go away. I'm sadly also overly attached to such worries...but i do believe that society pressures us to have everything perfectly in order...which isn't how life works and never will. I always remind myself that all these misfortunes shape you in a beautiful way. It's balance. ☺

I have been retired for a long time now and if I look back I see decades of worry and anxiety, which lead to depression.. The very things that I was worried about never came to fruition. Everything in my life seems to have turned out okay. I have what I need to live and there have been lean times and times of abundance. I learned ways to manage my life in both of these circumstances. I accepted help from other people and when I was able I was the one who gave to others. Both are important.

The one tip that I would suggest for money management is to have two bank accounts: one main account and one account for bills and regular payments. At the start of the month transfer enough money to your payments account to cover all of the bills and that way you know that all of the bills are taken care of and everything else can be used without worrying.

As always, I deeply enjoy and appreciate your wisdom and how gently you tread the earth. I get satisfaction from creating beauty from what other people toss at the end of their walkways for a garbage truck to pick up. My furniture was someone's unloved item that I transformed into unique and useful home accessories. Sadly, we live in a toss-away and consumer society that I have never fit in. Because of being an individual with imagination, the people who enter my house are always in awe of what I have created from junk. Because of my thriftiness I feel no fear of money issues. I know I have an abundance of inner resources that I have learned on my path through this miraculous, God given, life that will always serve me. Keep sharing your message and showing people how to transform nature into beauty and how large amounts of money isn't needed to have a tranquil and lovely home.

Very interesting topic & view, I need to re-watch this again. I've calmed my anxiety with money by simplifying. 1st eliminate all unnecessary expenses. 2nd get a realistic amount for the cost of living per month (30 days). 3rd divide that amount by 30 & know your realistic cost of living per day. For me this helps to know where I can save $ & the amount I need to earn on average per day. That is my way of thinking & dealing with money for now but like I said I need to re-watch this because I'm always open to more than one way of doing things. Thank You so much for your video's & their content, you bring me peace & a different view of life I want to appreciate that got lost over time.

Feeling safe is like a carrot on a stick. "If I have this and that, I will be safe." Regarding finances I've been always on a very low level. I learned how to make more from less and can appreciate little things. Rewarding myself with a book for 4 bucks is a joy if this book is one I wanted for long. But what I am realizing now at a point where the financial situation finally comes to an improvement is insecurity about other topics on "what if ..." Feeling supported is not only a material thing, it is far more mental and spiritual.
