If you want to get into Age of Sigmar but don't want to/have the money to play with full armies I'd suggest Warcry. It's my favourite GW game and one of their cheapest. Rules + army rules are free. Full warband: $60. Warhammer underworld is also pretty fun and the complete starter set is $63 so $31,5 a person which is one of the cheapest wargames out there! (though I'd compare it more so to a boardgame) Also a quick shoutout to mordheim my beloved.

Warcry: rules are free online and for a $60 box you have an entire army.

@@LetsTalkTabletop the OG two army box was about $190 if I remember right. That box is gone for now but a single army box is $90.

I don't see why you wouldn't include KOW ambush when you have included far smaller skirmish games, that cost more money. Ambush is a fantastic entry game that more than meets your criteria.
@LetsTalkTabletop
@LetsTalkTabletop 6 месяцев назад
To be honest, I've never heard of it. There are hundreds of good games out there. I've already been given many suggestions to possibly make a second video covering some more. Good suggestion!
@ashthornton1038
@ashthornton1038 6 месяцев назад
You literally mention it at 2:45, and mention not counting it because "it has like 20 dudes" ( which admittedly backs up the fact you don't know about it) and yet later in the video you talk about multiple games with only about 10 like blood bowl, Malifaux and Crisis Protocol among others. Maybe you should separate them off into different size games for your videos because your criteria is all over the place for this.@@LetsTalkTabletop

Super helpful. I add “Fuzzy Heroes.” I imagine there’s a copy of the rules online somewhere, but it’s not just minis-agnostic; it’s toy-agnostic. You can use stuffed animals, action figures, dolls, etc. The various sizes are included in the points costs in the rules.

Oooooh. I have to go find that one. Good suggestion!

besides the sets that don't require a proprietary mini set, are all of these games done with your own hand painted miniatures? I mean if you're not going to shell out 500$ for minis you're not going to pay someone else to paint them. Or are any of them out of the box ready to play? I've done a little model painting and I can understand why people enjoy it, but the idea of sitting down and painting 2 armies just to get it done sounds a little nauseating.
@LetsTalkTabletop
@LetsTalkTabletop 6 месяцев назад
The only one here that is pre-painted is HeroClix. A very fun game, and cheap. But the blind boosters gimmick irritates me a little.

Just a silly nitpick - the ambush box I bought for Kings of War contained 40 minis, not 20, along with a surprising number of little animals that aren't game pieces by themselves. But you're right that it is only a small portion of a full-size Kings of War game.

The problem with heroclix is it has power creep and then your models will be quickly out classed. And it's the opposite as far as model agnostic, you need version X of maybe the same sculpt but just came out later. So the longevity of your models might be an issue

I have been playing the preview rules for Mike Hutchinson’s “Hobgoblin” (the creator of Gaslands). A quick and fast fantasy mass battle game that is miniature agnostic. It is a lot of fun so far and the cost is just the rule book and a deck of standard playing cards. The rest is stuff you may already have laying around such a d6s, movement trays, and any miniatures in your collection. There is a free web page/app for list building that also provides a nice links to rules.

Give them a try! Not too expensive.
5 месяцев назад
Seriously surprised about Infinity! From what I have seen on eBay I thought it would be really expensive. 🤔 Also: I think Historical Wargaming needs its own category as there is quite a strong divide between miniature manufacturers and rules publishers. Letting you mix and match rather easily in many cases as long as the model size matches. Not to mention you can lower the costs further by playing 15mm or smaller depending on the rules you use.
@LetsTalkTabletop
@LetsTalkTabletop 5 месяцев назад
Another thing that surprises me about Infinity is somebody's comment saying that it was very proxy friendly in the community. I did not expect that at all. Infinity typically seems kind of pricey. Yeah, historicals are completely different animal. The problem is there is a bajillion different rule sets that are kind of the same, and many of those rulesets don't even sell miniatures, but they require miniatures of a certain type, so they aren't model agnostic really, so it's really hard to put a price on that.
5 месяцев назад
@@LetsTalkTabletop The Infinity proxies are usually contained within the same faction range though? I thought many of their miniatures are kind of limited production runs.

add mierce's darklands ( around the price of GW for better but metal sculpts) bolt action that cost around a box of troops and a tank, (30 mens per boxes from a variety of ww2 producers like warlord games or wargame atlantic) konflikt 47 the wierd war spin off of bolt action that cost a bit more, warlord of erewhon, barron's war, lion/dragon/xenos rampant..... and of course one page rules.

For Battletech, the starter box (A Game of Armored Combat) is $60, and of course it's $30 if you split it with a friend. The box comes with 8 minis enough to make 2 "armies" it comes with plenty of extras to keep the game fresh and it also comes with a feature complete rulebook that also includes construction rules to make your own custom units as well. The expansion (Clan Invasion) is $50 and comes with 7 minis and more extras/factions to add to the existing game. And finally, a different format (Alpha Strike) sells for about $80 at retail and comes with 13 minis plus a bunch of other stuff to help you get started right out of the box. In total there's enough stuff to keep you entertained for a long while and on top of all that they are cross compatible with each other so that means that if you decide to get all 3 boxes; that's a total of $190 for 28 minis or roughly 6 "armies/factions" worth that can be used for both formats. Or just $80 if split with a friend.

Although, it only comes with one rule book I believe, and if you're splitting it with someone else someone's going to have to buy a rule book. I probably should have just averaged out the cost of it. The person that was telling me about blood bowl told me you had to buy a rule book.
