So...who’s job is it to feed the museum leeches? And those poison coffin pills, I’d love to get ahold of that mold! They’d make some sweet earrings! Fascinating museum. Thanks for showing us!

The leeches may rely on generous donations from the museums visitors. I wouldn't mind donating a little bit myself to experience the feeling. Leach therapy and treatment is on the rise again.

I knew a doctor that worked before the NHS started in the UK. He had a bicycle to get to his patients and was often paid with eggs or a couple of locally caught rabbits, anything the community could afford to give. The better off ones joined medical clubs, paying a fixed amount each month which was invested in order that the members could have access to the doctor.

You know leeches are back in style again. Some surgeons use them and are great for wounds to bring blood flow up the the healing wounds and eating the nasty areas of the wounds so they can heal. 😁. Sorry I’m a nurse and I like this stuff.

While I sat watching this video, I listened to this woman, fell in love, married, spent the rest of my years rocking on the front porch watching the sunset, and listening to her soft, lilting voice, and died an old, happy man surrounded by a loving family. You should have been there... I don't get out much.

The small figurine at 2:18 is Mecki, the hedgehog. He was a mascot of German Television program magazine "Hörzu" ("Listen"). Quite popular during the 50s and 60s. I had two children's books about the adventures of Mecki and friends. Interesting, how this Mecki ended up in the Country Doctor Museum. :)

The Iron Lung reminded me of the one guy that had to ask online for someone to help fix his, as it was the only thing keeping him alive a year or so back. Great museum nevertheless, would love to visit it myself some day when I can get to the US. Just hope they keep the leeches away from me, they creep me out.

Very cool! I graduated from nursing school in '92 and had a ceremonial hat that we never wore except in our Nightengale dedication ceremony. But the teachers all got together and starched and ironed and folded them identically so we would always have a hat folded the Loma Linda way to keep! We did, however, wear dresses all through school. Glad that went away too! xoxo

Oh, and my mom was delivered by a country doctor on a farm in MT. Everyone had little pieces of their face missing as this doctor liked delivering everyone with salad spoons whether they needed it or not. My mom's side of her nose got messed up, and she had to have surgery and a tear duct rebuilt when she was a teenager. Her cousin is missing a little part of her ear. Lovely.

My grandmother was a midwife before we had a Doctor in my area.. she would deliver babies for chickens or pigs or money. Then when I was growing up we got a Doctor that owned a motel , he had one room as his living quarters and his office, he would give you medicine in a used PCH envelope and write the directions on the back lol

There was a famous rural doctor, Hendrik Wiegersma, in the area where I live. Didn't know him myself, but my grandparents did. It was a poor, marshy area with little villages scattered all over the place. He use to ride the country at dark stormy nights on his big black horse for emergency calls. Later he was one of the first in the area to possess a car to cover the distances. He was clairvoyant, meaning he could see peoples future. Lots of stories, some books and a movie made after him. There is a museum about him (www.dewieger.nl/), but quite different from the beautiful museum you toured for us today. Thank you for taking us along on your trips to all those interesting little places!

What a beautiful little house that is. And a great little museum. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge to be learned from reading old medical books, which I do. You actually see the progression of techniques through time. I have them from the 1800s on up. Manteo, NC is my favorite place anywhere & there are great shops & antiques there too.
