As the Supreme Court concludes another contentious term, it is once again reshaping the legal landscape. With cases on abortion, gun rights and social media - and potentially democracy itself - on the docket, this year’s rulings couldn’t be more consequential.
Now in its 20th year, the Aspen Ideas Festival is the Aspen Institute’s signature summer public event. From June 23-June 29, 2024 more than 300 leaders and innovators gather in the Rocky Mountains to engage in deep and inquisitive discussion of the issues that shape our lives and challenge our times, spanning politics, business, science, the arts, education, and more. #AspenIdeas

Glad to hear George Conway's opinion and I hope there's little reason to freak out. That said, I have two concerns. First, Congress does not have the expertise to craft detailed legislation on technical issues. Second, partisanship is so extreme that Congress can hardly pass a budget, let alone craft environmental, workplace, and drug safety rules.

True. It's insane. I am trying to be positive so I am enjoying that we got more than twice the signatures needed to get reproductive rights on the ballot here in Arizona!

Conway's argument hinges on " shoulds" and "Oughts.".... if you have been alive this past decade... those shoulds and oughts- NEVER work out.

jon, what George C. is truly missing is "the minutia". There is simply "too much" to legislate everything. Think medicine. Do we really want congress to have to pass a law for EVERY new drug that comes out? Isn't it much more effective/safe to have the FDA do that? There is simply just "too much new", and it takes congress "far to long" for congress OR the courts to regulate everything. Battery packs, and the chemicals in them... how long till congress acts on that? New industrial cleaning chemicals, how long till congress could legislate that? Hell, new shampoo's... you want to have to wait for congress to pass the law? OR do you want private companies to have free reign for decades until congress steps in? Lead paint? We'd still have it, if we'd have had to wait for congress...

Some do have the expertise- but with such a polarization by Trump and MAGA, the chances of well-crafted bills getting even a debate, let alone a vote are nil- EX: Republican Ok Sen James Lankford's border bill, killed for Trump's political gain, not to solve the issue at hand... It was purely to say looky look- the OTHER party won't solve the problem (that we killed by killing the bill)

Isn't the chevron doctrine working right now? I feel safe eating my food and getting my vaccines and drinking my water, because there are educated experts advising? I don't call a politician for my egg safety. I use a tax person to do my taxes, because he is a specialist.

So difficult to listen to people to people I disagree with. But George Conway is smart and thoughtful.

I'm a right winger, voting for Trump, and I watch MSNBC and other left wing media most of the time.

@@Lerian_V voting for trump? why? Do you want a convicted rapist for your president? Is it trump's proposal to have a 10% import tax across the board? (Thus spiking inflation 10% overnight)... Do you want an insurrectionist for your president? Do you want your president to pull us out of NATO, and abandon Ukraine? Do you want a nationwide abortion ban? Do you want a president who will sell pardons? Do you want a president who will implement project 2025? Not trying to be harsh, but there are 1,000+ reasons not to vote for trump, so I'm really curious why you'd vote for him...
