I've just watched 4 other videos on how to tie the cow hitch. This is the best. Straight to the point and well explained. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Very clearly explained. I'm surprised that in the end result, the left loop can be brought over the 'better half' part, and thus be undone when there is no tension (unless I'm doing something wrong). Is this not a risk?

When I first started using this knot I would finish it like a timber hitch. Once someone pointed it out and I tried it with the better half. I went back to finishing it like a timber. I've dropped some pretty big tops out of trees with it and have come to trust it more than the regular timber or better half cow.

I am late to this, but this would be great for a porta wrap correct?

Hi Educated Climber. Could you discribe using the running bowlin with a block. I use the running bowlin in rigging, and with the rescue 8 descender. Is the eye of the sling, the standing end of the running bowlin? Like me on the figure 8 descender?

Couldn't you just put in a double half hitch?

Great vid. Rookie here wondering if an end knot would keep the rope from untieing itself on those straight out strong pulls? Thanks.
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM

Anytime I have seen a cow hitch being actively loosened and untied by rope tension, a stopper knot wouldn't have helped. If I have a chance at some point this spring, I will film what happens to a cow hitch with a straight pull. You would need to actually see it. Thanks for watching! - Patrick

I was taught to follow the better half with what would essentially be a timber hitch to supposedly lock things in better. Any thoughts on this? We never pulled horizontally so no idea if it would prevent the knot from working free but obviously it depends on the tightness of the cow hitch etc.

Timber Hitch is just as efficient. Every climber is different and prefers different things 🤷 That's usually my go to is the timber hitch

The cow hitch setup you showed is alternative to port a wrap setup?

I have an unspliced bull rope I was gifted and was considering attaching it to a rigging block. I’m attaching it with a bowline and a fisherman’s back up. The knot is fairly snug to the block and using with the cow hitch with a better halfIs this an alright setup in your opinion to drop decent sized logs on a spare? Also love the vids, I really appreciate them. Could you solve the cow hitch lateral pull issue with a ending it with a double half instead of a single half hitch?
@SLOCLMBR
@SLOCLMBR 5 лет назад
I think that's a good setup, personally I use a bowline with Yosemite back up on the block anchor, then cow hitch or a running bowline as a basil anchor
@davidbeleski9791
@davidbeleski9791 3 года назад
I have been using the same exact set up myself. I tied the bowline loop sort of loose however so the cow hitch around the tree Does not interfere with the bowline.
@one80sx
@one80sx 3 года назад
You should only pull against the bight and not in the other direction because it will only loosen the hitch. Any other direction is fine including straight out

Hi, great instructional video. I am the new guy on the crew. I mentioned having seen this video and that you do not recommend using it on a straight outward pull. The guys are incredibly knowledgeable but quickly dismissed the info I was passing on. They do not believe it to be true and furthermore said He would not take any information offered by a person making a claim that it could untie itself. Could you add any more info about any specific circumstances that may play a part in it untying such as smaller diameter tree vs large, smooth bark, diameter of rope anything at all. We often use it in this configuration on 5 to 1 rope overs.
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM 4 года назад
I have seen it come partially undone on a straight out pull, one time was pulling with a skid steer, the other time with a truck. I will do a video on it at some point. Both times were large diameter trees...also, I'm not an expert. I'm just trying to pass on what I've seen... thanks for watching... - Patrick

@@TreeMuggs_PatrickMI Really appreciate the very clear demonstrations. I believe you are an expert not only in your profession but also in the way you shoot and edit your videos. I am interested in seeing a demonstration of the cow hitch being untied with an outward pull. I think a lot of people in the industry will appreciate it.

How long was that dead eye? Is a 16’ on a safeblock enough to cow hitch w/better half on decent sized spar?

Hi Chavez. My 15 foot sling works up to medium large trees tying the cowhitch. Then I have to tie the timberhitch when the bole gets larger. Or join slings for a longer one

Do you think that set up on a tree is ok using a thimble ring, instead of a hoist like the one you are using?
