Cast Reunion! Cast members talk! In John Wayne’s classic western THE COWBOYS, Method Actor Bruce Dern created an unforgettable character that angered audiences and frightened the young actors who co-starred in the film. None were more surprised and panicked than Nicolas Beauvy. The talented youngster had already made a name for himself in several films when he was cast by director Mark Rydell as “Four Eyes,” the character Dern intimidates and brutally dunks in the ice cold river.
What was the experience like for Beauvy? Did Dern’s enthusiasm add to the realism of the scene? What did the other young actors think of Dern? What did they think of working with icon John Wayne? How many of them could ride before they were cast?
Find out in this marathon episode of conversations with THE COWBOYS in a special cast reunion for A WORD ON WESTERNS. Join Rob Word as he talks with seven of the young wranglers. Nicolas “Four Eyes” Beauvy, Robert “Slim” Carradine, A “Cimarron” Martinez, Steve Benedict, Sean “Stuttering Bob” Kelly, Albert “Fats” Barker” and Stephen “Charlie” Hudis.”
THE COWBOYS was released in 1972. Celebrate the 50th anniversary with the young men who helped make the film a timeless classic. This episode of AWOW combines new material and previously edited segments to take viewers behind the scenes of the beloved western to create a 70+ minute experience for those who just can’t get enough of THE COWBOYS.
Thanks to the actors for joining us and sharing their memories.

Bruce Dern was the best “bad” guy in The Cowboys. I was a grown woman but he scared me. And there is no one like John Wayne. I guess I’ve watched every western movie he’s ever made and I never get tired of them. I understand when one of the men said they felt like he had their backs. You just felt safe and a lot more honorable with him.

Just to listen to these grown men talk about when they were young teenagers and their interaction with John Wayne, Bruce Dern, Roscoe Brown and others is PRICELESS! You have made something here for the ages. How I wish you could have interviewed the Duke, Roscoe and, MAYBE you could still get Bruce Dern on your show!! Thank you for these priceless interviews that we're all eating up! And I'm glad I stuck around to the end to hear the song !!! Awesome song!

The scene where Wayne dies always cracks me up in not in the way you think. I mean Wayne was kicking Derns behind as Wayne turned and said poo at Dern as he wanted to turn around then shoots him . Wayne was like big foot walking away. He had told Dern before they film it that people will hate your guts after you shoot me Wayne told him .

Great interviews, Rob! I had seen most of them before but still interesting. I saw "The Cowboys" at the theater in Germany while I was in the Army. That was the year that I turned 21 and was able to vote for the first time. I was already a fan of Roscoe Lee Brown, Bruce Dern, Slim Pickens, and of course the great John Wayne. I raised my daughters on John Wayne movies, including non Westerns, and had seen the others in various movies and television shows. (Another favorite was "Support Your Local Sheriff" where Bruce Dern showed his comedy skills with other great actors.) "The Cowboys" made me a fan of Robert Carradine and A. Martinez who I have followed since. I would have loved to have met John Wayne, or even been in a short scene in a movie with him if I was just an extra that he shot and killed. Now I am a fan of Rob Word. 👍👍👍😄😀

Very true about how nobody knows how to make good westerns anymore. Sad that it is an art that is unfortunately long lost. I try to watch today's westerns and feel terribly disappointed. Very first failure right off the bat is the actors look like they just came from a costume store, manicured beards, could go on and on. Soon we will even lose the experienced western actors from the western haydays. We need Clint Eastwood, maybe even Bruce Dern or Sam Elliot to make and direct some westerns and hope he can pass the know how on.
