Her voice is a perfect example of an Irish lilt I think it has something to do with the Irish accent. That yodeling is known as keening an Irish wailing often used during funerals as a form of grieving. The best example of this you can see is U2 live at Slane Castle (2001), the bridge between the songs All I want is you and Where the streets have no name when Bono begins keening for his father who's funeral he had attended earlier that day before the concert
Sadly, Dolores O'Riordan was but 46 years old when she left us. Gone too soon for sure. Her keening (sound of Irish grieving) still hits you straight in the heart even after almost 30 years.
True celtic beauty.... the voice that takes you from the edge of childhood into adolescents right into full adult ....no one could ever replace Delores
Glad to see you're getting around to more of the Cranberries. Would like to see your reaction to a couple more of theirs, Ode to My Family, and When You're Gone.
So glad you see you react to this song. I've always liked the Cranberries, but this song is probably my favorite song of theirs. It's just so beautiful. Delores O'Riordan (may she rest in peace) harmonizes with her own beautiful voice throughout the song. That "yodeling " she does is called "keening..." It's like an Irish form of yodeling. This song nearly always brings a tear to my eyes when I hear it.
RIP Dolores. Gorgeous Elfin girl.. No Need To Argue is still one of my top twenty albums.. Saw her live once.. She was incredible .. Shy and she never realised how good she was and was very self deprecating
she is amazing. one of a kind. i LOVED the way she sang. when I started buying CD's in the 90's, *The Cranberries* _No Need To Argue_ was the 2nd CD I bought. In case you care... my first CD was *Hootie & The Blowfish* _Cracked Rear View_
Love The Cranberries, and Dolores' vocals, including the great harmonies she layers her lead vocals with - that's as much a part of their sound as the keening. IMHO, the Cranberries were as much as part of the 90's sound as Nirvana and all the grunge bands, who were phenomenal. One of the other big female led alt-rock band of the 90's was The Sundays, whose lead singer is Harriet Wheeler. You should hit them too. Start with "Here's Where the Story Ends". After that, we'll have to hook you up with The Breeders and Belly, as long as we're talking great 90's bands with female leads. Thanks for listening and keeping great music alive! Peace from SF
Enjoyed the reaction Jamel. Take a listen to 'Ode To My Family', it's another wonderful showcase of Delores' voice, and as always the band sound great too.
I fell in love with The Cranberries the moment I heard Dolores’ voice. She will never be forgotten. I love all of their music but my favorites are “Pretty” and “Salvation”. Thank you for reacting to The Cranberries. RIP DOLORES. We will always love you.
You will hear that same sound from many Irish artist. In particularly those from the west coast of Ireland where Dolores was from Limerick. There’s a traditional type of music called Sean-nós (old Style) in that tradition they have a sound call Keening it’s a lament conveying deep loss.
Dolores was definitely a Good Human. Who had a lot of unfair bad things happen to her. The male back-up vocalist at the end was the person she was singing about. Glad you noticed the drums. Cause Fergal Lawlor has such good instincts. Emotional drummer for an emotional songwriter. Perfect.
“I feel like my chair’s floating” may be one the best descriptions I’ve ever heard about her genius… she was and is a musical hero of mine. Every song, every album, start to finish means everything to my heart! I’m so lucky I got to see her and the band live..thank god!❤️❤️💔❤️❤️
I loved the Cranberries back in the 90s. Dreams is such a great song. I love watching you finding new music. There is that vicarious thrill of hearing a great song for the first time. That a lot of us know these songs doesn't really matter. Your reaction brings those memories back and somehow makes the song better. I love that.
Thanks for brightening my evening! Such a driving beat with Dolores' lilting. I loved this song from the first time I heard it. It's hard to believe this and "Linger" are almost 30 years old. Dolores was one of a kind. RIP
I loved your reaction to her beautiful voice. The voice of an angel. There are lots of beautiful songs to be sung by her in the future that we will never now hear.
1:40 💫 yes Jamel - you get it! What a joy to see you feel the same way we (the fans) do about Dolores and this brilliant band. Thankyou brother, Dan from Australia 🇦🇺🙏🏼
Hi Jamel - you mentioned Fleetwood Mac so thought I'd let you know that the Cranberries do live cover of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way. It's very good. You get a sense that they really respect Fleetwood Mac and do them proud with their version.
I love the way she sings this and most other of Cranberries' songs with the keening or head-chest yodel which works so well and makes Cranberries what they were....RIP amazing Dolores! thx for sharing Jamel :)
Howdy hi hi Janel! Oh, yeah, I fell in love with her voice the first time I heard it as well. On the day she died, she was set to revise her lyrics for the song zombie with the group Bad Wolves. They went ahead and released the song and gave all the proceeds to her children. That woman knew some real heart break in her life. And I think that's what we hear in her voice as she belts out these hauntingly beautiful pieces.
Love, love, love this song. Bought this CD before a left on solo drive to Ottawa from Toronto back in the day, and wore it out. Always used to buy a new CD or 2 for long trips - then when you hear those songs again, they have so many memories attached.
The simplicity of this song is what makes it beautiful, it's an unadulterated expression of a girl's first love. There's nothing vulgar or tacky, it's honest, sincere and as Dolores knew when she wrote it, ultimately naive.
This is basically a perfect song. Hits hard from the drop, lulls you into bliss with the fantastic vocals, and closes like a banger, with an iconic ending.
I saw The Cranberries 3 times in the mid to late 90s in London and each show was superb; her voice stunning, somehow both delicate and powerful on each occasion and the rest of the band were tight and on form.
My younger brother was the drummer in the band I had in the mid-60s. I was 17 and he was 15. He had a beautiful kit and the drum track on this song is the way I always wanted his to sound. It was close, especially the twin toms and the floor tom.
My favorite and first song I ever heard from The Cranberries. It was playing in the train station at the end of Mission Impossible when I saw it in theaters. All their songs are so good, she puts you in a trance.
Damn, I love your reactions. You take the time to actually listen and digest the songs and all their wonderful nuances. You really do know how to keep great music alive! Thanks for all the great content!
Love this song, heard it for the first time years ago while driving and time stood still for those few minutes. Great performance of it that they did at Woodstock '94 as well...
Man, this song put the Cranberries on my musical map. I seriously think this was the first song of theirs I'd ever heard, and when it came on, I just cranked it. It's one of those songs that holds a special place in my head and heart.
They're balm for the soul. So many great songs she gave to us. Masterpieces like When you're gone and Pretty. Not Sorry, Linger, Dreaming My Dreams, Daffodil Lament... Also good: Sunday, Empty, Liar, Ridiculous Thoughts, Cordell.
I've been listening to this since it came out and I'm still stoked, baffled, and just simply blown away every single time I hear this song to this day.
The song was used on an ad to visit Ireland. It was also used in a couple of moviee, You've got mail, being one of them. Probably my favourite song by them. What a voice, sadly missed ....
I agree with you Jamal, I prefer this Dreams too, so dreamy. My favourite Cranberries song is PRETTY. Also from this same album. It's a short song but showcases her vocals beautifully. She passed at 47? In 2018
I just got here because I was looking up the songs in You’ve Got Mail. This is the song I wanted to know who sang it. The comments have educated me on the artist and the voice. A very ethereal voice and song. Stays with you. Thanks everyone!
Man I just want to say that watching you enjoy the music I've known for years makes me feel like I'm hearing it for the first time again!!! Thanks Jamel!!!
I have to be honest. Your face at 1:23 had me in tears. It's when you see someone else appreciating her voice it all gets a little emotional. A fan from Ireland.
I LOVED her voice. My favorite was when she would do the Irish keen or lament. Incredibly beautiful. The adlibbing she does at the end is truly amazing.
As others have mentioned, that wailing kind of singing is called Keening in Ireland. There are similar types of vocals in scandinavian music, Swiss (yodelling) , Portuguese (fado) and even native American. Loved your reaction ...the drums , guitar and oh my that bass. But there is no doubt Delores vocals are what made it a classic
I remember hearing Dreams just made me become really like Wow about Dolores O'Riordan's voice and made me a fan! I remember buying the cassette tape and listening to it on my walkman in 1993-94 as a teenager.
