Mark takes Coach Lockey on and what happens at the end of this video is simply golf crazy. If you have any short game wobbles or any short game issues or you have to play from some golf bad lies this golf video is for you. Will Mark put this in his bag and should you be thinking about your golf clubs in very very different ways. Why do more of us not have this crazy golf club, is this the best golf club for all golfers or just beginners?

Stop making funny and functional helpful videos Mark that improve our golf games and challenge the status quo! People want driver videos don’t you know lol. This video is absolutely brilliant and more people should watch it, make the change and put a "crossy wedge" in the bag...but people don't search chipper videos like driver videos. I would say that there is no club in the current market that will reduce scores for the average weekend golfer like one fo these. Truly.

Cannot thank you enough for this video. This 42 degree Chipper has really made a difference improving my up and down conversion from 37% to 67% which equates to 2-3 shots per round. As a 5.9 handicap that is a lot of shots. I don’t mention my handicap as any kind of a boast but to point out that this club is not just for double digit players. I already have the cbx2 wedges which were also game changers but this club is on another level. I use it as often as possible from as far as 60 yards out and as long as there is no bunker or hazard to carry. The loft, lie and sole are the secret sauce that makes this club great. Sits square and flat like a putter which makes it so easy to align and the large sole ensures my less than perfect strikes still do well for proximity. Once you get a feel for the carry and roll this club can really become a great weapon.
@iangraham705
@iangraham705 2 года назад
The main argument against these clubs seems to be that it’s only got one use and you’d have to get rid of a more versatile club to include it. But most amateurs would use this at least 10 times per round and if you utilised it for getting out of trees then you can add to that number. How many times would they use their longest iron or their 3 wood?

Good point. I have a local par 70 consisting of 2 reasonably length par 5s where I don’t even bag the 3 Wood for the round. I instead drop in a high lofted fairway wood for a few situations I know I might face. Anyway, in a casual round nobody’s counting if you squeeze a 15th club in the bag. I could pull my 7 or 8 iron out of the bag and not miss it because high handicappers aren’t exactly nailing the carry distances with some irons.😄

Bought the original in black "c". What's great about these "chippers" is you can play a full shot (9iron ish) and if you are good at adjusting your yardage based on backswing you don't even need a Gap ! Straight as an arrow. Just remember trouble if you open the club. It allowed me to put an extra club in the bag. Also not bad on a long shot out of a bunker due to the sole. only problem is they tend to run out and you need to practice as with any new club to get the feel. Great stuff guys. Good to see the two of you on the air together. Always a hoot to listen to your chatter :)

Very fun video with you and Matt. I have the Cleveland CBX wedges in 54* & 58* lofts - but I also have the Smart Sole C wedge and a CBX 56* that sometimes makes it into my bag. You are right about the ego part - learning to use the C wedge around the green does require a different touch, and it does feel like cheating sometimes. Lastly, I was hoping to see you pitch with it - from 40 - 50 yards out with an open green in front…you can get some amazing results!!
@ianburton9223

I've been playing the previous generation of smart sole. I use the gap wedge for almost all chips and the sand wedge for stop and no roll short shots. The sand wedge is good for bunkers with low fronts and winter sand, but I feel more comfortable opening a standard 588 sand wedge for everything else. Never thought of using the chipper, always use a 7 or 8 iron for that function.

Yes. I have had the odyssey chipper in the bag for about a year. It’s set up identically to my putter and I use it constantly for 40y and under. Definite one trick pony but it’s a trick that you will perform a lot. I think for UK golf and the conditions we play in throughout the year it’s a club that saves enough shots to justify the slot in the bag.

Hi Mark. 16:17 exactly what I have. I have gamed a 58 Smart for 2 years now and it's NEVER leaving my bag. Guaranteed out of bunkers and deep rough. I had a back op 20 years ago and can't take the 'shock' of a bunker shot. Smart 58 fixes it and I love it. I had a set of Cleveland Launcher HB irons. I sold the set, but bought a 9i, and use it exactly like a Chipper. It has the same, improved turf interaction -- perhaps without as much bounce. It's 39 degrees. From anywhere inside 5 yards off the green I can literally just think "Putt" and hit it. Thick rough, tight apron, fringe (or up against the fringe) -- even out of shallow bunkers. I know it costs me one of 14 clubs, but it probably saves me 3 or 4 shots a round (10 index), so more than worth the trade-off.

These guys are great. They don’t take golf too serious and have some fun with it. Mark is so up front with his sponsorship and even hilariously says “I’m going to show you this, but do whatever you want.” I do like that the Smart Sole 4 is now in black satin. I have the CBX2 46, 50, and 54 in black satin with graphite shaft. Awesome sauce. Great look. The 54 is the most important club in the bag other than driver and putter. I also have the Smart Sole 4 S. It’s the 58 degree lob wedge loft that almost exclusively is used out of the sand and on occasion for blasting out of thick grass near the green. It’s the silver color they offered before this updating to black satin. I tried the 50 degree Smart Sole Gap wedge out in store, but preferred the CBX2. I also dabbled with the Chipper which is 42 degrees. Your friends will give you grief, but other than that nobody cares what clubs or how big your soles are that you use between the tee and green. Cleveland bills these three Smart Sole wedges as a way to SIMPLIFY your short game. No doubt. It’s possible to get too cute trying to chip with the 7-8-9-PW until you’ve worked at it a thousand times. “Just use a putting stroke with your 8 iron.” I get it, but easier said than done. At 42 degrees the chipper could mathematically sit between your 9 and PW, but the club is filling a situation gap, not a yardage gap. I’m other videos golfers have commented they can get a nice 80-100 shot with this club. Here their 25 from green, 40 to the pin shot is where it can be money. I was impressed with the over the bunker chip too. The club is like a more lofted version of my Cleveland Launcher XL 5 hybrid and the Q-Tip…A variety of uses. I treat my 5H as a chipper, pitch, punch, full swing, whatever when necessary. I also like to use the putter whenever possible. Those two feelings would probably limit my usage of a chipper. A noob, or anybody wanting to try something different, who has a set PW, but unsure what to do after that could make use of all three of these clubs. I tend to think the Smart Sole 4 S is the most helpful though. Break it out when the sand shows up. Other have commented correctly that you could very well make use of the chipper on every hole.

My wife has the Cleveland chipper and sand wedge. I have the sand wedge and an Odyssey X-act chipper. The Cleveland chipper is a great club with a very consistent low ball flight. It has real heft to it. It is very much closely related to a usual wedge whereas the Odyssey has more of a putter feel and an upright lie. The Odyssey is uncannily accurate and has good alignment aids. Both require practice for distance control. I think both are excellent and it is down to personal preference. The Smart Sole sand wedge is a different beast, at least to me. My wife uses it out of bunkers with success and also for a few lofted chips. I have struggled with it. Despite some great results I have had quite a few skulls and disastrous shanks. Opening the face (except in good sand) causes the sole to drag and brings the hosel into play. I would definitely recommend trying before you buy.

The majority of golfers scoring 85 and over could benefit from these, esp. the Smart Sole sand wedge. I have given my Smart Sole 3 sand wedge (trial only!) to several friends who cannot get out of the trap in most situations. The SS got them out. So, why won't they play it? Simple. It's ego. It's the same ego that drives them to play tees that are 6500 yards vs. 6000, even if they cannot break 100 from the longer tees. Ego.

I think the hybrid is a perfect example of golfers not wanting to change. It took quite a few years before they actually “caught on” and now pros are using them. The first time I hit was I was like “wait this is much easier than trying to hit a 2 iron.”

All though I have a 3 hybrid, I just got a Rinky-Dink hybrid for Christmas and its like a whole new world. Instead of a miss hit 4 iron that squirts to the right and goes 5 feet off the ground to about 150 yards, I can get plenty of air and distance under it when I miss it it.

I do game a couple 'Crossy wedges;' but older variations: the Cleveland 2nd generation Niblicks (2011). I've built an entire short game around the 42* and 56*. When playing off of tight lies, though, you have to respect the fact that they provide up to 14* of bounce.

Bought 2 used ones after I watched this video. Put a putter grip on 1 and midsize on the other. Went to the putting green tonight played a game with my brother and friend closest to the pin first to 10 from all different lies. Won 10-8-8 so I'm sold.

If I ditched my 60° and added this. I'd probably save myself shots on the improved chipping and shots by not using the 60°. Just comes down to ego in the end. I would like to give it a go though. I do track my stats. And my 1 putts following chip shots ratio is not great.

I remember playing with a chipper back then it was such a great club , basically you can't skull or chunk so you'll always be close to the pin . I stopped playing with it just for ego but as a 15hcp I'm sure I could save like 4 strokes with it

@@adrianmacklin418 but that one use is where the money is made or the shots to us :) good short game is what's needed to progress further. chipper all the way, no handicapper above 15 needs a lob wedge so can replace that end of the bag with one for gauranteed short shots from30 yrds out

People say the chipper is limited and which club would you take out? I've been carrying a 3 Wood and 3 iron but since getting a Cleveland XL hybrid 3 have used neither of them. So there are two clubs surplus to requirements. Even if I only used this once a round it makes sense...
@jonasohlen5802
@jonasohlen5802 2 года назад
I think you should put it in the bag. I just shuffled around in my bag and took a wedge out to play a 3 driving hybrid and a strong lofted 5w so I don't have room for a chipper. I still consider playing low running chips with a bit less loft and the chipper is basically a 9 iron with a wide sole and a shorter shaft.

Bought the 42 degree chipper, even though my wedge game is pretty decent. It's in my upright spec and I need something to blast from rubbish lies (Coach's behind the trees observation!) and perhaps for muddy chip lies in autumn golf, which I just decided to pick up this year for the first time. Also because I have trouble using my hybrid as a rescue club (I rather use it as an effective fairway wood) Good video again. First muddy outings with it were great! Crossy wedge forever!

Great video. I play off 22 and bought the Gap & Chipper about a month ago. It really is easy as they say, the chipper has eliminated the horror show of blading it through the green and zig zagging across which i was prone to do on a bad day several times in a round. The gap is wonderful from anything out of the rough or circa 80 yards in. I really do feel they have helped bring down my score 4-8 shots a round.

Ironically, in the days of hickory shafts and "classic" clubs, before there was a limit on how many clubs you were allowed to carry, golfers DID carry "bizzaro" one-purpose-only clubs like that chipper (or at least their caddies did the carrying).

I don't carry a lob wedge and carry the previous generation smart sole chipper along with a Cleveland CBX 50* GW and 56* SW. The chipper makes it out of the bag a lot and results in a few up & downs with the occasional chip in. I just call it my chipping wedge. Every now and then I'll have some ask to try it out and they are always surprised. Put it in the bag mark.

Hi Mark & Lockey Great 👍 Video Watching you two having so much fun hitting the chipper reminded me how good my Wedge is, I use a Callaway PM grind 56deg x13deg bounce wedge 75% of the time around the greens, It’s so versatile play all shots from square - open - closed Face from various lie’s tight, fluffy grass, bunkers, It’s because the sole design is so cleaver, It has a good size radius on the leading edge, so you can play low shot’s without the leading edge digging in, and the 13deg bounce on the back the sole prevents digging in on square face shot’s, And the 56deg loft is ideal for 60yds and in, Thanks Mark& Lockey (give it a test) Dickey

I have the square strike but don't like it much since I saw that it's a club that has it's own technique and I didn't want to forget how to us the other Cleveland smart soles I have. So long as I practice both and pivot with the wedges.

I have no problem bagging them. I have Smart Sole 3 SW and C in my club stash just waiting to be re-gripped into my grip of choice. A Smart Sole 4 SW just arrived two days ago also waiting in my gripping line that will end up in my other bag. I do not play golf too often, anymore, and have noticed that my chipping and sand game are the hardest to remain proficient at with out a lot of practice. Hoping the Smart Soles will help me gain some confidence in those areas.

Love your vids as always! I have the chipper and a 58 in these smart soles and I love them! I noticed that you guys keep opening up the face, these clubs work better if you don't! they're designed so person does not have to deal with that. You could have gone over your bag and clubs out of the bunker with ease and not overshot the pin by just keeping square and going for it! Anyway, Mark put that chipper in your bag and give it some time and you'll be amazed how much you use it! As you really said, it's not how macho the clubs are! it's the score card that tells it all! Thanks guys! Watch your vids all the time!

I note you are demonstrating chipping with a fair amount of damp green to work with. I would like to see how the chipper works on normal dry conditions with much less green to work with. Great work and love the lie angle of the chipper which feels more like a putter.

I just got one of these. Made it the same length as my putter. Steel shaft like my putter. 2 degrees weak. 2 degrees up. Look, my game is pretty good around the green but this thing does feel like cheating. I saw here or somewhere that yes you have to learn to work with it and I agree. Like any wedge it need to interact with the turf or you’ll hit some nasty thin shots. But the wide sole smashes through the rough and glides through tight lies. Some players don’t need this. But the rest of us should consider it.
