The Craziest MLB Game Of All Time

On May 17, 1979, the Cubs and Phillies played possibly the craziest MLB game of all time at Wrigley Field. A game which had a final score of 23-22 with the Phillies winning in 10 innings after the Cubs came back from an 11 run deficit. This actually wasn't the highest scoring game of all time as the Cubs and Phillies scored 49 runs in a game in 1922. There was also the 1976 game between the two where the Phillies erased an 11 run deficit thanks to Mike Schmidt's 4 home runs.

1:11 - Chicago is actually called the Windy City due to the number of talkative politicians. But yeah, the weather can be blustery too.

That's actually NOT why Chicago is called the Windy City, but it's nice that it fits. But the real reason fits EVEN better - it's due to the blustery wind of their politicians spreaking! 😂

Fun Fact: This game was not televised in Philadelphia. Some will say they remember watching it but it wasn't aired until a couple of days later on tape delay but in those days they didn't televise every game and this was one of those games. This is why you can't find any TV audio from the Phillies and the only Phillies audio was from the radio broadcast.

How about Phillies pitcher Randy Lerch. He he hits a homerun in the bottom of the 1st to put the Phillies up 7-0 but he only ends up pitching a 1/3 of an inning and is chased after giving up 5 runs himself.

This might not even be the craziest Phillies-Cubs game. In 1921 I think it was, in similar conditions, the Cubs went up 25-9 about halfway through the game... and the Phillies brought the winning run to the plate in the 9th, with bases loaded down 26-23, before losing
@stephenkammerling9479
@stephenkammerling9479 Месяц назад
The Phillies brought the LEAD run up, not the winning run in that 1920's game. Assuming game was in Chicago, Cubs would have had their last at bat, the bottom of the ninth. Back to the 23-22 Phillies win, the 2 teams rematched about a week later in Philadelphia. The Cubs won first game 3-0. As I got older(74 now) my memory did tricks with me. I thought the final.score was 1-0. I think that was a 4 game series that they split.

Two mistakes: Chicago is called the Windy City because of politicians, and Harry Caray was still doing White Sox games

The great Chicago fire was in 1871. Chicago politicians went to New York to talk to politicians and businessman there in order to raise funds to rebuild the city. They talked so much the New Yorker’s called Chicago the Windy City.

I spent a lot of time at Wrigley in ‘79 but somehow missed this game. Something you said at the end puzzled me: How can a football team end up with one point? It took me awhile but then…. Team A scores a TD for 6; Team B blocks the extra point try and returns it all the way.
@stephenkammerling9479
@stephenkammerling9479 Месяц назад
That would result in 2 points today. Up until fairly recently, fumbles, blocked kicks, and interceptions ended point,(s) after play. .

"Chicago is called the windy city....because it's windy." Umm. Nope. But it's so obviously wrong, and you say it with such certainty, that maybe you meant it sarcastically for comedic effect? It's as accurate as saying it's called the "second city" because it was the second city in the country. lol

What gets lost in this is that the regular umpires were on strike and the pitchers later said they felt like they had to throw perfect pitches to get strike calls!
