I was living in Brooklyn at the time and had heard the buzz that Dave was putting on a free show. I half-heartedly tried to find out the details but eventually gave up. As fate would have it, our apartment was maybe ten blocks away from the venue and my wife started hearing the bass line from Erykah Badu's "Back In The Day". We opened up the window and the funk was coming through clear and distinct. We looked at each other and almost said it simultaneously, "that's Chappelle's block party!". We jumped up and like two giddy kids following the Pied Piper, made our way to Broken Angel House and witnessed history. Sweet serendipity! Thanks for bringing back a great memory!

Knocked it out the park as always! I must say…I did NOT know about J. Cole or the bass player. But I can say, I lived in New Orleans and after Katrina my mother passed away. My brother and I were avid movie goers and at this point had not been in a movie theater together since we were teenagers. We decided to go to a movie and because of the artist lineup and Dave Chapelle, THIS was the movie we went to. It was a delight…we never talked about it since…but I will share this video with him and we will chat about that day and I’m sure he will remember as I did…we were the only ones in the theater. And we had a ball…we danced around as there was no one else there…it was the most exercise we ever had in a movie…it was truly a concert for us and a therapeutic way of coping with the loss of our city and mother in a short time. Thanks for doing this video. It really made me remember that day all over again. Now I want to get a copy of that DVD!

Also, the Central State Invincible Marching Marauders played Jesus Walks with Kanye.. we spent days learning it in the Bb, only to get to the gig and find out they were playing it in Db (if my memory serves me correctly). We had to transpose the arrangement on the spot. I played trombone in this band For God, for Central, for State Best band trip ever!

Thanks for reminding me to “rewatch”. There was so much goodness going on musically at the time, I took this for granted. But in todays “just add water” market this is bittersweet and almost brings me to tears acknowledging our greatness, especially as a Philly dude watching so much of this unfold. There are still at least ten more deep dives you can extract in terms of the 6degrees of separation on that stage…..Thanks again for sharing. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

The acts Dave had on Chappelle's Show were all amazing and either established acts he loved, or newer ones he liked. I originally thought good for him for promoting up and comers, but I just think he put acts on he liked to listen to and though I'm sure it wasn't totally self-serving, you can tell how much he loved the music when they played on the show and in this documentary. Dude's just a big music fan and was geeking out on it all in his own laid back and chill way. But this lineup and the cameos in the documentary, along with seeing all those performers on his show, that introduced me to a lot of music I'd likely never have heard of or much much later. Gave me an appreciation for musicality and meaningful lyracism in Soul, Hiphop, and R&B that I still have to this day. Thanks, Dave!
