In 1981, the Idaho State Bengals shocked the college football world when they won their first and only Division I-AA Championship ever. But it almost never happened when during the offseason, their starting quarterback, Mike Machurek, got injured while playing a game of softball, and heard his knee pop. And chaos nearly ensued because of it. This is the story of how Idaho State's miracle 1981 championship run almost never came to be

Interestingly enough, the linebackers coach for Idaho State in 1981 was Marvin Lewis. I wonder how many coaches have coached two different teams nicknamed the Bengals.

Not the only team called the Bengals who would have success in 1981. Though the other one came up short.

I didn't even know about Idaho State's I-AA title. Machurek had to be that important to the Bengals if they don't even come close to the title if his injury was worse than it was. That was almost a costly attempt to break up a double play.

I believe in player staying physically active in the offseason, but like going into the gym or on a run. I draw the line at competitive sports.

Northern Michigan had a similar dramatic turnaround in 1975, going 13-1 and winning the D2 title against Western Kentucky (and Steve Mariucci after going 0-10 the season before in Gil Krueger's second year. I only know this as he was previously the HC at my alma mater, going 41-8-13 with 3 straight conference titles and playoff berth in 1970, losing 16-0 against Texas A&I (which, unlike UWP, gave out scholarships).

Reminds me of a story where an injury that happened in the offseason ended up helping a college basketball team win a National Championship. Brandon Rush had just finished his sophomore year for the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team. He had put his name in the NBA draft and was more than likely going to remain in the draft as a prospective first round pick. In the off season he decided to play in a pickup basketball game, lands awkwardly and tears his ACL. He pulls out from the draft, has surgery, misses the first part of his junior year, but is able to play, gets his starting spot back, then helps the Jayhawks go 37-3 (the best season in Jayhawk basketball history) and they win the National Championship. Without injuring his knee Rush goes to the NBA and the Jayhawks probably do not win the championship.

I'm guessing that Mike Machurek didn't play in the NFL, unless it was in strike replacement games, but he might have played in the USFL.

If I had a nickel for every time that a football team in 1981 won a league championship after finishing at the bottom of their conference 2 years before, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
