Even before Moddel or however you spell his name, took them to Baltimore, we had the Byner fumble at the 2. Even back then they always found a way to lose when it counted the most. Look what happened after they went to Baltimore, they win a superbowl. Every year is a damn rebuilding year for these guys. They are really good at getting our hopes up by having a few strong games and then it looks like they totally forgot how to play.🙄🙄🙄 I miss watching football, but not that much.

@@robertramsey653 I hate to say this, but here in 2023 I have a hunch the Browns are going to finish in last place, again. Put way too much money into Watson, gave up too many draft picks, too much meddling by Jimmy Haslem in decision making, instead of letting Barry and Stefanski run things. If I'm really, really pessimistic, I say Stefanski gets blamed and fired after this season, and the Browns begin another total overhaul and rebuild for 5+ seasons finishing in last place, having given up everything for years to get Watson.

Dan Dierdorf's reaction always gets me. Not because of his explanation of Rudd's penalty (which is correct, as games can't end on defensive penalties unless they're declined), but because he, just like the rest of us, was shocked that such an event could even happen at the end of a game.

@@jonathanfox1543 I actually felt sorry for him when it happened, but then, after I saw the replay it was ridiculously undisciplined. Yea, he was excited to "win" and he DID think the play was over, but the only problem is it WASN'T. It was very stupid on his part and as long as I've been watching professional football I've never seen any player excitedly rip off his helmet and throw it, even after a very exciting finish. He was definitely the goat, and not in a good way that game.

In 2015 Dierdorf was the radio analyst for his alma mater Michigan in the game Michigan lost to Michigan State where the punter mishandled the snap and the Michigan State player took it the other way for a TD. Dierdorf was at a loss for words and said he had never seen a game end like that, giving it away to the other team. He must have forgotten about this game 13 years earlier.
@astros7242
@astros7242 9 месяцев назад
@dyates I have seen that several times. Players rip their helmets off and throw them when they think they have won. In fact one example that comes to mind was Alabama vs Tennessee several years ago Bama blocked the last second field goal to win, the guy who blocked it did exactly that and the play wasn’t actually over. The ball wasn’t dead. The refs didn’t call a penalty but they should have. Bama won because no penalty was called.

@greencm7142
@greencm7142 9 месяцев назад
@newagain9964 - It's a safety rule that's still in effect. Imagine a play is going on and some players are in the thick of it not wearing helmets, while some others players have helmets on. Also, it prevents players from wanting to take their helmets off and use them as weapons. The irony of that is: I believe that rule didn't reach a Browns player a few years ago. In today's NFL, if a ball carrier loses his helmet while the play is going on, the refs will blow the play dead, and the ball gets placed at spot of where the helmet came off. If a player intentionally rips off a helmet of a ball carrier, just to kill the play, that's also a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty due to safety risk.

@davidroberts7282
@davidroberts7282 9 месяцев назад
Oh, he had a very good game, statistically, in that 2002 AFC WC at Steelers combined with an excellent season that year with Cleveland, and honestly, overall he had a decent-to-good NFL career as a WR. He just didnt make the most crucial, necessary absolute-must catch pass of his career when his team, his QB (Holcomb) and his organization needed too. As bad and heartbreaking as that drop might've been, it PALES IN COMPARISON to the drop Wes Welker made early in the 4th quarter on like 2nd and long with the Pats holding to a slim lead and Brady, TBF, did throw a pass downfield that was sort of over Wes's head that even great WR's might struggle catching, but usually do. Wes Welker missed it or dropped it at SB 46, along with Deion Branch also dropping a 3rd and long pass on the next play, New England was forced to punt, Giants then proceeded to drive the ball all the way to the end zone with an Ahmad Bradshaw TD, to take the lead, 21-17. New England got the ball back with less than a minute left, and any last chance of a miracle TD ended when Gronkowski barely missed the tipped-up-and-around deflected pass in the EZ. Game over. New England once lost its second SB in less than 5 years to.Giants by a margin of less than a TD. What happened to Wes Welker and the sort of persistent controversy that has sort of hung over him since then due to that loss, and another one with Denver in SB 48 2 years later, I think those drops and those losses are partly why, IMHO, he's not in the HOF now and maybe why his career didnt last longer and he didnt put up bigger statistics. I honestly think as very good, borderline great of career he had, Wes Welker left 2-3,000 receiving yards on that field. He finished his WR career with close to 10,00 receiving yards. In my view, he should've finished at around 12-13,000 but I think those 3 SB losses, my God, it leaves a cruel, vicious mark on your competitive spirit, nature, ambition, even alters the trajectory of some great players' careers.

Interesting how I came across this. This is the only Chiefs game I have missed in the past 5 years, but was listening to it on the radio returning on a very long road trip. Was really surprised, being on the east coast, that this game could be found on regular radio then, but never saw the footage till now. Amazing how interesting some finishes can be.

Now the Browns actually have had a good roster (which this is the most sustained they’ve had since coming back in the league) but they just haven’t been able to get it together after that 2020 season. Now 2023 is pretty much a prove it season for really the whole franchise or else they might be having the slow beginning of possibly another 18 year playoff drought.

I remember watching this game live from a bar in Cleveland. I was fairly new to the city and although I was a fan of the Browns, I'm really a Bills fan. The place was going nuts when the Browns went ahead (it was a DIVE bar and all the regulars were buzzed pretty good) and when they called a penalty on Rudd it was actually comical to see the faces of everyone at the bar. LOL. That was SO typical of those Browns teams back then. It hasn't really gotten much better for them through the years, but maybe it'll finally turn around for them this year as the city really does have phenomenal fans.

I remember watching that game as a kid. I was at my moms house. And i quit watching after Trent Green slid with 4 seconds left. I thought, much like the rest of us, "Well, this game is over." About 10 minutes later i get a call from my dad asking if i had watched the ending. And he had to explain to me what happened. And since he used to always record the games, we watched it when i went to his house a few days later. Unbelievable

That's why this game became infamously known as the Helmetgate game, a close second to the even more infamous Bottlegate game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars where, apparently, it's perfectly legal to review a play from two plays ago when it was obvious that another play had been executed!! By rules, once another play has been executed, the request becomes null and void, AND NOBODY CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE!! Truly, one of the greatest screw jobs in NFL history!!!!!

As a Browns fan I was pissed at the officials initially. Not because the call was wrong or that the game can’t end on a defensive penalty. I had thought Green fumbled & that the penalty should’ve been enforced from where Tait picked up the ball (which would’ve been a Hail Mary not a FG try). It wasn’t til a while later when I saw Green actually lateraled the ball
