This is not a conventional chess game. The goal is not to checkmate your opponent. Each player have his own goal to achieve. The game represents the difference between sane amd insane. Mr.Endon as an insane man who could not engage any interaction with outside world, lives in harmony. His pieces are dancing on the board and he doesnt even pay attention what is going on, what white played. When he checked the white king, he doesnt say check, even doesnt look like he acknowleged it. On the other hand, Murphy is a man who tries to escape the world, he wants solitude, harmony. Thats why he started to work in mental hospital. In this game Murphy desperately tried to open up the black's position, destroy his opponent harmony. His main goal in life was to live with insanes as one of them, (look how he tries to sack his queen just to open up the position) but Mr.Endon wasn't even aware of Murphy's existence. I think you should check out the annotations wrote by Beckett himself, they are great comments to illuminate what was going on in this game. Also they are freaking funny.

Also, he didnt capture one of blacks pieces because, well, insane men are fragile. He didnt want to disturb its mental sitution because of the fear of rejection. He was just inviting black to notice him as much as he can. But in the end, there was utter destruction for white...

Hilarious, Suren. My friend and I used to play this game every couple years while drinking whiskey and reading Becket's notes aloud. We would howl screaming laughing. The funniest game in chess history.

Hello Martin! Wow, that was interesting! I have to tell you that this was my first ever chess video and is undoubtedly of a very low quality! But since it was the first one, kept it...

Interestingly, there is always smymetry in Endon's camp, whereas Murphy can't attempt to symmetry. Even symmetry black/white. After 1. e4, Nh6 2. Nh3, Rg8 3. Rg1, Nc6 4. Nc3, Ne5 this symmetry is no longer possible since Murphy's own pawn makes Ne4 impossible. I'm curently working on this excerpt, I also think the Murphy's king pathing towards black's camp announce in a way his suicide a few pages after this game.

Well obviously there was an agreement to go for the checkmate without taking any pieces. It may have been part of therapy.

"Murphy" is a superb novel, although in places I must admit I found it baffling.

If this is true it was a very funny game. not a single piece captured and the patient swinging on the chair forwards and backwards. Maybe this was the day morphy gone mad :)
