The character was based on Reggie Harding. Harding was selected by the Detroit Pistons as the first player drafted into the National Basketball Association (NBA) without having played in college. However, he battled addiction to heroin his whole career.

As a 16-17 year old in Indianaoplis and a Pacer fan Reggie Harding was an anti hero! I believe he had several women he considered his mother. That is a true story!!! He was the first player to be drafted without going to college! He may not have graduated from high school and they made him wait 3 or 4 years before they let him play. Tweedy Bird was the point guard from Kokomo…Jimmy something! I guess the NBA doesn’t want to acknowledge what they consider unsavory.

This is where the myth gets confused with the reality. When Reggie first played Wilt he had five points and eight boards (Wilt had 24 and 19). The second time he had five and six. Maybe it was the third time? Nope, Reggie had two points and three boards. Reggie was much worse than a "character" as he's described here. Just look up Reggie and Florence Ballard of the Supremes.

There's a talented athlete like Reggie Harding in every large city and some small southern ones too.Years ago SLAM Magazine did an article on him.There are so many wild NBA stories we haven't heard.I wish someone would do a book on some of these hard to believe stories like the book entitled " Loose Balls" by Terry Pluto which had some wild stories about the ABA and some of the wild characters like John Brisker, Warren Jabali, Wendell Ladner and the infamous Marvin " Bad News" Barnes.Bill Simmons also had book which had some NBA inside stories.

We had a guy named Dee back in our old neighborhood. Dude was 6'8", great baller and would rob gas stations when he started smoking that shit. He was the only 6"8" dude in our neighborhood and everyone knew who it was.

Marques Johnson has always been of my favorite OGs to learn about. I knew he played basketball but for what team. They told me Milwaukee Bucks and he was a legend in his time in the NBA. The Bucks are happy to retired his number as a Milwaukee Buck. I knew he was in White Man Can’t Jump and Blue Chips. Salute to #8 Marques Johnson!!!

Marques will always be a legend to Seattle Supersonics fans. Color commentator with Kevin Collabaro during the Payton/Kemp era. Some of the most hysterical and entertaining sports broadcasts ever.
