Has Gareth Edwards made a better film than Rogue One with The Creator?
The first 100 people to use code ROBOTHEAD with the link below will get 60% off of Incogni: incogni.com/robothead
The Creator is the new film by writer/director Gareth Edwards. This is his follow-up film after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. A film he lost control of when Katleen Kennedy invited Tony Gilroy to step in to change the tone of the movie, Would The Gareth Edwards version have been a better film? Or was Kathleen Kennedy right to replace him? Well after seeing The Creator I think I have the answer.

I bought a ticket to see it Thursday, but was late leaving the house and not wanting to miss ten minutes of the beginning for a film I thought might be significant I had to force myself to stay home and book to see it at another cinema the next day. Then I left on time but they wanted to know if I wanted food. Well, I did as I had not had my breakfast or any lunch and it was lunchtime, but again I knew waiting for the food would make me late and said so, but the woman said she would be happy to take it up to me in Screen 3 and I could go and sit down and she would have no problem finding me as no one else was in there. Uh oh. I tried not to be put off by that, and went up and took my seat, and she turned up with the gourmet hotdog I had ordered thirty seconds before the film started. There was a early caption card thingy explaining an important plot point about what The Creator is and the name they have for it which is pretty important to read if you are to follow the rest of the film, unless you are prepared to muddle through. Even if you aren't into science-fiction it is a solid family drama with great performances, and cinematography of gorgeous scenery. If you are into science-fiction it has astonishing VFX work supporting a well realised world dealing with a profound theme that raises philosophical questions, both existential and moral. This is the best film I have seen this year at the cinema out of thirty one films. It is a 10/10. Since then I've been thinking it is the best science-fiction film that I have ever seen since _Blade Runner_ (which got ruined as far as a first impression went because I went to see the theatrical cut on release with all the unnecessary expository voice over and upbeat ending stolen from _The Shining_ and I saw various other cuts of the film with me ultimately watching it fifteen times until I saw _Blade Runner: The Final Cut_ which is excellent, but lacks the impact of seeing something seemingly not messed with through studio interference, perhaps because it was comparatively low budget, so part of me is thinking _The Creator_ may be my favorite science-fiction film), with _A L I E N_ being a close second (but as that is more of a haunted house story, set in space, I think _The Creator_ should be elevated above it). I also appreciate that it isn't unnecessarily bloated to over three hours.

Holy crap, it blows my mind how low the budget was for this. Haunted Mansion cost twice, TWICE, as much as this, and it looked TERRIBLE!!! Also, why in the world would Disney spend that much freaking money on something like Haunted Mansion? I salute you, Mr. Edwards, for embarrassing Disney yet again. :)
@Dilligff
@Dilligff 8 месяцев назад
They attributed most of these inflated budget to 'scrapbooking' which is basically filming several variations of the same scene and picking by committee which one they want to go with. Essentially filming the same movie multiple times. Which still winds up being confusing since they mention here that there was five and a half hours of footage for The Creator and it still came to a considerably lower cost. Chances are if a lot of these studios with massively bloated budgets were to get fully audited there'd be a lot of questions they'd need to answer.

Disney spends so much money on their movies because the producers want full reign in post-production. The movie is barely finished once the shooting is done, they might not even know how the stories goes by that time. Just saw it. First the great. The visuals are stunning, the art direction and designs were amazing, and the cinematography was gorgeous. Gareth Edwards really brought his own original vision to this film with its direction and world,, and I love it. One of the first genuinely original sci-fis I've seen in a while. The effects were top notch and very realistic despite the low budget, the vehicle designs were great, the scenery was fantastic, the tech was great, and a lot of the design choices for characters as well as the tech itself were very striking. The world building was also solid for the most part from start to finish, the MC is very relatable and written well, the actress for Alfie was great, and there are a lot of high minded concepts in here that I really appreciated seeing on screen. The bad though: some pacing issues and plot holes here and there, inconsistencies with Alfie's powers and how they function, the lack of a unified military force supposedly in New Asia (with the U.S being painted to be super evil (yet again) with heavy bias towards the audience being manipulated to support A.I, with A.I being written in this film as being super peaceful to the point of literally being portrayed as Tibetan monks). The biggest elephant in the room however, is the question of WHY sentient A.I beings have been reduced to mostly farmers, monks and fishermen- in what I can only guess is a highly idealized vision of what people in Hollywood want A.I to be viewed as, and not at all fleshing out its full potential OR writing what A.I actually is realistically: a highly manipulated, biased, copy-paste, malicious programming and efficient search engine that has made a very poor first impression on humans in the real world through systems like ChatGTP, A.I Art, and being used as a tool by email and call scammers, who can only copy and replicate what we feed into it, and throwing back whatever we inputted. That being said, the ideas behind The Creator were great and I was fully immersed in the world. Putting the film's biases aside, all they needed was for someone to go through the writing with a fine-tooth comb to make sure all the plot holes and pacing were fixed up. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable film, if mostly for the spectacle.

The film is gorgeous and revs up your imagination like no other modern movie. That said, the film leaves a lot to be desired narratively. The story doesn't really take any risks or go anywhere you don't expect. The Creator is eye-candy that's delicious, but still leaves you hungry.

They changed the process. The Creator afaik was filmed without blue screens and a small crew on location. The VFX was added "simply" on top after the final cut was already done. They filmed the entire movie on location, cut it and then added VFX. On top of that the use a prosumer camera that everyone can buy to film the movie: The used Sony FX3 only costs around 5000$. No 150 000 film camera (ARRI ALEXA 65) here. And it looks good. There is no need for all that bloody expensive equipment. I hope more producer/director take a note here. The damn budgets need to go down. Yes it will lose some peoples jobs (afaik The Creator had only one gaffer) but it will make the industry more sustainable and reduce investment risks. Instead of one too expensive studio risking 200 to 300 million blockbuster the studios could disperse the risk and make 3 movies. This would also allow them to break the fucking sequel/prequel/franchise cycle that is killing creativity.

the problem in my eyes with the creator is if you are already into sci-fi films and books a lot of the ideas and visuals in the creator can be traced back to something else I had already seen or read about without actually expanding upon those said ideas. Give us the extended cut because there is so much more depth that could have been added to this film that it seriously lacked given the quality of the visuals as well as the depth of the themes it covers.

Not a perfect movie but was engaged the entire time. Visuals definitely great, almost worth it for that alone. It also had one of the most random laugh out loud moments I've had (the dog scene). I liked some of the interesting things done around death and it feels like it has more consequences here vs the "no one's ever really gone" crap of late. Unfortunately not sure if it will have the box office draw to make this type of film more appealing to studios, hope I'm wrong.

Really refreshing movie, like you said not a franchise, or a sequel etc. I loved how it gave vietnam war vibes, with the search and destroy esque missions, traumatising the locals and bombing the fuck out of everything. The story and world building was awesome and i do wish it was roughly 30 mins longer. The designs and cgi was purely incredible, the nomad strikes all looked unreal, to the point it look real. The scene with the brain scan was so creepy, really had a good scifi twist. Some actually good humor and bonding with alfie and john, plus decent comedy throughout, the dog scene, the running bombs etc. It really gave me chappie/district 9 vibes with its cgi and design, which is a good thing as i fucking love neil blonkamps aesthetic who also makes amazing looking films on a low budget. As for the ending its perfect, actually had quite an emotional thud for an action film. Overall id give it like an 8 or 8.5, just needed a little more fleshing out and maybe a little more time, very enjoyable film.

see, I was getting ready to be all like, "MMnnnrgh, see, I dunno if I liked how this movie was in a terrible rush at times, and felt like final movie of a 2 or 3 parter, but I forgot that Edwards kinda had his last great effort fucked with too. I don't regret seeing it, maybe I'm just on your side; I want a bit more movie to give the story a bit more room to breathe. Other than that, excellent stuff all around. The visuals of NOMAD's sighting reticle moving over the landscape, and the heavy thudding footfalls of those Sprinting Bombs had me legit scared if it were something to experience in real life. Loved Mifune's armor too, nice touch~

I knew this movie wouldn't disappoint, as I understood Edward's vision immediately after watching Rogue One, and couldn't wait to see the product of his ideas without studio interference. This said, I'm one of those that wishes for an asteroid to take us out of our misery considering how the world is falling apart, but as of right now I hope the universe is gonna allow us another couple of Edward's movies before erasing us.

Always feel skeptical seeing any new sci-fi movie because… you know lol. Might actually go see it. Doing the lords work mate. Also thinking of what Rogue One could have been always makes me sad because it’s pretty cool as it is but it could have been great. Appreciate the frequent uploads!

Saw it last night. Its not the perfect movie but felt a lot more refreshing to watch a new scifi film. Yes it has similar ideas to Star Wars but it was still a lot of fun to watch. Glad that this is a one off film from Edwards and hope to watch more movies coming from him.

I enjoyed The Creator. Sure it had a few holes and mistakes here and there, but just a really good, beautiful, thoughtful movie. And just as importantly: It's not a freakin' sequel/prequel/reboot but an _original_ setting! Imagine that.

Thanks for the review Robothead. While you might shit on some stuff I watch, I appreciate the dissection and honesty. I plan on watching The Creator and I had no idea it was a Midbudget film. I am not sure if you have seen Andor, but I would reccomend that series even if you are not interested in seeing "Modern Star Wars". I don't think I would blame everything on Tony Gilroy as he has crafted an interesting Sci-Fi series there.

Oh totally!!! It made zero sense! Why didn't Nomad just nuked the research base? Why didn't New Asia include Korea and China? Why didn't the God Child do anything useful the entire movie?! Why did Ai simulants have no built in weaponry? Why is there a big hole in the head of simulants? Why do you need to "donate your likeness" to Simulants, Ai can just make a bunch of random generated faces? Why is New Asia still look like Vietnam 1970 although they harbor and work with Ai? The entire movie was a disappointment besides the visual and music by Zimmer.
@sunso1991
@sunso1991 6 месяцев назад
And biggest question. Why did Ai NEED A PHYSICAL BODY? they could be cloud based and activate robotic frames when needed. How come the research bar had no security Ai which can detect intruders and operate gun turrets or weaponized drones?

Dunno. ‘The Animatrix: Children Of Men: Ghost In The AI Bugaloo: District Elysium’ doesn’t inspire me to go and see it. Without spoiling anything it is a film that is cheaply manipulative and doesn’t delve into the dangers of AI that ‘Wargames’ or ‘The Terminator’ does. It’s pretty shallow and goes nowhere, if it were a comic film Ryan Kinnel would be spinning on his broomstick about how much it sucks. But it’s an original property so I guess that’s why everyone loves it.

The very brief scene at 1:08 had me thinking there was some homage to Spielberg's A.I (2001). Maybe he mentions it later but I had to look up that scene in A.I. to find out that it is in fact a scene from A.I. and not The Creators. It's from the scene at the flesh fair.
