He went out to prove it could be done. He used a $4,000 video camera. They went on location instead of using green screen. Most of the time there were only 4-5 crew members! A sound guy, a lighting guy, director of photography and the director. That’s it. They edited and figured out the whole movie and only then did they give it to the CGI effects…that alone probably saved 100 million from the budget because the CGI guys knew exactly what needed to be done and didn’t waste time with shots that weren’t going to end up being in the movie.

@@thedarkemissary I didn't say that it wasn't expensive. That's Korey and Martin. I just thought the film looks expensive, but that's due to the folks who made the film knowing how to use that money correctly. I know it needs to make more than it's budget back to actually be successful.

I'm a cinephile, as I'm sure all us Toasties are at heart regardless of our individual paths; Having said that though, I am a music producer and the exact same principle applies. A lot of music fans have no clue that some of their favorite productions, remixes etc. are done with h some dirt cheap (but solidly performing) pieces of equipment. From what I’ve heard, Garth Edwards shot and edited the Final Cut of the film before having the special effects team work on it. Basically, unlike Marvel and StarWars, the SFX team didn’t have to do extra work that didn’t end up on the screen. There wasn’t a director changing his/her mind about the story of the film after SFX work was already done.

You can't really compare this to a Marvel or DC movie. This is a new property; Gareth Edwards pretty much has control of the whole movie. Marvel and DC movies are interconnected; the story has to link to what is done before and what will come afterward. if he was doing another Star Wars movie, he would have to jump through a bunch of loops to satisfy a bunch of execs. That is where a lot of the reshoot and editing because someone higher up is not happy.

To be fair big budgets still are needed. If films could all go small budget we wouldn’t have one piece live action looking like it did. We’d have one camera static shots and cut up fights. You give special effects and planing time then yes 100 mil looks like 200 mil. Add cheaper actors etc but with that comes difficulty. It’s like expecting all games to be bauldr gate 3 when that took 6 years and tons of feedback and basic things to base it on talented people inspiration etc. some stuff just needs to be made. Not every plot and person has absolute passion just like not all stories can be groundbreaking and unique. Doesn’t mean old jimmy can’t make the horror movie he always wanted due to him not having perfect movie sense and keeping a low budget and so on. Anyway the cost is mostly reshoots and actors and paying for locations. Lord of the rings looked like 300 mil but was also around 100. They got tax breaks etc.

The timing for this review was too dang perfect after the news of the Writers Strike being over and how they were able to figure out that whole issue of the usage of AI.

The movie is like perfect timing because a major part of the film is about grappling with AI and it has a more mature, nuanced take on it, not really focused on determining if AI is good or bad but on the responsibility of humans in regards to legacy and what we create and what we leave behind.

It feels like a lot of other stories because its' a hero's journey-whether you're in Pandora, the Aegean Sea in Homer's Odyssey, or a dystopian city in Bladerunner. The themes are as ancient as storytelling itself regardless of the backdrop. Peace and love, ya'll ~

I’m still going to check it out, but I’m keeping my expectations in check. Because I knew when like early reactions came out saying “It’s one of the best sci-fi films of the recent years.”, I had a feeling they were overhyping it, especially after hearing other reviews that seem more mixed.

John David Washington was so bad in Tenet he pretty much ruined it for me. I agree with Martin, he’s just not a leading man, no matter how much Hollywood pushes him.

It looks great cause its Lucasfilm VFX, and it really does look great. Movie is kinda mid tho IMO. Lots of themes that don't really feel fleshed out. Wish they just picked one and ran with it. Ambitious more than anything.

I really want to see this movie now! The plot sorta reminds me of this older animated series, Exosquad. The series was about a race of genetically engineered clones who got tired of being treated as slaves. Spoiler alert... the clones revolted. As a kid's show it was very heavy and dark. Some of my favorite characters were killed and never returned. The show worked well for me in displaying the struggles, hopes and motivations of the "enemy."

Dune is ALSO a story about AI. Most people dont know that because both theaterical versions never touched upon that. The genre it is is CYBERPUNK, which is why it has the asian stuff. Cyberpunk is distinctly an East Asian genre

I give it a C- 1. Too much fightings, blowing up stuffs, too much action. 2. Tried too hard to make it into a love story. 3. The world doesn't need anymore movies with black/ white dating an Asian woman. Why not an Asian man dating white/black woman ?

I had a chance to meet him at one of my gigs, one of my jobs I work on the fringes of the film industry. I think he hasn't had that huge "hit" yet. Tenet was supposed to be the one that shot him into the stratosphere, but it didn't quite land. He did well in Amsterdam and I'm looking forward to this film and Piano Lessons(oscar bait movie). He might never be a star, but he will most likely be a "working actor" like Anthony Mackie.

When you look at this film and compare it to 350+ million for FAXT-X, 300+ million for Indiana Jones IV, and you look at these VFX artist first directors like Niel Bolmkamp D9 at 40 million, Gareth Edwards The Creator at 80 million you really gotta ask yourself of the MASSIVE waste when the 80/40 million dollar movies looks way better than 300 million dollar go for broke movies.
