KANDY, SRI LANKA: We're in Kandy, one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka. Kandy is the home of the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world and it was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988 however, we're not looking for relics or temples today, we're searching for an authentic local experience. We meet the most entertaining TukTuk driver in Kandy, possibly in all of Sri Lanka - he's a part time cricket commentator and full time entertainer.

in kandy there is a tuktuk mafia. If you are an honest uber or pikme driver in kandy you are in bad luck. Regular tuk tuk thugs don't like pickme or uber drivers because they dont rip off people what says in the app is what you pay unlike regular tuk tuk thugs who will charge what ever they feel like. They will even physically attack pickme or uber drivers if they spotteded picking up riders. So always use pickme or uber. dont give money to regular tuk tuk thugs. dont believe me, ask about this from any seasoned pickme or uber driver in kandy town. railway station is a no go zone for uber and pickme. unfortunately there are very few good tuk tuk drivers in kandy.

Yea I’ve heard about this in some other places too. This was also the case actually when I was in Goa, India as well. I can absolutely understand the frustration of local drivers when Uber is so attractive to customers but really, they ought to ask why it is and how can we compete with that. For me, I actually don’t use Uber that much but I do check the rate of a journey on there before approaching drivers. Often the drivers are asking inordinate amounts and for some people, haggling and battling for the correct price is an uncomfortable experience. Everyone has to put food on their families plate, but there’s a fine line between fighting for the best price and plainly ripping people off. I see a lot of arguments from locals in particular saying foreigners can afford more so should pay more, but nobody anywhere likes to feel cheated and so for, when I get a driver who straight out of the blocks is honest and humble and provides a fair price, I ALWAYS pay more, but when I’m plainly being ripped off it’s not happening

@@TheWanderLife foreigners should not have to pay more unless for the government mandated places and services. most tuk tuk drivers looks innocent but remember looks can be deceiving. actually about 60% of the tuk tuk drivers are a burden to sri lanka. most of them are youth who are capable of many things wasting their lives driving a tuk tuk. most of them die as a tuktuk driver at the end. real shame.

Unfortunately as a British person, particularly one that loves to travel to countries that have been impacted by other countries imperialism, I’m more than aware of the damage done. I can’t atone for things done in the past by other people, but what I can do is try to show people that not everyone from my little island is a looting, punishing, devilish person. I really do take it as my responsibility to smile and be kind. Past damage is done and is still relevant in the way that many countries are still struggling and trying to escape from their pasts, but all I can do is be a good person myself.

@@TheWanderLife I was making a joke, We cannot say British are evil due to colonization, it was differnt time and different conditions. Even most people of sri lanka are descended from indian colonist who came to this island 2500yrs ago and nearly made local aboriginal tribes go exticnt( historty is history ).
