I got a lot of requests for covering videos like these, and the effect they may have in pushing people rightward. I wanted to do more than point out boring or lazy readings of movies and TV shows, and luckily I happened to be watching Battlestar Galactica while working on this video, which helped me get to some cool stuff in the second half of the video.
Also, since I imagine people might be curious about what I thought about Battlestar, I really enjoyed it.
Thanks to ‪@JessieGender1‬ for some help with research on some of the Star Trek stuff.

thinking about one piece as a conservative work is as bad as thinking it like a progressive/woke work just because there's some trans there and there. one piece is just a good adventure manga/anime about adventures with almost nonexistent political messages and that's it. we may start to recognize this, so we may avoid another progressive fans meltdown against oda calling him transph*obic just because he ended up not recognizing Yamato as a man just because she refers herself as such, ignoring the reason as to why she considers herself as such (yeah, that actually happened).

CDs comments at 26:55 is absolutely bonkers to me. The idea that you can’t relate to character because they don’t act like someone you know is crazy. I don’t know anyone who actually acts like, let’s say, Spike from Cowboy Bebop. But that’s exactly why he’s an interesting character! He’s a strange self destructive guy, but he’s well written and three dimensional. Obviously characters need to be relatable in some sense yes, but if every character acts like someone you know they’ll never surprise you. What a boring way to see media.

His real point is that men aren't being what they 'SHOULD' be, y'know, everything that your typical reactionary macho patriarch misandrist fetishize about men. They can't cry, have to be stoic, tough everything out, be violent and aggressive, fuck many women as they can etc.
@braintrust12
@braintrust12 2 месяца назад
wow really?! that’s a legit insane take to me. i thought Spike was incredibly relatable. his confidence, his terrible win-loss record when it comes to bountyhunting, leaving old food in the fridge, getting annoyed with your coworkers, feeling stuck, feeling bored, feeling self destructive… basically everything about Spike and everything he has to endure is something I’ve seen men in real life deal with. More often than not, the “men” is me. Seemed like a based take by drinker to me: if the characters behave in ways that are counter intuitive to the experiences and expectations of the audience, then the audience will be detached. In the end you can have your “surprise” and “subverted expectations,” but no one will care because they couldn’t relate to the character.
@Gvjrapiro
@Gvjrapiro Месяц назад
@@braintrust12 That's just not really how audiences have been shown to react, though. Like some people might relate to specific aspects of a character, and some people might not, but the notion that people get "detached" when a character doesn't act like the viewer or something the viewer has directly experienced.. As a recent example, Lucy from the new fallout show has some relatable qualities, but also starts off the series being pretty fundamentally detached from the average viewer. She's sheltered, peppy, and naive. Besides that, she belongs to a vastly different culture. But when we as viewers see that different culture, when we see her talk openly about something as bizarre as casually sleeping with your cousin (jesus) the audience doesn't just check out because they can't relate, they use that difference as a point of humor, as a bit of a look into the setting, and as a point of comparison we can use as she grows and comes into contact with others. This isn't some new "subvert expectation" fad, people just generally don't need a laundry list of "x is like me, I need to relate x to my life" to find a character interesting or fun.
@braintrust12
@braintrust12 Месяц назад
@@Gvjrapiro i think you’re missing the point. It’s not that the audience “checks out” when they can’t relate to the protagonist. on the contrary, the audience can’t get invested in the protagonist’s struggle to victory when the protagonist is unrelateable - therefore, there is no drama. That’s screenwriting 101. There’s a reason the protagonist in literally every critically acclaimed movie is relatable and doesn’t want to screw their cousin. case in point: it’s relatable to the audience when marty mcfly becomes panicked and disgusted when his mom starts flirting with him. everybody in the audience agrees it’s disgusting to flirt with your mom. therefore, marty mcfly - an all time great protagonist. Maybe there’s a reason he’s marty mcfly and there’s a reason Lucy from the new fallout tv show is “lucy from the new fallout tv show.” Also you’re vastly overestimating how many characteristics the protagonist needs to share with the audience. It’s not a “laundry list,” it’s like 2 or 3 things: the protagonist is 1. down on their luck 2. pure of heart/intent 3. has an ambition or some kind of goal in the face of adversity. That’s it. Luke Skywalker, indiana jones, harry potter, spiderman, ripley, forrest gump. There’s a reason all those characters are written with those same 3 qualifying characteristics and considered all time great protagonists.

Critical drinker lost me with his across the spiderverse review. He praises the movie for like 99% of the video then suddenly drops the whole “Peter is being humiliated and undermined in order to make miles look better” shit. Despite the fact that Peter being a dorky father of his daughter with Mary Jane is basically fan service for Spider-Man fans. Also completely ignores the fact that Peter is clearly still a badass since he was the only one who was able to catch up with miles (besides Miguel) and has a whole ass convo with him. It truly felt like he just needed to find something “woke” to complain about to satisfy his fans.
@ForsakenKrios

I’ve never liked him, but out of curiosity I watched his Andor review because I figured he would find a way to complain about it, despite the show being, ostensibly, the antidote to the criticism of generic corporate slop they hide behind as a critique. Lo and behold, he spends the review praising it, then randomly goes on a tangent about how woke it was but you could ignore those aspects. The wokeness? The lesbian characters. Whose sexuality is secondary, hell even tertiary, to their characters and role in the story. And the fact that they had a committed, but strained, relationship underneath everything that he had to complain about it offhandedly. Out of obligation to his business model? His “deeply” held reactionary beliefs? So frustrating countless people eat this up.

If you take the battle of Stamford bridge, famous for the viking warrior who held a bridge against the pursuing victorious anglo-saxons while his own army retreats in defeat - the guy was huge with matching strength (ended by being stabbed by a spear from beneath the wooden bridge) - this is believable not just because it actually happened, but because the guy had the stature, skill and location to make it possible. If you remove both the stature and the capability then it becomes 'fantasy', size matters, skill is important but is not a panacea. Criticals', and others, point is that the women shown usually lacks the stature (sometimes the skills too, why editing it vital, but even good editing cannot disguise a lack of it) - Kill Bill, both films, are realistic in their portrayal, if subject to artistic licence, most so called 'mary sue' types are lacking, in obvious ways, realistic requirements and portrayals. eg Galadriel escaping from prison in amazons Rings of Power. There are lots of good examples of 'strong female warrior' types that are not lambasted, because they are 'realistic' rather than 'complete fantasy' types. Authenticity and realism matter, they separate actual stories from puff pieces.

I will say the live action Mulan accidentally changes the message to "women can are just as good as men and can be heroes if they get the chance" to "special women with superior genes and abnormal psychical ability can compete with and outdo men" I don't understand why they had to put the chi thing in because it feels more like a way of justifying her talent when the entire point is that women don't need to be special to be as good as men. That's why in the original she's just a regular girl with no special gifts. You might say she's smarter than the men but I read that as her simply rejecting toxic masculinity and it's obsession with strength over wit. The men can be just as clever as her if they reject their gender roles and stereotypes, which is how they buy Mulan enough time to save the day when they decide to put on drag(a very literally breaking of gender expectations).

The thing I dislike the most about Drinker's take is that he sometimes gets extremely close to a good critique of a movie or tv show, only to then fall back to a conservatives perspective. Take Mulan: I agree with Drinker that her having "a lot of chi" in the live action adaptation was not a good idea. The cartoon did not have this "predestination" angle and Mulan was just a regular young woman. She was smart and resourceful, she had a strong sense of self-sacrifice, but there was no "inherent supernatural quality" with her - aside for a magical companion in Mushu, but he was not the key to her rise as a character and he mostly served as comedic relief. I believe this is a valid critique to the live action movie and a good reason to consider the original animated movie as more inspiring: every girl could look up to Mulan and be inspired by her determination and resourcefulness. But instead of pointing this out and maybe diving a little deeper, Drinker goes on a tirade about his idea of a girl boss and how woke culture is destroying media and how men are all inferior to Mulan... Like, you almost made a very valid observation, there!

Movies like The Bourne Series, James bond, Mission impossible, John wick, etc, feature lengthy hand to hand combat scenes where even the 1v1 man on man combat scenes have both characters persevering through fight ending, crippling injuries, with inhuman endurance; as well as remarkably quick recovery time after the fight scene is concluded.

For those of you trying to counter me on this, almost none of your responses are actually worthwhile to me. All of them miss the point, and none of them actually counter what I've said. The fact is that the criticisms of other female heros he's presented to us are not levied consistently. Many of the things he dislikes about other female heros applies to the female heros he likes. So let's go through some of this. The reason why he doesn't dislike Mulan, is because of nostalgia. Bear with me, cause I am terrible with names. 1) Mulan manages to defeat her teacher during be a man. Sure, she has trained for it, but in another analysis CD essentially claimed that a woman would not be able to out-compete a man like this, even with training. Yet, with Mulan it's OK. 2) when Mulan disarms the bad guy, sorry, I cannot remember his name, it's seen as being due to her ingenuity. But disarming a seasoned sword fighter with a folding fan would take a ridiculous amount of strength. Something which would be caught and talked about if the movie came out today. 3) if we are willing to accept Mulan being so competent due to training, have you ever considered the fact that Captain Marvel was trained by both the US and Kree militaries? 4) why is fighting with ingenuity over raw physical strength bad when Captain Marval does it, but ok when Mulan does it? Captain Marval couldn't beat her main male rival in a competition of strength and hand to hand combat. She only ever beat him by using her powers. She recognized at the end that she could only beat him using her own skills rather than fighting on his terms. Not to worry though, I don't expect anyone to actually listen to what I'm saying here. It's just gonna continue with the whataboutisms, and other such deflections. I'll admit that ingenuity isn't really the correct term. Sure enough. But the fact of the matter is that she realized she couldn't take him without using her powers. She had spent the whole movie thinking she had to be able to handle him with raw physical strength, in hand to hand combat. It was a major blow to her sense of self worth. And the story was about overcoming that. By ingenuity, I meant that she fought within her means, using the tools she had that he lacked, instead of letting others dictate how she should go about the fight. The struggle of earning her power is irrelevant here for two reasons. 1) CD has already made claims that women cannot compete with men, even with training. This can be seen in the video we are commenting on. 2) It's still not being applied consistently. Plenty of characters got their power without any struggle or sacrifice. Captain America saw Steve undergoing training, sure. But he saw no advancement from the training. His only shining moments before getting the serum was that bit with the flag and the moment with the grenade. Both of these stem from previously established character traits and did not come about due to training. He had no physical attributes, or combat skill after training. That was all the serum. Superman has powers cause he landed on a planet with a yellow sun. Spider man got bit by a spider. Now, you could make an argument that sacrifice/struggle came about anyway. After all, each of the characters mentioned above had something to lose, and/or lost something after gaining powers. Think uncle Ben, for example. But different characters have different struggles. Carol Danvers is the most powerful character in her movie, as we can both agree. But is the conflict she was dealing with one that could be dealt with through raw power alone? Not a chance. Most of the film saw her against her own emotions and self worth, or against a foe that could be anyone. Her view on the conflict at hand in her movie was a primary struggle. One that is not easy to deal with. It's not an easy feat to look at your core fundamental beliefs and change your mind, after all.

The real problem in movies is underestimating how much training and strength matters. It does not matter your gender, if you go up against someone who is much bigger than you and / or is better trained, you are screwed. You need both the muscle and the training. And yes, women in general are going in at a massive disadvantage when it comes to hand to hand combat, they can get the training, but even unprofessional, but trained men will outperform top female athletes in sports or combat (a bit less true in cardio or skill based sports). Of course, as you mentioned, thugs or untrained people will still naturally lose, given they have no idea what they are doing.

More over, weaponry usually evens the playing field dramatically, since it doesn't matter how much muscle mass you have if she can just slit your throat or shoot you. @@ratbaby3107 Him complaining that the Netflix show made Cowboy Bebop's characters "more grounded and realistic" just proves that to me. Most of the characters felt so much more cartoon-y in live-action. The live-action show's tone leaned very heavily on comedy, and most of the plot points and character beats that they directly lifted from the anime came off as more absurd and exaggerated. Not saying that the anime didn't also have comedy, but the anime felt like it gave itself more permission to realistically breathe and contemplate while the live-action version felt like it had more pressure to keep throwing zany jokes and action scenes at its audience. To me, live-action Cowboy Bebop felt like a bunch of distilled stereotypes about what Westerners assume anime is "supposed" to be like, i.e. quirky and action-heavy, with minimal interrogation about what makes an individual anime like Cowboy Bebop distinct and special. Critical Drinker seems to be a victim of assuming those stereotypes himself.

Or a woman soaking up punch on her face directly, of a dude who is atleast double in mass, and still doesnt show any scratch or sign of slowdown, looks plausible or not. Woman can beat man, but it has to be tactical. Taking advantage of sorrundings, like Jackie Chan/Jet Li used to beat bulkier thugs. Plus take any sport, woman teams/players usually arent comparable to their male counterparts. Lawn Tennis for example. Exceptions are always there, but there is a reason those examples are anomaly.

Because saying this is hilarious seeing how I recall Faye (from Cowboy Bebop) only ever fighting in all of ONE episode which she lost no less then proceeded to get restrained by the male characters. Pretty much every other fight in that show was done by Spike (the male lead) from what I remember. One Piece on the otherhand I recall pirate captain Alvida taking over a pirate ship and whopping a bunch of male characters as well as having her entirely male crew (from what I recall) being completely scared and subservient to her. Then there's Nami beating up a bunch of marine cadets. She even beats a dude whose outfit she stole twice. As well as beating various of Buggy's sidekicks. Zorro got knocked out by one of Kuro's female crew members and lost and gets humiliated every time he tries to fight his female friend Kuina. So it's ironic Drunk idiot is claiming this when the male characters actually lost more fights and got humiliated to a worse degree by the female characters in One Piece live action than Cowboy Bebop live action.

Yet, because most modern movies (good and bad) tend to have many different types of people, he can act like there's some ideological fault causing this. And if the movie is actually good or clever, he can just misread it or take scenes where "a white man is put in his place" and say that's the movie. It's such a miserable way to live. He gets mad at "modern movies" for not having pure evil bad guys and "always giving them sob stories" but then complains when nazi characters are villains without sympathetic traits. He talks about how its a good thing that James Bond is unrealistic because it's a power fantasy but women being strong is bad because it's unrealistic. He has no concrete views or beliefs, he'll make any argument to defend right wing values even if those arguments go against other arguments he's made

They dont actually contradict themselves if you understand hes just a sexist. Women arent allowed power fantasy because they are women, men require it. 0 contradictions here in his mind. Hed decry realistically strong women too. hes the kinda guy to mock a top female weighlifter even tho shes stronger than 99% of men because he thinks shes doing something wrong because shes a woman I remember once having a conversation of this type with a dude of this ilk on quora about women in medieval fights etc, he baseically went "ok enjoy yout 6 feet tall buff amazons, but most women arent like that". And i was like "but were talking on the context of joining an army, do you not think its more likely that the physically gifted would join? Is vikings or the last kingdom full of 1.78 tall lanky dudes or fat men who get wheezy after a stroll? It doesnt make sense

I remember in the span of two weeks, he was complaining that Hollywood was making remakes (he was moaning about Highlander), then in another video complaining Hollywood isn't making enough remakes like the The Mummy 1999 film because "fun isn't allowed anymore". If there ever was someone guilty of fun policing Hollywood films, he even conveniently failed to mention The Mummy 1999 was a remake to push his narrative.

@rokkarokka120 Do you think these interests are biologically innate or taught? Do you think men are genetically predisposed to like cars and sports, and that women have a genetic drive to enjoy spa days? Or is it more that boys are taught that certain interests (ballet, poetry, sewing) aren’t “for men” and therefore are wrong for the them to participate in under threat of communal ridicule and emasculation and likewise for girls?

I always find it funny when these people say "modern movies are never good" and then when a good one comes out they say "this is the first good movie in years" and then completely ignore it's existence after 2 weeks so they can pretend the next one is the first good one in years Edit: check the replies if you need your daily "stupid argument from someone with awful film taste" fix

Yup. If they lived before the 21st century, they would say the same thing. They’re blinded by nostalgia. Just like how I’ve seen the over hate towards minimalistic art (which I do like it), in the 2030s and 2040s people will say it’s nostalgic just because it’s 2010s. Probably in the 80s people say they hate movies and hate Memphis design.

I was actually thinking about Zoro's origins when drinker was talking about the strong males part. In fact a lot of the gags of One Piece is that Nami and the other women regularly kick Luffy's ass. Zoro's entire origin is that a girl kept beating him up and he wanted to get stronger than her. Nami's entire being is to outsmart and outwit 95% of the cast when she's on screen. Drinker's point to make light on how the girls are girls girls and the men are men's men is inherently wrong 🤷🏿‍♂️

It’s even weirder considering One Piece is full of political messages. There’s literally a trans character (Ivankov), and a man who can change your gender using a disease. It pisses me off to no end.
