In the Eocene Epoch, there was a reptile that had teeth equipped for biting through flesh, its hind legs were a lot longer than its front legs and instead of claws, its toes were each capped with hooves. How did this living nightmare come to evolve?

Fascinating even when they are terrifying. We need more paleontology. Seriously, all that is known often seems to come from the US, more recent China, and Germany. Some older Russian works. Same sources. If they were in Germany and in Western US, then they would likely have lived anywhere in between too, and formed other adaptations maybe. It is such a fascinating topic. When I look at drawings of other crocodilians, like that Kaprosuchus, then the "two legs" thing does not seem too crazy. Although I would think that strong hind legs would be essential: the bigger the weight, the bigger the legs supporting it. If it is agile then even more so. Imagine this beast, now imagine this beast sprinting and jumping and leaping around. Needs good strong legs.
