This was my first go-to surround demo with the laserdisc back in the pro-logic days. The scene where the cop and the girl are sitting at the hot dog stand and the bad guys speed off out of frame, it has always sounded like it's coming from way outside the right channel.

the jump from vhs to 4k is obviously astronomical and totally like watching this incredible movie for the first time even tho its been the millionth : D

This movie brings back memories of my teenage years just like Shane. My favorite RU-vidr and my favorite movie... It was a video that made me scream when I saw it. I have VHS, VCD, DVD, and Blu-Ray copies of this movie, and now I've ordered a 4K Blu-Ray copy too.

The Crow is on Paramount+ in 4K. The image quality is an noticable upgrade from the 1080P. I can't wait to see how it looks on physical.

R.I.P. Brandon Lee! Too bad it didn’t get the Atmos treatment, but I get it. Possibly a future anniversary release will get the full remastered treatment if this 4K transfer sells well. 🤞

Just watched the 4k blu-ray last night and it's definitely an improvement in picture quality over the 1080p blu-ray. The picture is way sharper...looks like a movie that was made this year.

Recieved the blue steelbook today and just finished watching it, i think the PQ is stunning and I'm very pleased with how this turned out, if you're a fan of the crow i think you'll be pleasantly suprised. Something I've not seen anyone mention yet, I think the 4k actually improves a lot of the special effects used throughout the movie, the crow flying through the city looked especially good with the colours blending so much better it really helped bring back the illusion.

Shane, perhaps I will do the same kind setup and use similar equipment when I watch 'The Crow' on 4k like this someday. The dts-hd 5.1 from the blu-ray I thought was kind of stuff a few years ago when that came out. but the dts 5.1 from the collector's series release had some serious punch (...for a DVD release back in the early 2000s). But still can't wait to check this out on 4k blu-ray along with the new special features. Once again, thanks for the review, Shane!...and thanks for sharing your story about seeing the movie back in 1994. I was 9 when I saw this on vhs and I revisited later when I was 12. And I was cracking up on your comment about the look of the rooms and city from the movie.

and if I did a new mix for "the crow" I would've done dts: x surround and NOT dolby atmos. Something like Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Trilogy" in getting a dolby atmos mix (which never happened) with isolated soundtrack option I would have done for a movie (s) like that.

i meant to say the dts hd from the blu-ray that came out a few years ago was a kind soft mix compared to the dts from the dvd collector's series. my bad about the misspelling.

It's easy with ever-developing technology to overlook that these are still great sound mixes. Most people don't have surround sound kit and will be using a sound bar at best.

This is great great GREAT news!! I had the 4:3 UK VHS. My later 4:3 UK DVD came complete with video drop out from its obvious analogue video tape source, which was almost certainly the same PAL broadcast tape source as the VHS. I've never seen this film in decent quality before. Even a poor quality 4K would have been a massive step up. To hear that this is a decent, even if not great release, is music to my ears. I've got this on pre-order and this tells me I won't need to cancel it!! Now for Tim Pope's sequel to get a director's cut 4K release and the TV show to get Blu-ray release!! 👍👍

I saw it 12 times on the big screen in 1994....yeah, I went all in on this film lol. I have two different types of 4k steelbooks coming tomorrow, so yes, I am still a bit of an OTT fan.

So how are you feeling about having a 16x9 screen, Shane? I recently switched from scope to 16x9 and I absolutely love it, and wish I had done it sooner, for movies like The Crow that are in 1.85:1 or have alternating aspec ratios.

I think it’s funny you mentioned the laser disk, as the laser disk also has a DTS 5.1 track, I haven’t heard the new one yet but I’ll say one thing, the species DTS track sounds way better on laser disk than it does on their new 4K UHD transfer, for some reason it has a lot of low Rez in the vocal tracks kind of like a light water gurgling sound. You would have to really pay attention to hear it, but if you went back-and-forth between the laser, T and the 4K it is a huge difference in quality. Now I am tempted to get the crew on laser disk myself because of this. 4:40

Ugh, I was hoping for remastered audio because I really HATE how they mixed the audio during the shootout making the sound effects too loud and almost completely drowning out the song that plays during the shootout. Honestly it sounded much better on my Hi-Fi VHS at the time lol.

Great review, and the picture quality looks a big step up whilst retaining the look of film. Someone should send this to James Cameron so he can see how remastering should be done! 😅
