Estimated 1.6 million people in that crowd. It was the first metal concert allowed after the fall of the Soviet Union, and it was free. The military was security and they had no clue what to expect. They beat up a lot of folks in the crowd.

@@theidajawho You're on the right track it is Metal. However, you need to clarify your statement a bit more my friend. Because the bands known as the founding fathers & "Big 3 of Heavy Metal" are "Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin & Deep Purple." Yet, the bands you're talking about "Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax & Megadeth" are AKA as the "Big 4" but more specifically known as the "Big 4 of THRASH Metal" not just Metal, capisce? THRASH Metal is a subgenre in Heavy Metal music that came long after Heavy Metal music was born & created. Again you weren't completely off base, but you just need to Google the history of Heavy Metal & read up yourself for a clearer understanding how it all went down, ya dig? \m/(*.*)\m/ +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul+

The Soviet Union collapsed in December 26, 1991. The concert by Metallica was held in Moscow in September of 1991 just a few months before the Soviet Union's collapse. The concert was part of "The Monsters of Rock' festival. There were other bands there such as AC/DC and Pantera this concert is considered one of the largest rock concerts in history. With an attendance of 1.6 million people. Here's another band to give a listen if interested "The Who - Baba O'Riley (Shepperton Studios / 1978)" The Who was a very influential band when it comes to rock n roll music.

From what I've read in other reaction notes, the big towerish building in the back is speakers. My so listened to Metallica, Tenacious D, and Classical music like Vivaldi. I learned a lot of shall we say different types of music through two teens. Daughter was into Marilyn Manson, Salt N Peppa, Insane Clown Posse and more. I grew up with the 70s, Cheap Trick, Styx, Journey, ZZ Top, Kiss and then my dad's music from the 50s, country and blues.

Metallica formed in the mid 80's in Norwalk CA. (just 3 miles from my house) The house where they used live and hang out was demolished (along with many houses) to build a freeway. The Beach Boys house in Hawthorne CA was also demolished for the same reason. I live right next to it. Hop my fence and you end up on that freeway. The singer James Hetfield went to Downey High School in Downey CA. That city is next door to where I live in Paramount CA.

Fun Fact about singer James Hetfield's odd shaped guitar. Its a copy of an iconic guitar made by Gibson (USA) called the Explorer. This one though is made by ESP (Japan) and is a drop dead exact copy...which was illegal (trademark/copyright violations). But ESP, and James, didnt care. ESP told James they would make him any guitar he wanted. He wanted an ALL BLACK "explorer style" shred machine. When Gibson saw this guitar they sued ESP. Gibson won, but only to the extent that ESP could not mass produce this guitar. James got to keep his. A few months after this video Metallica and Guns-N-Roses were touring together. During the show in Montreal, James accidentally stepped into a stage port (shoots sparks and fire into the air) as it ignited 3200 degrees of liquid magnesium. The ESP "Explorer style" guitar took the main blast saving James' life. The guitar was literally incinerated into ashes, but James lived. After that ESP Guitars became legendary and was elevated to a mythical status. To this day ESP Guitars are seen as something magical. The ESP name carries a lot of weight in guitar circles. Their budget line, called ESP LTD, are the best bang for your buck if you are just starting out. Because even though its the budget line, LTDs are part of the ESP family and therefore are also magical by association. lol but true.

Another fact, the military were there to be crowd controllers but pretty much just let that go and just enjoyed the concert themselves. There was 53 deaths and hundreds of injuries in this crowd. Of course many were overdoses. As people generate heat, like many people like this, the helicopter was to circulate air to cool people and most probably to drop water for people aswell. Dont forget in this time Russia wasnt allowed any music, the only music they were able to get was bootlegs from other countries, if you were caught with music youd be thrown in jail or severly beaten. This concert was a gift to people after all of what happened. So of course everyone couldnt wait to see music. They fully lapped it up. They stopped counting people at about 600,000. This concert was heaven to all.

Older Reaction so I hope you see this but if you like hyped rock crowd videos try these: "AC/DC Hells Bells Live at River Plate" and "Korn Woodstock 99 Blind". Or even this same Metallica Concert. "Metallica Live Moscow Creeping Death". The Hells Bells crowd is so into it its like the crowd was practicing before the band got to town and Korn Blind is almost scary in that the build up at the beginning is so big, if you know how the that song starts, you cant help but wonder if Korn is about to insite a riot with a couple hundred thousand people. Korn also has Joey Jordison from Slipnot sitting in on drums. He is an insane drummer.

Story of James' black kite shaped guitar. This saved his life, literally. I think in the late 2000s there was a fault with his amps and leads and it blew up the guitar while he was playing it on stage. The guitar took all the electrical power and exploded into pieces on him. If he had a direct connection to his guitar amp lead James would've been dead. But he has a silver one just like it now. I think they finished the concert at that point, too dangerous and unsure if any other problems.

Not the biggest and they were only one of the bands performing Monsters of Rock, 1991-1.6 million There have been countless large-scale rock festivals throughout history, but none bigger than the Soviet Union’s one-off edition of Monsters of Rock. In 1991, the combination of Metallica, AC/DC , The Black Crowes and many more attracted 1.6 million rockers to Moscow. With that many rock fans in one place, we imagine it must have been rather loud. Rod Stewart, 1994-3.5 million Music legend Rod Stewart holds the current world record for the biggest gig of all time - in 1994, he also performed on Copacabana Beach to to a staggering 3.5 million people celebrating New Year’s Eve. Although 99% of the crowd probably couldn’t see a thing, being part of the world’s biggest concert at New Year must have made for a pretty amazing atmosphere and a night the gig-goers will never forget. Jean Michel Jarre, 1997-3.5 million The king of big gigs is undoubtedly Jean Michel Jarre, performing a grand total of four concerts with an audience of over a million people each. Back in 1979 he set the world record for the biggest gig ever - his performance in Paris attracted a million fans. He then went on to break his own record twice. 1.5 million watched him in Houston in 1986, 2.5 million in Paris in 1990, and an astonishing 3.5 million in Moscow in 1997, equalising Rod Stewart’s world record. No concert since has matched up to that scale, but who knows what’s to come in the future?
