Adam existed before Danny was abused by his stepdad but he’s definitely just one of Danny’s personalities. It seems like Adam was Danny’s way of coping with his father leaving.

Danny is a schizophrenic. Clearly his twin brother was made up. Like an imaginary friend. The poor boy was traumatized, and forced to be home alone frequently because his mom worked 2 jobs. He had no one else but himself, and was bullied in school.

Then again when Marlin found out from his mother. I believe she knew he was abused and she knew about his imaginary friend but didn’t know they coincided and were connected. The mother played along and Marlin called his imaginary friend “bullshit”. Then “Adam” “died” when it ended and Danny eventually moved out. “Johnny” was an imaginary friend. Jack or Adam or the Israeli persona saved Danny from the drug dealer, then again from the home invasion (Israeli “pulled him into the shadows” and emerged). Ariana was fake and her trying to get Danny to shoot Marlin caused confusion when Danny recognized him but didn’t know who he raped (Adam) or why he should die (“Ariana” or “Adam”?). Ariana late night exploits were Danny being a night owl as “Ariana”. “Ariana” loves women and steals them from Danny and kisses a girl in front of the lover in the club because DANNY becomes cold when someone gets close. Danny is confused about his sexuality and puts it off on other personas. He was extremely triggered when the drug dealer made his suggestions because as “Johnny” said, “Danny” doesn’t like guys. Danny has a hard time keeping track of the details so he draws his personas.

another thing that didn’t make sense was when only adam would go see their real father and not both of them, like that part made no sense to me at all

@@johnesin7886 yep. That's how I see it. It's that mother really takes the cake. Cuz she is still talking about Adam 'no longer being with us.' When she knows full well that Adam never existed from the start. She was just in so much denial with men abusing her children and her child making up an imaginary brother just to cope.
