The 1911 break in period is an important part of making sure your pistol is reliable when you need it. Visit my shop: boomsticktacti...
There are some people who oppose carrying a 1911 pistol as their defensive firearm due to the need to break it in. While newer pistols that feature newer technology are very popular among conceal carriers, the 1911 pistol is still a great popular option for a self defense firearm.
Most 1911 manufacturers require a 500 round minimum before the firearm is considered functionally reliable. If a 1911 pistol is your choice for your concealed carry firearm, make sure it will function properly with your defensive ammo before you put it into your carry rotation. Learning that your gun isn't reliable while you're trying to protect yourself is a bad time.

I was a Combat Engineer in the United States Army back when the 1911 still was the Side Arm. I was also my Company's Armorer, I went through the United States Army's Armorer School. Steel frame hand guns want lube, if they are not well lubed they will malfunction. I love a good 1911, it is the only side arm I will trust my life with because I know that weapon inside out. It feels like an extension of my arm, I have friends who love those polymer guns like the Glocks. I hate those guns. I don't like how they feel in my hand, I don't like the way they shoot. I don't like that they do not have a hammer, or a safety. I'm just used to the 1911's

@Charlie B My first side arm was Colt Combat Commander 45ACP I bought in 1979 when I was stationed at Fort Campbell Ky. I now have a Kimber Custom II Stainless Frame, Blued Slide that I bought in 2016 for $800.00. They both have run flawlessly. MOST 1911 malfunctions are due to the lack of lube and shit magazines. I run Wilson Combat 47D's in my Kimber. It go's a long way to polish the Frame feed ramp, the feed ramp in the barrel along with the inside of the barrel hood. Something any one with critical thinking skills and some mechanical aptitude can do. I don't care about who "supposedly" does not lube there Guns. I'm here to tell you steel framed pistols need lubrication. The M16 CRAVES lubrication. I've been around Guns all my life. My father was a Detroit Police officer for 25 years. I was 7 years old when I started shooting, I'm now 63. I would argue sense I did attend and graduate the United States Army's Armorer's school and maintained my Company's Arms Room for three years I know what I'm talking about. If you like your little Glock good for you, more power to ya. If I had a dollar bill for every one who talks shit about 1911's I'd be rich. 1911's served our Armed Force's for a VERY long time. There is NOT a Pistol out there that I would trade my 1911 for. So tell me this genius, if the 1911 is such a peace of shit why is it still a VERY popular pistol? They still sell like hot cakes.

I own 3 Tisas… the A1 has had 1,000s of rounds thro it …. I am a huge fan of these $ cheap pistols. They work,……they work really well. I am extremely knowledgeable on 1911s…. I have built, cheap kits to expensive all Wilson Combat ones…. One thing I have learned is I enjoy buying cheap 19ers and turning them into a good reliable gun……Tisas are my favorite, I have tuned them into a fine match quality racing gun… but I agree with you… put a lil oil on em and run several hundred rounds thro… again… Tisas are a legit gun…. Budget friendly and actually give you a quality handgun..

Wilson Combat mags with the plastic followers prevents the round from nose diving and works great everytime in a new unfired gun. Polishing the feed ramp by hand is very useful. If you have any reliability issues with a 1911 then the first thing is change to Wilson mags......

I always rack the slide of every new pistol I buy at least 1,000 times before I even shoot the first round. That may sound crazy, but it's easier than it sounds. You can rack a slide 50 times in less than a minute. Do that a few times a day, and you'll be at 1,000 before you know it. I then clean it thoroughly and lubricate it. This is not as good for break-in as actually firing ammo, but it does make a very noticeable difference to how smoothly the slide moves, and it seems to settle the recoil spring in too. Talking of the recoil spring, I also store brand new pistols with the slide locked back for the first week or so. It is cycles, not compression that wear a spring, but brand new springs do take an initial 'set' early on in their life cycle. I think storing the pistol with the slide locked back accelerates this process. I also fill the magazine with dummy rounds for the same reason None of the brand new pistols I have bought have ever demonstrated lower reliability during the first few hundred rounds fired, and I attribute it this to my racking/spring compression routine.

I bought a Tisas 1911 B45 duty pistol today. I was so excited, I ran to the range and was terribly disappointed that my brand new 1911 was having chambering issues. I have wanted a 1911 for a while and was considering the expensive brand name models, and even came to terms with the fact that if I was going to own a 1911 it was going to be $1000 or so to get one. Now, after watching the first few minutes of the video I was still disappointed that I would need to fire around 500 rounds to break the gun in, especially with the high cost of ammo, but after watching the video to the end, it all makes sense me and my excitement was renewed. Thanks for the info. I will keep firing 5-6 round mags until the cobra mag I just ordered comes in, that seems to work just fine.

When I was a junior officer in the US Army, I went to Military Police School, and we had extensive training using the 1911A1 and most of us qualified "Expert" with it. I was then assigned to Special Forces in an infantry job. In VN, I was in SF and upon entry into the 5th Group, In addition to an M2 .30 Carbine, I was issued a Colt 1911A1 pistol that was "new" and still had the cosmoline it was packed in at the factory. Before firing it, I thoroughly cleaned it and lubed it before firing it, and using standard issue army magazines with normal ball ammunition, it never malfunctioned. I probably put a couple of thousand rounds through it practicing and teaching others to use it. I carried it on most of my patrols in VN, usually with more than three magazines. Occasionally I carried a Browning 9mm Hi Power, simply because I had one and it was lighter and carried more rounds, but I never felt as comfortable with the 9mm as I did with the .45. For a pistol that must be used with ball ammo (JHP is a no-no in military combat - as it does not comply with the Geneva Convention), it is very hard to beat the stopping power of the ,45 ACP.

Pictured in this video is an SDS Carry 1911. I bought one myself to be my "beater" pistol. I'm a fan of the 1911 platform owning a bunch of them. The quality of my sample was pretty questionable. Initially, it would not run through even one magazine without failure, even with Wilson magazines. This is not acceptable. I decided that rather than send it to SDS, I would be the warranty. My example has a stainless slide over a cerakoted receiver. On disassembly, I found the barrel link had been cerakoted (why?) and would only barely move after application of considerable force. So, I drove out the retaining pin and using fine sandpaper, removed all of the cerakote and reassembled the pistol. This helped, but did not solve the problem. On next inspection, I noted the cerakote on the slide rails looked pretty thick. So, I addressed this with very fine sand paper as well, this time being very careful to only smooth the surface out. That, along with a full Wilson spring kit solved the problem. The gun now runs like a top and is sufficiently accurate. I trust it completely and carry it often. My point? Simply this, a properly made 1911 should run fine right out of the box (after a cleaning and proper lube). Ammo is just too expensive to push 100 to 500 rounds through your gun to smooth out what should have been done at the factory. Just my opinion and thanks for the video.

It came in a hard case with a cleaning rod, brush, & barrel lug wrench. The Cerakote finish is flawless as is the fit. And matches my Colt H-bar perfectly. My Taurus Commander in .45 is my go to edc. First thing I did when I got home with it was pour some baby oil in all the critical spaces, cycle it 50 times or so empty and then wipe it out of as much of the mineral oil as possible, then set it in a sunny summer window to "dry" for a day open to the wind. Wiped it out again to get any settled oil off it the next day. Did the same with the new mags that came with it and another 10 new Wilson Combat 10 rd mags that I purchased for my firearm. I then took it out to my range and ran 200 rounds through it in quick succession, stripped it, cleaned it, lightly oiled it again and wiped it off and out. Then I ran another 200 rounds through it quickly and again stripped, cleaned and oiled it. It ran awesomely, not one jam or misfire. It was worth the effort. The weapon has run flawlessly for over 5K rounds with any ammo that I've put through it including +P. No slop, tight tolerances, I love my Commander so much it will likely always be my go to edc.

Great video. I recently got into 1911’s and I’m just surprised at myself especially after all my friends retired police folks, which I’m not, told me the 1911 was obsolete and dangerously slow and risky to carry. I started with other pistols but stumbled onto a Sig Sauer P938 Legion and liked it got a P238 380 both are 1911 (sorta) styled pistols in other calibers. But I found myself liking those features and the look. Recently after a long journey through semiautomatic pistols I purchased my first 1911 a Kimber Ultra Carry II 45ACP Officer and I love that pistol. I accidentally discovered my appreciation for 45ACP when I purchased a Springfield XDE calibers in 45ACP. I was like hmm how much better would it be in 1911 with that grip. Today I purchased a Sig Sauer 1911 Government model in black. A thing of beauty although nothing fancy just a plain Jane model. Can’t wait to shoot it and I love it’s features and feel in the hand. Your video is very helpful as I thought Kimber was unusual with the 500 round break in - great knowing they’re not. I’m look forward to breaking in my Sig Sauer 1911 and I see others in my future. I think 1911s are engineering marvels and a thing of beauty and now my favorite caliber is 45ACP although I have had my eye on several 10mm 1911s. Time will tell as I’m a new shooter but I’ll end by noting how helpful your video is to me as new shooter and especially new to 1911s. I’m excited now about some of the other manufacturers I’ve seen and didn’t know if their 1911s were good. I look forward to exploring. Anyway, I thought you did an excellent job with safety and with providing practical information for 1911 fans new or otherwise.

@@BoomStickTactical I full agree with your assessment of the magazine as the key feature. Also, I took the new Sig 1911 to the range yesterday day and its totally a beast right outta the box. I now know it’s Sig’s 45ACP XO model in Nitron black not as shiny as I thought once I cleaned it up for the range. Very accurate pistol I was getting 3 and 4 inch groups right outta the box. I’m especially pleased with the ergonomics and how it fits my hand and the grip and the serrations front and back make for a solid hand purchase and accurate shooting. Also, the Sig trigger is slightly heavier than my Kimber but it didn’t seem to matter and I didn’t really notice. The most noticeable thing about my Sig is that there have been zero failures to feed right outta the box. I ran 150 rounds of federal Red Box and another 100 Winchester white box and it was totally rock solid. I’m amazed. Also, I used Kimber, Wilson, and Sig mags on purpose and it ran them all like nothing. I’m so impressed I might get another smaller Sig for carry as this one is huge. I’m 6’5’ 215 so I can hide most things with an untucked shirt ….well well enough anyway. I’m just blown away I’m considering carrying a full sized 45ACP smh🤦‍♂️. Last thing I ever thought. Anyway, still appreciating your advice in that video as I’m thinking one reason the Sig might not have had failures to feed is that I cleaned it and lubed it properly before shooting before I see now I really skimped on that treating it more like a polymer pistol and the Sig is all steel weighing in at 41.6 ounces although its so well balanced you hardly notice the extra weight. 😂 I know I will though if I try lugging it around all day as a carry pistol …..even so much as I’m tempted. Keep up the good work and plain talk about 911s there are lots of folks I’m sure like me that you are helping even if they don’t say so. Happy Trails.

Like you I was more drawn to DA/SA action handguns when I finally exercised my 2nd Amendment 4 years ago in initially picking up a full size Beretta PX4 Storm and then a Springfield Armory XD-E in 9mm for my EDC. Two years ago in an end of year sale Pre Covid Pandemic madness I almost pulled the trigger in a XD-E chambered in .45ACP when the thought crossed my mind that perhaps instead I should buy a 1911 Mil-Spec. One thing led to another and I purchased a beauty of a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded in Stainless Steel in .45ACP Absolutely love it!! and one of my favorite handguns apart from my Sig Sauer MK25. Even though in the great deal I got back then it came with 5 Springfield Armory OEM 7 round magazines, I did immediately purchase 3 additional Wilson Combat magazines in 8 & 10 rounds. Each time I hit the range I make certain to cycle through all 8 magazines which I now believe has been working out great as even the Springfield Armory factory magazines have never had a malfunction in the 400 rounds total I have fired so far. Interestingly enough, Springfield Armory makes no mention of any sort of break-in period. Yet, I assume that being a 1911 that is a lot of metal on metal that 300 and perhaps ideally 500 rounds fired will further help smooth everything out even further.

Don't forget that LAPD SWAT and SIS carry 1911s. Th4 FBI HRT and SWAT carries 1911 as well as the US Marshall's Special Operation teams. US Special Forces, including Delts Force, used 1911s and some still do. Delta recently changed to Glock 19s. It is noteworthy that as you go up the ladder of gun experience and operatiosn, the more you find 1911s in their hands. So I think if the 1911 is good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

I use Wison Combat mags mostly for my 1911's,.... but Megar makes great mags & make magazines for most modern pistols today. I've never needed more than 200 rounds to break in any of my 1911's & I own six of them, from the 3" Colt "Defender", an original blued Colt Commander in 9mm, a couple Smith & Wessons, a Scandium commander & a full size target government model, also true blued, a Springfield EMP 3" 9MM, And 2 Kimbers, one "Micro" in .380 & the full size "Raptor" in .45. The 9mm EMP Springfield mags are gun specific, period. I have a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded which came with five OEM 7 round magazines yet I still immediately purchased 3 additional Wilson Combat magazines in 8 & 10 rounds. Each and every time I hit the range I make certain to cycle through all 8 magazines which I now believe after seeing your video has been working out great as even the Springfield Armory factory magazines have never had a malfunction in the 400 rounds total I have fired so far. In addition I have fired some Federal HST jacketed hollow point along the way which I am guessing I might have used the Wilson Combat magazines to do so. So I need to remember to one day try them out with with Springfield Armory OEM magazines just for the heck of it. Mind you, when I have my SA 1911 loaded for defensive purposes with JHP I tend to not take any chances and use the Wilson Combat ones as they are better quality and hold more rounds. Interestingly enough, Springfield Armory makes no mention of any sort of break-in period. Yet, I assume that being a 1911 that is a lot of metal on metal that 300 and perhaps ideally 500 rounds fired will further help smooth everything out even further.

Thanks for sharing and I agree with you. I have been shooting 1911s for a long time and most of mine come from custom shops so they are hand fitted. Hence, they are expected to run on arrival. However, any 1911 or 20ll that I am going to use as an EDC always goes through a 500 round break in period. All guns of this type that have a large metal to metal bearing surface need to wear in the hight points and let the springs set. Also not all mags are the same and guns can be magazine senative as well as ammo sensitive. Personally I like Wilson or Ed Brown mags and have gotten great service out of them. Another important factor is keeping them properly lubed.

I offered him my Wilson Combat magazines to use in a match and offered to buy him an expensive dinner if he had a FTF with my mags. I didn't have to buy him dinner. Only issue with ball rounds is in a crowded area in a self defense situation. The ball ammo can easily over penetrate and possibly strike someone else. See Alex Baldwin as an example. Two people, one bullet. The hollow points mushroom and tend to stay in the body (usually). But that's just something to consider. It's your gun and your life.

I totally agree. Breaking in, and after the pistol is broken in, takes a combination of ammunition, magazine, and pistol working in concert. I have found that not all magazines made for the 1911 will work with any 1911 due to feed lip, spring, and follower differences. I have a 1911 that will run Mec-Gar magazines all day, but Wilson Combat magazines refuse to work, as an example. Once broken in with the correct-for-the-gun ammunition and magazines, the 1911 is as reliable as any pistol on the market. I also consider them as one of the safest pistols to carry where the thinness of the pistol is an added plus. If I did not think so, I would not have carried one for the past 50 years. I'll solve your feeding problem right now. Take that Barrel out get a small piece of thousand grit wet dry sandpaper and then carefully polish the bur out of the feed ramp edge. Do this wet. After take some polishing Rouge and and your Dremel, proceed to polish not only the barrel throat and chamber but also the feed ramp on the frame. You'll never have another hang up again unless you're using inferior quality magazines or ammunition. I personally run only Wilson Combat magazines they are of superior quality and 100% anti-tilt. You can also add an 18 and a half pound recoil spring this will bring the slide home with authority and promote positive chambering, also cushions the slide and frame against excessive battering.

You have eased my mind and I thank you! Bought a Tisas Bantam 1911 45 that came with 2 Check Mate 8 round mags. First thing I noticed was how much resistance there was when inserting the mag into the Tisas with 8 rounds compared to 7 with the slide closed. After 150 rounds I experienced 2 malfunctions on the last round in the mag. I was concerned enough to buy a Glock 22 police trade in (40 S&W) as a replacement. I'm old enough to know you get what you pay for and this video has confirmed that. 2 malfunctions on a $999.00 Tisas and zero malfunctions on $330.00 used Glock. The Bantam 45 and Checkmate mags just needs to be broken in. I should have 500 rounds through it by the end of the week and after watching this video I am relieved about my purchase. The Glock has 1 safety on the trigger while the 1911 has 3 hence my preference for the 1911. THANK YOU!

John M. Browning designed both the 230 grain ball .45 ACP round (Actually ALL the ACP rounds) and the 1911 to work together as a system. It features a controlled round feeding system which is engineered specifically for that 230 grain ball ammo and its specific bullet profile. Even the feed lips of the magazine are designed as part of this system. When you stick to this system as originally designed, there's not a gun you can find that is more reliable at feeding ammo than a 1911 feeding 230 gr. FMJ ammo from USGI spec magazines with the V profile lips. But when you alter ANY part of this system, you have to compensate for those alterations. A different magazine design, different feed lips, even a different follower, will probably be needed if you start using non-ball ammo. My Tisas guns, after a very brief break-in period, are now fully reliable with all round profiles including my defensive ammo choice, which are Federal Hydrashoks. Interestingly they don't even care much about different versions of magazines. Now that they've had a few hundred rounds down them, they feed anything, shoot everything, and extract it all too. They're good to go. I trust them for defensive usage.

I've since run 500+ rounds through my Girsan and have broken it in, especially because it's cerakoted FDE and that cerakote is grippy as all hell on all qualities of shell casings. The firearm now functions properly and will forever be my favorite pistol. I purchased it because it is "a shooters gun" as you said, and it's a hell of a good running gun now! My 1911 experience - many 1911's like a very specific diet. The ogive of the bullet and the angle of the follower in the mag will determine if the round can slide up the feed ramp. I have a Colt Combat Elite that does not like hollow points - even though it has thousands of rounds through it. The bullet's ogive makes the edge of the hollow point catch the feed ramp. But I have several Dan Wessons and a Wilson Combat that will eat anything I put through it. and you can count on Wilson Combat mags. I have many - MANY - 1911 mags from different brands and the Wilson is the one that can always be counted upon no matter who made the pistol.

I shot 200 rounds the first time out and no malfunctions and i cleaned it and it wasn’t especially dirty. Also my Kimber Ulta Carry II manual specifically mentions a 500 round break-in firing 100 rounds at a time which i followed and i had numerous failures to go into battery. Nevertheless, after 500 it started working smoothly with zero failures and both are priced at over $700.00.

There's always that one guy in 1911 video comments that says something like this. Maybe you didn't experience any issues because your gun broke in without issue (even without Sig mentioning a break-in period in the manual). Pretty sure your story would be quite different if you started with JHP. As well, you can run one make/model of JHP and be fine but not all JHP are the same - projectile profile will differ (ogive and length), as well as the size of the hollow point. There's no standard projectile spec. That's not a gun problem. That's an ammo problem.
