CRUISE MISCONCEPTIONS
There are a lot of cruise misconceptions about what it is like cruising right now. So, we aim at these common cruise myths to see which ones are true and which are no longer viable.
The biggest concern here is that cruising is too expensive. Indeed, the cost of travel is up, and cruising is no exception. However, cruises are still about 30% cheaper compared to similar land-based trips.
Likewise, one common cruise myth is individuals will feel trapped on a cruise ship. We have never felt trapped on a cruise ship. Large cruise ships offer plenty of outdoor and quiet spaces to help ease those concerns. Plus, modern cruise ships offer so many activities, amusements, and events that you might even forget you are on a cruise ship.
Likewise, some cruise misconceptions we hear are that cruises are boring. That is certainly not the case in 2024. Today's cruise ships have innovative features, unique public venues, and spaces to enjoy. Sky diving simulators, go-karts, outdoor sports complexes, and even roller coasters are now on cruise ships. Honestly, we often find it challenging to fit everything on the ship into a 7-day cruise plus enjoy the ports of call.
Another knock we often hear is that cruising isn't authentic travel. You can only do a little with barely a day at each destination.
However, the cruise lines have taken this criticism and are creating unique itineraries and tours to give travelers more authentic experiences. Some cruises include multiple stops in one country and overnight stops in popular cities. Cruising is a great way to get introduced to a new place to see if you want to return or if one-and-done is enough for you.
Modern cruise ships also have a host of technological enhancements that minimize the motion of the ocean. Plus, several safety and health precautions to try and mitigate any illnesses. So, cruisers don't have to worry about the potential of getting sick. You're no more likely to get sick on a cruise ship than on land.
Many think that cruising is right for them. Perhaps they believe cruising is for older adults or for families. But there is a cruise ship for everyone in 2024. Whether you travel solo, just a couple, or are in your 30s, 40s, or 20s.
When we tell individuals we sail on cruise ships with 4 to 5 thousand people, they ask if it ever feels crowded. Besides the occasional queueing, which happens anywhere you travel, we never think of the crowds on modern cruise ships.
Whether it is a small vessel or the world's largest cruise ship, all it takes is some simple planning, and you won't have to worry about the thousands of other passengers on board the vessel.

My husband and I took our first cruise in 2003 and well, it wasn’t what either one of us expected. The sea day was the best. After that cruise, we wouldn’t take another cruise until 2011. We had so much fun on that cruise, we’ve been cruising yearly or more ever sense.

I have been cruising since 1993. As far as I am concerned there is TOO much going on a ship. I cannot wait will to 2 or 3 Days at seas so we can relax a bit. We have always booked excursions with the cruise lines since if there is a problem the ship will wait for you. Our tour bus destroyed a wheel and we had to wait for a new on be brought to us. Then there was about an additional half hour late. We got back about an hour late and the ship was STILL waiting for us.

Cruise line excursions are far more expensive BUT the guarantee you won’t get left at port if your group arrives late ( maybe unless you go awol and don’t return to your group after free time ) is exactly why I spend the extra money too that and the cruise line vets all these operators so If something goes wrong you’ve got recourse.

Sea days are incredible….. Never left with nothing to do. For those who follow the adage that the ship is as much the destination as the ports, sea days are pure bliss….

Sea days are my favorite. I need to relax, that's why I go on cruise. Sit on balcony with my tea, a book, and hubby....bliss.

@@migrose6547 Do as much or as little as you like…. That horizon to horizon connection to the ocean is unbeatable.

Sadly Royal Caribbean and Celebrity now have seemed to reach the decision solo travelers are costing them money and now are charging more then a 100% single supplement to discourage solo travelers. I hope this blows up in their faces so other cruise lines do not adopt the same policy.

I’ve noticed. Cruise MSC they usually waive the supplement.

@@lexa_power Exactly, the highest I had on MSC was a 50% supplement on a popular cruise during the busy season. NCL must be licking their chops knowing their solo cabins will be even more in demand now.

Of course you don't "feel trapped" how can you when you're drunk while lounging by the pool like MOST cruisers do. That or your in the casino. Because after that, if your not doing the water, gambling or drinking, that's the MAJORITY of cruising these days. Unless you're on a MEGA ship. Then you may be able to do other things like the race tracks or rope courses or ice skate. etc. But a regular cruise ship, not so much. For example, I was board out of my gourd on DCL after only a couple of days. But those adults who were into drinking were just fine as they had plenty of places to imbibe and those places were BUSY! Plus of course the NUMEROUS and VOLUMINOUS amounts of alcohol served by the pool. The views? IT'S WATER! Seen it once you've seen it all. The ocean looks the same. Waves are the same. Boring! You WON'T get "authentic" anything while visiting a port with ANY cruise line! If only being there for a day. The locals KNOW and treat you as the suckers you are for believing such nonsense. If you go knowing that the locals ONLY see cruisers as a quick buck, then you'll not be disappointed. That's why places like Key West basically kicked out cruisers, because CRUISERS AREN'T WANTED! Except for their MONEY! Venetians HATE cruisers and also are considering a serious restriction, if not an all out ban on large ships. When I lived in Alaska it was the same. locals TOLERATED cruisers and that's all, because they needed the money, especially to get through the rest of the year. Cruising IS good for a "taste" of a place. Even if it's only a superficial one. You almost WILL feel sick on the smaller ships in any sort of weather that the mega ships ride through better. Many of the "specialty places" REQUIRE at least a blazer and collared shirt with slack or at least Khaki pants. Otherwise NO ENTRY! While a few ships have added single rooms, many are penalizing single travelers and ONLY accepting double bookings. So, if you want to go single you PAY DOUBLE! Crowds are ALWAYS a problem on mega ships. Try getting to Guest services or booking items, or anything popular to do. Wait times can rival amusement parks!

Underdressing in the MDR should be shamed and refused. I say this as a traveler who often eats dinner at the buffet rather than change into my dinner clothes and never attends formal night. There are tons of other options, so there is no reason to go to dinner looking like you just got finished mowing your lawn.

If you say that on any cruise related forums on Facebook, they'll gang up on you and tell you to mind your business. When I go to the mdr, I dress nicely. If I don't dress nicely I go to the buffet

I know a person whom always get wow'd by the pics I take on my cruises, but just refuse to try it once because of what she sees from mainstream media regarding incidents like Carnival Triumph, Costa Concordia, Diamond Princess, plus the other negative news about Noro outbreaks and how the media always calls it a floating petri dish. No matter how much you explain to her about it. Funny thing is, she's also the type that distrusts mainstream media about everything else.

Good greif, EVERY media covers the cruise incidents. Also, no one anywhere, in any media, covers negative cruise news more that several of the top RU-vid cruise vloggers. Don, La Lido Loca, ShipLife, ALL do almost nothing but negative news. Chanells like this and Chris Wong are the rarity and frankly a breath of fresh air.
