The Cure might have "happy" melodies but their lyrics were always some kind of dark or at least melancholic. But it is a great band with many great songs. Try A forest, pictures of you, The kiss, Lullaby
Yay!! My favorite song by the Cure. 🥳 Such a great melody. I think you need to react to Adam Ant. Goody Two Shoes or Prince Charming are good ones to start with.
I have not heard much from The Cure, even though I was in high school in the 1980s. But this is, and has been since ~1985, one of my favorite songs of all genres and all time.
The Cure are pure magic! That's how I feel about them, and most fans do as well. I'll give you my personal 5 favorites to hear. This is a band you really should do a marathon listen of, Jayy. 5. Pictures Of You 4. A Forest 3. Grinding Halt 2. 10:15 Saturday Night 1. Fire In Cairo
I like your interpretations. But the way Robert Smith can write a song in the barely noticeable abstract, it’s possible this song could actually be about making a sandwich.
My fav song from them by far. Also try Lovesong, Friday I'm in Love, Love Cats, A Forest, Close to Me, Let's Go to Bed and The Walk. The Cure were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. One of the biggest New Wave and Pop Rock bands of the 80s. They got labeled as Goth because of the lead singer Robert Smith and the dark and depressing lyrics of many of their songs.
Robert is married to his childhood sweetheart, I’ve always held the belief that he writes songs about being alone as it’s something he finds alien and incomprehensible. The experience of having been together with Mary for 48 years this allows him to write with the prospective of something terrifying which gives so many of the cure songs their darkness. “pictures of you” being a prime example
Percy Shelly said, "our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought." In fact, those lines from "Ode to a Skylark," are printed in the jacket of their Wish CD.
Sorry but no, why? It is a beautiful song, one of the most profound; if you want. But not "the" song! And certainly not the one that represents them the most. The cure sound is LET S GO TO BED, PLAY FOR TODAY, PRIMARY, CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES, THE WALK, LOVE CAT, THE CATERPILLAR, JUST LIKE HEAVEN, (IN BETWEEN DAYS too, obviously) .. ..and other great songs from subsequent albums. And among these ok, also lovesong. Which also has the hallmark of the Cure, as they all have. But in my opinion it's not, The song.
Please don't take what I'm about to say as an attack, it's just me stating facts and opinions, while also clarifying to others reading this comment to know what is a fact and what is your opinion. "Love Song" is absolutely not THE Cure song. While it is a good song and might be your favorite, I would argue that it's not even one of the best four songs on the album (which in my opinion are "Pictures of You", "Fascination Street", "Disintegration", and "Same Deep Water As You", not in any particular order; in fact, I've read that Robert Smith was so pleased with the way "Same Deep Water" turned out that it wouldn't have mattered if the rest of the album was a flop). It is also not an iconic song for The Cure; it is in no way shape or form an example of their sound, style, nor evolution. It is also neither their overall most popular song, nor even the most popular song from the album (I would assume that to be "Pictures of You", but I have not specifically looked up any statistics; what I do know is that anywhere I have seen any mention of songs, I have seen far more references to most of their other popular songs than I have seen for "Love Song", and "Pictures of You" has been listed by some critics as one of the all time great songs). Again, It's a good song, but far from the level you have put it at. I would also argue this does not fit the meaning of a profound song; it has a very good meaning (as it is a literal love song that Robert wrote to his wife and childhood sweetheart), but there is nothing particularly profound in the song. It is actual one of (if not the) most straightforward song(s) they have have ever composed. It's not a song that you have to think about what it means; there is nothing convoluted nor particularly thought-provoking in the lyrics, no hidden meanings nor obscure references. This song is exactly what it says it is: a love song; no more, no less. As far as defining songs, I personally think "A Forest" is the most quintessential The Cure song there is (and probably has been performed more than any other song, as it seems to be performed at just about every concert they've ever held). For the early years of The Cure, I could see adding "Primary" and "Play for Today", but I would also say that "A Hundred Years" (although not as popular at the time as some other songs) was actually more indicative of their early musical stylings and popularity. I would also say that (regardless of popularity or radio play), nothin from either "Japanese Whispers" nor "The Top" could be considered as one of their defining songs, as these albums sounds and styles do not mesh with their overall artistic direction; not saying they're not good (as I love just about everything on both sides of "Srptaring at tge Sea"), but good is not necessarily iconic. Just my views on this topic, and I'm sure others will dissent, but I wanted to make sure that uninformed third parties know the difference between what each of us personally think, and what defines The Cure, a fantastic band with over 200 songs during their 40+ year career.
Love the reaction, you go from bobbing your head enjoying their music and you can tell your actually listening to the lyrics as the darkness seeps out and claims you as you have that look of WTF! LOL
My favorite Cure song! You should check out other alternative bands of the 80s n 90s like: The Psychedelic Furs The Church Jesus & Mary Chain The Pixies Depeche Mode The Soup Dragons Etc...
Yeah another Cure song that rips you apart but you cant stop listening to it because of the melody. Its almost like listening to a kid trying to explain what hurt feels like but smiling at the same time.
So, a lot of international music in 80's; goth was the vibe in the City, Boston, so music was dark, emotive, w/ great instruments and creative electronics...reminiscent of punk and progressively cool
they make a happy sounding song about death,, and suicide. That's what Robert Smith does, but he writes some beautiful love songs too. Check out "Catch", I'll think you'll like it
I’ve always thought this song is really about Simon when they fell our and he left and then wanted him to come back especially as it was released when he did return.
I hope you can see them some day, great concerts and not as mopey as people think... really good pop and mod rock. They played 3 hours in the atlanta sun, in August and all us old , pale cure fans and the band got sun stroke, but so worth it.
It seems like this song is about introducing another woman into his relationship, however I do not believe that to be the case, as he is absolutely infatuated with his wife. I always took the song to be about him fighting alcoholism.....and how it was affecting his relationship with his life.
Honestly i kinda wish you would stop trying to decipher the meaning and lyrics of the song and just enjoy the rhythm, beat, instruments, and vocals. When we all heard these songs in the 80's the last thing we thought about were the lyrics. Just tell us if you enjoyed the song as it is whatever the meaning.
