Robert Smith is the singer, lyricist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of The Cure. He's the only member who has appeared on every record and is clearly the chief creative force. He is the Morrissey AND the Johnny Marr of his band, basically. They started out with spiky Power Pop/New Wave ("Boys Don't Cry", "Jumping Someone Else's Train") in the late 70s, but by the early 80s, they were rejecting the sparkly New Pop (Human League, Duran Duran, Culture Club) on UK Top40 radio and exploring darker themes, alongside acts like Siouxsie and The Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Echo & The Bunnymen, and others - staking out the space that later became known as Goth with songs like "A Forest", "Charlotte Sometimes", and "The Hanging Garden". Perhaps as a rejection of the doom and gloom they had been trading in for a few years, their next several releases embraced the New Pop ethos and helped them establish themselves as a steady chart presence. "Let's Go to Bed", "The Walk", "Caterpillar" and "The Lovecats" are about as far removed from the depressive drones of their last few records as one could imagine. In 1985, they kinda split the difference, returning to Gothy textures and experimenting with Pop moves in equal measure, resulting in one of their best records, The Head on the Door, which featured the song you were humming "The Inbetween Days" as well as "Close to Me" and "A Night Like This".

He is the Morrisey and Johnny Marr of the band! 😁🤣😅 Thanx..the whole write up is a great insight to the band

@@HarriBestReactions By the time Robert was 25, he'd released five full albums (including Japanese Whispers) as The Cure, including one where he played all the instruments bar drums. He had recorded an album as a full time member of Siouxsie and the Banshees, and a live album with them. And also a side project called The Glove with the bassist from the Banshees. He was incredibly prolific as a young lad.

Robert and his wife have been together for 50 years as of 2023, and married for 35. He wrote this for Mary after they had gone on a vacation to the beach in the South of England.

A few other classic tunes by The Cure are "Lovesong", "Close to Me", "In Between Days", "Let's Go to Bed", "The Love Cats", and "A Forest" among many others. The guitar line in "Just Like Heaven" influenced a lot of players in the three decades since 1987 going by what I hear playing on the local new rock station when I'm out in the car.

Oh and the song you were referring to is “In Between Days”. I would recommend “The Caterpillar” and probably my most favourite The Cure song “Close To You”. Both videos are pretty odd and even scared me (at least “The Caterpiller”), but pretty brilliant too.

Very cool video. The "second guy" in The Cure would be the fantastic Simon Gallup on bass, a great companion to Robert Smith´s guitar

As a club DJ in the 80's. This was one of my favorites. It was also a crowd favorite. Light, uplifting, all those things you mentioned. Thankfully, there is a longer 12" version. At the time, another popular band was "The Cult". I always connect the two. Tunes like "(She sells) Sanctuary", "Fire Woman", and another, I can't recall. Keep up the good work, Harri. Gary, in the US.

Before the release of this song, The Cure offered the instrumental version to a French TV show named "Les enfants du Rock" for their intro music, it was a show about musical news on Rock (Rockline segment), Funk and Rap (Sex Machine segment) and experimental music and videos (Haute Tension segment). It seems like Robert and his mates really appreciated this show. Lol Tolhurst was the "second guy" of the band, he was their drummer from 1976 to 1982, then became the keyboard player before being fired by Robert Smith in 1989.

Oh Harri! So glad you are doing this song! Welcome to my highschool years! We called it alternative, but now I think it is called Goth. Love the Cure!!!!!! Thank you, made my day! Other songs: Love cats, Charlotte Sometimes, Burn, Fascination Street.

The song you sang/ hummed the melody to is "In Between Days", on of their best. "Boys Don't Cry", "Close To Me", "The Lovecats", "Lovesong", "Pictures of You", "A Letter To Elise", "Why Can't I Be You?", and "Never Enough" are just some of their best, can't-miss songs.

One of my favorites by The Cure is "The Upstairs Room." Another recommendation from the 80s is "Summer in Berlin" by Alphaville.

Like you I’m mostly a black music fan, but grew up on The Beatles, lots of 70s and 60s music thanks to my mother, BUT maybe even more 80s music. I grew up in the 80s and The Cure was definitely one of my favourite bands. They can go very dark as well as uplifting and still sound like The Cure.

After all these years, they still peak on my listening list. They always went their own way. A number of excellent songs were already mentioned. The story telling and lyrics are very compelling as well. Other ones I really like is Out of this world about escaping your own world and having to go back anyway, This is a lie about having to make definitive choices and how those should not be so once and for all and Last dance about reconnecting to an old love and how things have changed. Many great songs to drift away by.

Big Cure fan myself. Could give you all kinds of recommedations to react to. If I could choose one, I would like to see "Cold" from the Album Pornography on your channel. After listening for over 30years to this album, I can hardly imagine how others receive this song. On the other hand Pornography is an album that works best if I listen to the whole album in one go. Lets see what you come up with 👍

Any The Cure album until (around) 1993 will do innit. Strangely enough I personally think “A Forest” is not their best song from the early years. They really had so many better songs on their first albums.

14 year old me was so in love with him….. I adored his darkly romantic soul, to the point I would have gladly shared my eyeliner with him, even at risk of a nasty case of pink eye (my Mom forbade me to share my makeup, lest I get a nasty infection…..lol).
