I really think Marnie having a Morepeko is symbolic of her personality. She has a dark competitive side, but she also has a nice, not-so-bad side. When I saw her, I was under the impression that she isn't as dark as she seems

Marnie is a pretty common Scottish name, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was changed just to fit more with the Scottish aesthetic. As far as her intentions go, I think she’s going to fall into the lone wolf anime trope-making her increasingly annoyed with Team Yell ((which is a dumb name)), I don’t think Team Yell is the true antagonists, but I don’t think Marnie is their leader, yet. I think she may grow to appreciate her dedicated fan base as the story progresses-maybe they save her from Chairman Rose or something. At the end I think Marnie is going to be more of a Gladion- starts off antagonistic, but ends with being on somewhat friendly terms with the player. Bede is another matter entirely, I doubt that he is going to be strongly based on a religious figure. There’s a difference between designing Pokémon after mythological creatures and human characters based on actual people, especially of bede is going to be the primary antagonistic rival. I think he’s definitely heading in a direction similar to Silver though, where although we earn his respect by the end of the game, we are never friendly with him

If Chairman Rose really did recruit Bede to take on the gym challenge with the hope of overthrowing Leon, it could be because Rose or Oleana really is planning something nefarious and Leon either knows too much or went along with it and then turned against them, and is now threatening to expose their plan if they don't do what he wants, so they need someone to knock Leon off his perch before he can do that. It's a wild idea, but who knows…

bede and marnie both look so cool that im exited for the game again after being super upset about the graphics and dex issue. they are both well designed but i especially love bede and his smug face. and psychic trainers are pretty rare, which makes him even cooler imo

Alright so this is what i theorize: Marnie is the daughter of chairman rose (one evidence being the hairstyle, and second being how marnie's name is derived from *rose* mary). Team Yell is hired by chairman Rose himself to prevent others from undergoing the gym challenges and giving Marnie the advantage so that she can become the champion. Chairman Rose is also using Bede by giving him an endorsement to stop you and Hop from undergoing the gym challenge (however Bede has no idea that chairman rose is actually using him)

The gen 3 legendaries were based off Behemoth, Leviathan, and Ziz from Hebrew myths. It isn’t a stretch to say Sword an Shield could pull from Christianity

Ok, putting the tin foil hat on. I theorize that at the beginning of the game champ leon is showing obvious of being sick of being champ/being a face for corporations. So he endorses hop and pc because he wants a humble trainer/trainer not in roses pocket to take over. However everyone else sees through what he’s doing causing two things to happen. 1 Marnie sees this a nepotism and finally gets the guts to stand up for either dead relative who failed gym challenge/ or for poor town that was ruined due to the big corps like roses. Team Yell forms against her will to back her since they are either her loved ones or folks that radically believe in her cause. 2 chairman rose and olena panic because their corp is about to lose one of its biggest PR asset. So they sponser Bede, who is basically heel. They are confident that he would beat Hop and PC brutally which would upset Leon enough to want to fight him seriously rather than take a dive. No matter which person wins the battle, they’ll still have one of their trainers in the champ seat. In a way they will hire Bede to heal Leons fighting spirit. Bede doesn’t know this plan, so he thinks this is just a way for him to social climb.

I gonna say here. Team Yell has possibly the dumbest motivation to even be an organization

About the potential inspiration from st. Bede (i dont know how to spell it), maybe the story could relate to the catholic-protestant split in England under Henry VIII?

Here's my take on this I think Leon is on the side of good even though he is the champ he's not the champ Rose(if Rose is the main villain) wants as Leon is humble and doesn't care about money or fame but really cares about inspiring other trainers to follow their dreams along with having a burning passion for Pokemon battling and refuses to see it as only a tool for making money but sees it as way to bring people and Pokémon from all over the world not just Galar together via a peaceful way and to extent agrees to treat it like a major sport complete with sponsors because he believes this could be a way to show how Pokémon Battles bring people and Pokémon together as one but is disgusted by Rose who reveals he wants to use the Gym Challenge and the Champion's Cup for the sole purpose of making money and making his business more profitable and sponsors the main heroine/hero, and Hop as he sees two worthy potential successors to the title of champion due to the fact they have the same passion for Pokémon Battles along with similar views on Pokémon Battles as a whole as him. As for Bede I think since he's a jerk rival who according to some translations of the Japanese trailer has goals to not only become the champion but also replace Rose as the chairmen of the Pokémon League and the CEO of his company may have a similar story-arc as Silver to where he agrees to work for Rose as his hand-picked trainer to beat Leon but is unware that Bede may hate him for some reason and is making his own plans to not only become champion but overthrow his father as the League Chairman and CEO of the company with hopefully his losses to the main hero/heroine getting Bede to see that only having strong Pokémon and basically not fully bonding with them makes him no better then Rose. As for Marnie since she seems to be the same type of rival as Hugh, and to an extent Gladion aka shows respect, admits when she loses, but isn't looking to be best friends may have suffered some tragedy due to Rose and that basically made her become untrusting of others with her motivation for becoming Champion wanting to bring down Rose and everything he built including possibly the Pokémon League and due to her newfound untrusting nature she refuses any help given which is why she seems annoyed by Team Yell's attempts at helping her but as the story progresses the main heroine/hero, Hop, Leon, Sonia, Professor Magnolia, and hopefully a reformed Bede helps Marnie recover her ability to trust in others.

About the Saint Bede thing, another similarity between the two is that they both have white hair in their artwork.

I think there could also be some character working in the background, an enemy to Rose, who is employing Team Yell to help force Marnie into the Champion position somehow, in order to stop whatever Rose is trying to do with Bede.

Bede and ghetsis are the only Pokémon trainers to have their name spoken in their music. Bede is also an orphan. Ghetsis was a really old man. They also share hair colour. Coincidence? Probably. Side note, Bede's theme has a piece from pwt final battle from unova, there has to be some association Bede has with the unova region.

I don't think Rose is a villain. My bet is Oleana is the main villain, and she is manipulating Rose and his company. I also think Leon has some shady things going on.

My theory is that Marnie is Chairman Rose's daughter & he hired Bede to take down Marnie during the championship, mostly because he disapproves of Marnie's new lifestyle & what the future of the Rose Corp would be like when Marnie is in control. As for Leon, he's probably the heir of Rose's rival company.

I agree with you an Bede and drew similar conclusions. This is especially the case with the business angle. I believe Bede's motivation is loyality and family obligation accompanied by him being cocky as well. He feels pressure to do well to help out the business which emans he has a personal stake himself. Most likely he has a family member who is close to Chairman Rose or Chairman Rose is a family member of his. This also means that is Chairman Rose does have a more greed driven motivation, Bede may turn against him later when the plot thickens because of feeling used and taken advantage of. This makes sense to me because I could only see Bede being a pawn if he was doing this out of pressure and motivation from family to do well for the companies sake. As for Marnie. I believe she is not associated with team Yell. I think she tolerates them and their presence but that she is sort of doing her own thing. Her motivation is likely to access something she can only access as the champion. I believe she wants to capture one or more than one legendary in order to stop whatever chaos and drama unfolds within the games story. She essentially is taking it upon herself to be the hero. The reason is likely due to business. They want the games to go on and for the matches to not he cancelled so there is a cover-up in the region about the main events involving the legendaries but Marine sees the truth and is determined to stop it. You get involved and it is likely by the end Bede and the Champion put their differences aside and I could see you team up with the champion to save Galar after Marnie tries on her own and fails.

Here's a mild thought: I wonder if Marnie's story is going to end up that she's Chairman Rose's daughter. It occurred to me that other than being conspicuously the only two (Important to Story) NPC's we've seen with that particular hair color/shade of black, they also have VERY similar eye color. There's definitely enough of a physical resemblence to make me squint. If that's just me reaching, that's cool! No harm. But considering Game Freak / Nintendo has made those connections twice now in past games (Silver and Giovanni, Lillie/Gladion and Lusamine), I don't think it's too far of a stretch. Definitely an interesting thought to chew on, at least. (And the kicker that tilts into conspiracy territory but made me laugh - Hoops here said Marnie's name is *Mary* in Japan. And the name comes from Rosemary. Rosemary. Rose. Mary. Rose... and Mary. Coincidence? Maybe!)

That part about rosemary being a traditional mourning plant is very interesting. My family planted a rosemary bush at my grandpa's grave when he was buried because he loved "useful" plants (herbs, trees, berry bushes, etc.), so the religious & symbolic implications are very appropriate.

Does anyone else notice how Chairman Rose and Marnie's designs are very similar. I think they could be father and daughter and might have a similar style of relationship as Lillie and Lusamine did in SM/USUM

Based on his grey hair and pink/purple dress-like coat, bede kind of reminds me of Agatha from the elite four.

My theory is that Chairman Rose wants more power, specifically for his company that Leon might not give. Marine is trying to do things without any corporate help, which is why Team Yell are supporting her, seeing her as someone fighting against the man, big corporations and authority. But Marnie's actual goal might be to help someone or something in a more empathetic way, such as maybe a business that has been crushed by the big guys.

So anyone know the ending theme here? It slaps.

If what you said is true, that would pretty much mean that Chairman Rose's company is the exact opposite of the Aether Foundation and that Team Yell is basically Galar's version of Team Skull because Team Yell is the evil team in Sword and Shield and if Bede and Chairman Rose are trying to prevent you and Marnie from becoming the new champions, they are indirectly hindering Team Yell, which is the opposite of what the Eather Foundation did for Team Skull because they worked with them and helped them directly

Chairman Rose could want total control of the gym challenge so maybe that’s why he endorsed Bede, also Oleana and Marnie do look similar so maybe their related, and Oleana wants her sister(or cousin?) to become champion and stop Chairman’s Roses corruption and control of the gym challenge. It’d be cool if Bede does become champion and you have to work together with Marnie to put an end to Chairman Roses control. Plus if Leon was originally in on Chairman Roses scheme and realizes later on its bad and that’s why he endorses the player and Hop, it’d be fun to fight along side the former champion and your other two rivals to bring an end to the gyms corruption.

I see Bede as chairman Rose's investigator. I think Oleana is doing underhanded things and Rose wants to know who is doing it. Bede's attitude makes people think he is bad, but he is actually on the good side. As Rose and Bede don't know who is doing the underhanded stuff, Bede attacks anyone who might be conspicuous. And as team yell is constantly butting heads with you Bede might think you are with them.

Theory: Whoever becomes champion gets to summon a legendary Pokémon. If Bede takes the title, he’ll choose Eternatus, an evil Pokémon with which he and Rose will rule the world. Marnie would summon either an unstoppable force to defeat them or an immovable object to halt their progress. Marnie recruited Team Yell to stop Bede, as well as anyone else who might be working for Rose. (Such as you and Hop)

Well actually, Bede was adopted by rose. Pay attention to the dialog when you defeat the ghost gym and when the ruins are being destroyed. One of the things Sonia said was how Bede had no parents and Rose took him under his wing. Or How Rose says something about how Bede was all alone while telling him how disapointed he was. That's why Bede s been wearing his watch, and why it's so important for Bede to complete Roses mission s.

A part of me wonders if Marnie and Team Yell end up being some sort of Tertiary protagonist

I take a bet, Marnie is Bedes sister and actually wants to stop Bede from completing the actual evil teams objective. This was requested by their mom which passed away.....The chairman being their father, which goal is something like ressurecting his wife.
