Hey everyone, thank you so much for the incredible support you’ve given me on this video, it means a lot to me. 😊 This was a huge project so I don’t know if I’m going to do something like it again in the future, at least not any time soon. My next video is going to be a UISpy on Persona 3 Reload, so be sure to subscribe if you’re interested in seeing that!

That's why I say that piracy is not only a form of accessibility, but also the preservation of media that the industry does not value.

I wouldn't promote piracy but when Nintendo gives us no options then they have to understand why people do it and how to curb it better. When lost content occurs do they think people like that? We should do something.

@@GamingtheOtter "I wouldn't promote piracy but when Nintendo gives us no options then they have to understand why people do it and how to curb it better. When lost content occurs do they think people like that? We should do something." The problem is that pirates mostly try to crack games that are within a week of release. Sure, they will latch onto the rhetoric of "preservation" as an excuse. But it would be easier to get political support for preserving old games if people weren't trying to get the new ones without paying.

Physical is good, but emulation is what preserves gaming. Of course physical only helps if the full game is on the disc or cart.
@AquaTwist_
@AquaTwist_ Год назад
Unfortunately with games getting bigger in scope and content updates coming out it’s more difficult for physical copies of games to contain the full experience. I agree, emulation is necessary for game preservation; without it we wouldn’t be able to play some of the ports of games from older hardware and they’d be lost to time.

Corporations will be corporations. They don't care about games in the slighlest. They only care about money and they will abandon old games and all the hard effort that these artists have put into them if it means profit. Game preservation only occurs where there is freedom and no corporate terms: PC gaming (piracy). When it comes to corporations, piracy is not a crime; it's an act of self defense.

I’m glad you showed us there’s a museum dedicated to show why we deserve to preserve and this video to show all ends of preserving games good or bad. What really hit me was the beginning when you showed the completions preserving the games by buying it all on the hardware to show how & what games were available and played as on these relics. Most people think who cares because it’s already emulated. Sure. But this shows how we played them. What was available to us how we bought or run the games and what limitations we had during our lives.

After visiting the National Videogame Museum in Texas, this topic is more important to me than before. I try not to emulate when I can, it makes the games less enjoyable to me as opposed to playing them on official hardware. It loses a part of the original experience which makes these games enjoyable.

35:40 funny you mention this, because there was some virtual console wii game whose rom was taken from a rom site because Nintendo junked the master file. I don't remember the details, but it was like the most ironic thing given Nintendo's history of DMCA.

Unless you're talking about something else, it's not only some game, it's the first SMB! It's been believed that it took a ROM from some site because it has a custom header (like ROMs usually do). However it seems that it may got debunked in the past years through some digging around and noticing that the header may be a byproduct of Nintendo hiring an emulator developer instead of sending a C&D (iNES in this case, also known as the first functional NES emulator started development as far as 1996), then using a similar tech the cancelled Animal Crossing 64DD used (it got released as a standard N64 game instead) for the potential NES games emulating on it. Further analyzing people found that all NES games on Wii share this header, as long as they were used in Animal Crossing (minus Clu Clu Land). That's what I gathered out of it, but it's most likely that Nintendo didn't use a ROM from a site. Quite frankly, I knew about this debacle from ways back but only now decided to look into it
@AquaTwist_
@AquaTwist_ Год назад
@@Swetzie-nm7ud it’s cool to see them reusing the emulation technology from the original Animal Crossing. I never played it but being able to play NES games in it as early as 2001 is crazy to think about! It’d be cool if you could do that in New Horizons with demos of similar games, or if you have a NSO account you could play the full games directly in New Horizons itself.

I have an idea as to why companies like Nintendo don't want their potential customers to be distracted from their newer games and their attention being shifted away to their older games that they aren't selling. It seems really bizarre to the average consumer like me that a multi billion dollar corporation would go out of their way to take down materials that they no longer sell. However, in the perspective of a huge corporation protecting their revenues, they want consumers to be buying their latest hardware and software. If consumers play their older games that they don't sell, to them, they are losing potential customers. With their mindset, they are losing money when people are playing old abandoned games because they are being distracted from the latest hardware and games. Same probably goes for just about any other big corporation like Ubisoft, EA, and Microsoft. Playing old abandoned games that they would rather pretend don't exist, aren't making then money. My fear is as the economy continues to get worse and these big companies demand more and more of peoples' money and time with their "live service" games, they will eventually hit a point in which they hit a wall of revenue potential. I'm scared by then, they will then begin to shift into going after rom sites and abandonware sites to turn those people playing older, off-market games into paying customers. Hopefully I'm wrong, but if I was a jerk corporation who wanted all of the money in the world, I'd start a war on rom sites and abandonware sites and force people's attention back over to my products and services.

I work retail, and I have a feeling that within 5 years there will not be a “physical” option for any media type. Game, Music, and Movie companies really want to go all digital, so that you can’t own any media. I do not have a good feeling about how the future of media is, especially with how the CEO of Ubisoft was saying that we should get used to not owning anything. My prediction which is very unfortunate, but I am noticing that disc free consoles are more common than the disc versions. DVD and CD players are getting harder and harder to find. The Movie and music selections are shrinking. The physical game selection is shrinking, but the digital download wall is getting bigger…..Give it 5 years and the only way to play games, watch movies or listen to music will be only through streaming services like Microsoft Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, Spotify, or any other streaming service, and will not be available when the respective companies decide they want the consumer to move on to whatever new thing they want you to play now.

What i find funny is piracy is put in the moral pedestal because the big players stoop so low when talking about preservation. This is coming from a guy who played pirated copies of PS1 and PS2 games and go to emulation for other handheld consoles from i am still 5 YEARS OLD!!! i support emulation wholeheartedly because i start from a pirate gaming life and i cannot fully trust anyone else to do the preservation so might as well don the tricorn. oh if you want to play on original hardware, there is like PS2 with something like HDD to put games into it, PS1 also has it but the tool cost like 100$. PS3 has it. NDS and 3DS has R4. so playing on original hardware is not that hard but tracking the original hardware itself is annoying at worst.
@AquaTwist_
@AquaTwist_ 7 месяцев назад
I don’t blame you, tracking original hardware can be expensive and difficult to set up with modern TVs, especially consoles like the NES and SNES with their older cables. Emulation is a great alternative for this and is a convenient option nowadays.

Good video, but unfortunately most companies don't care about game preservation at all because if you own the game and aren't constantly paying for a subscription service then they get less money and to them that's "bad". It's really up to the consumers or fans to truly preserve media at this point because companies aren't going to do it anytime soon. I do agree that playing on original hardware if someone wants to is important as well. But emulation is good as well like the video said especially in preserving games in general. But also the completist donating nearly every eshop game to the video game foundation is good. But unfortunately some eshop games were already delisted before he bought anything if i make sense? Examples: meme run and tetris were already delisted before 2022 and freakyforms was delisted as well. So unfortunately it doesn't preserve everything. Anyway my point is that considering that Nintendo closed the eshop and xbox is doing the same with xbox 360. It just unfortunately shows that these companies don't care anymore about game preservation like they used to in terms of Nintendo with virtual console and probably xbox with backwards compatibility(which they plan to remove next generation with all digital console). It's sad that these companies don't care and are hostile to their fans. They become more anti consumer by the day. I don't have much hope because an all digital future is coming and preservation is going to be harder because of it unfortunately. But also the mainstream gaming outlets are most likely with these gaming companies as well so the media also demonizes emulation and virtual console and probably anything good for the consumers because one they're probably paid off to say it and two they probably wanna work there so they gotta be a shill for them i guess? Anyway sorry for long paragraph and sorry for probably going a bit off topic near the end of it. I guess I said more than I expected lol. But like to me especially after the eshop closure and now xbox is destroying it's backwards compatibility program. It's not good at all and well seeing these companies basically say screw you to the consumers/fans is really sad to me because they will unfortunately never care ever. Again sorry for it being long. Idk if people will read it this long... edit: about the completist stuff again also he did it but unfortunately some games were still coming out for wii u and 3ds mostly indie games and unfortunately that also made it not complete. So yeah just wanted to mention that.

I agree with everything you said, and read the entire thing. Companies are definitely being anti-consumer, which is frustrating, especially in the future as more and more games get digital-only or limited-print physical copies. Nintendo even did that with Metroid Prime Remastered, which was difficult to find physically for the first 1/2 months it came out. I hope more companies like Fangamer and iam8Bit pop up and become more mainstream, games like World of Horror and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk are superb and deserve to be equally preserved as Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Spider-Man 2, and Baulders Gate III. Again, that's why I printed custom covers for my games and hope to one day back all them up into a flashdrive/SD Card that fits inside these cases, so they're preserved forever.

Great video. I always want to share my standpoint from being an emulator only user. I’ve been emulating games since probably 1999 or so. SNES emulators were still sketchy back then. Many old consoles just aren’t compatible with new hardware and emulators can provide a look and feel on a “simple” PC if you’re not trying to emulate anything really current generation. There are great companies like 8BitDO that make excellent retro style controllers for any console that are simple USB or Bluetooth connections to your PC. As for the emulators, the legal issues are clear. You are legally allowed to play a copy of a game you own. You are allowed to make a backup of a game you own. Think of it as taking pictures from the pages a book you bought in case there’s a fire. Nintendo has lost this lawsuit in the past and they know it. The legal problem is with obtaining the copies of the games. They are well within their rights to take away copies of their games. Most often developers are in the abandonware phase and don’t care. It’s only the Big N who is greedy.
@AquaTwist_
@AquaTwist_ 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for enjoying the video! Nintendo building a museum in Japan is a great first step, but they should have better preservation efforts of their classic titles instead of tying them to subscription services where you're renting those games, not owning them.

I'm incredibly late on this, but I feel like there's a problem that needs to be addressed in tandem with the lack of game preservation. A lot of games (Mortal Kombat 11 and Fortnite for starters) rely incredibly heavily on consistent server access, so even if you got a complete physical copy of those games, you still won't be able to get the full experience after 20 or 30 years because a core part of those games require the maintenance of servers on the developer's end that you have no control over.

He spent all this money and time to preserve 100s of games yet his charity (including his Dad, the founder and other members), didn't properly donate the necessary money for a more serious cause. Truly messed up. As for your second point, I can see where you;'re coming from, but I have a bad feeling that things are only going to get worse in the coming decades for preservation. It may not seem necessary now but as more games become digital only and limited-release (look at what happened with Super Mario 35 and Pac-Man 99), this problem is only going to get worse. The main point of this video is a warning to the future to prevent these sorts of situations from happening, before it's too late.

i hate this discourse of " physical = preservation" no, DRM FREE = preservation. its better to have an digital copy of an game without DRM so you can make as many copies as you want than having an physical copy of it that may roten over time. the issue with digital is that it can get delisted but if it dont have an drm then at least it should be easier to pirate it in case the company delist it, wich create an incentive to not delist it. there a few exceptions of course, like games with chips that improve their performance (super fx for example) or capabilities (like mission impossible for gbc that came with an ir transmissor and kirby that came with an gyro)

the issue wih limited run is that they relase games... in an limited format... sure they cant print those games forever but they should at least let people who want to purchase pay in advance and produce at least one copy for each person who reserved the game to make sure the supply will be as big as the demand, instead of priting an small number of copies wich make the value of those games skyrocket on the used market. another issue is that they only print games that are very popular, i know that there is no demmand for an physical relase on an small indie game, but if they can bundle with other games (like an bundle of unpopular games, maybe mixed with other more popular ones) they might be able to print even niche games in physical format.

As much as I love Limited Run for giving us physical copies of games which wouldn't get physical otherwise (especially DOOM Eternal for Switch like I mentioned in the video), they're taking too much advantage of their releases being limited. It made sense when they started but now we're at a point where physical media is more important than ever, but their business model has barely changed. It would be nice if all their releases were like their Amazon store, where they're up as long as they have enough copies, instead of a limited (albiet open) preorder window. Lan game 2. Local multiplayer 3. Online play Wail the game I'm working on it goin to be multiplayer and probably free to play I have plan to make the game to not really on one server My ideas it to be self hosting and the alos I will have the option to local multiplayer with same computer or lan As for how to the store I will work it's pretty semple the item shop I will work on server but if don't have access to this server you just able to play but with out cosmetics everything that say right now it's what I have plan to do this game it's in progress And it's not playble at this point My point is just because game is multiplayer dasn't mean the have to relay on single server After all most old multipleyer game have self hosting and the option to play online and lan. One other cool 😎 mekanics I want to add is the option to play lan game and local multiplayer at the same time And in my game you will able to play split screen up 4 players on the same computer that means you have the option to play multiplayer even with out internet connection But in the order to be easier and event better I have plan to make this system to work on lan and online as well that means I theory you will able to play up to 8 players with 2 computer's. And wail I will not have the older versions and physical media on the game I'm working I'm still solo developer it probably very easy to for someone to preserve the video game I'm working wean the release in fact in the way I have plan to create even if all the servers daying and not even alive I will probably Way's to play online if this game ever release.

I don´t mind remakes as long as they´re done well, but also keep the original games and art available for people to download. But yeah, preservation on a consumer level is done extremely poorly. Many companies however do preserve their video games, but in source code form that can last forever.. However, consoles do hold preservation back due to the porting problem it takes for these old games to work on new hardware. And console manufacturers are always making these things difficult to be backwards compatible. PC however does not have these problems and PC can offer better preservation solutions if done properly.

I agree with everything you said. The Switch is an excellent device for stuff to get ported on, but what happens in 10, 20 years when the Switch is obselete? Is it going to just be an endless cycle where games keep getting ported, updated, and ported again forever?

other issue too is that there are a lot of times where the source code is lost after extended periods of time.

The time to go after the video game companies would have been when Nintendo was aggressively going after the ROM sites. Those site owners should have banded together and mounted a defense. Those sites disappearing was an astronomical blow to retro gaming. Had they mounted a defense fund I know many many folks would have contributed. Wasted opportunity IMO. And Nintendo was dead wrong for just bullying those sites. Retro gaming is a culture. If Nintendo was smart they would have found a way to make those sites legal as it really should be about not only preserving the games but fostering a positive relationship with the culture they helped to create.

Absolutely, people need to be better about backing up ROMS and fighting to keep ROM sites up in the future, otherwise stuff will go lost to time.

@@AquaTwist_ This is why I'm for owning the physical carts now -- for the sole purpose of ROM extraction. This is vital. 👍 This nonsense of digital-only releases is stinky horse $hit. You don't even own the damn game.

This is a tough one. Some games I guess by design such as overwatch... never had single player... guess it unfortunately made sense to delete 1. It's kind of like an mmo though.. OW2 is still OW1, they're just not right in the head. not including online only games, well, I think a cool feature for next gen could be... making downgrade easy? that might require no DRM which would be appreciated. Just something to make 1.0 versions playable.. it should be a right to play them and while it is easily via piracy, Idk how hard or easy it is to dig in "1.0 of cyberpunk" or some other game like all the early access junk out there, palworld & project zomboid who knows lol. I don't play on console as much or have an interest in version changing but this could preserve versions, no matter how ugly or good some are, it's arguably sometimes the newer version is a downgrade, and the only rule behind this could be that online may be inaccessible with the older versions if we're counting all games, but that's fine, I think this should make devs a bit more cautious on their 1.0 releases too if "patching it up" isn't as easy when navigating in the UI to that version is a thing. anyway, that's kinda off topic, but while I think emulators are great... I think EmuVR does it so perfectly well. it's unfortunate how little support they have going for it, when it could be something bigger & better, it could even be an official thing, but I don't think that is possible I guess considering all the companies property bunched together.. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft all together in this virtual bedroom, playing multiple games at once in one single app. One app, multiple systems, that's probably the best appeal besides VR. Don't think they have an xbox emulator yet as I write this, but I mentioned Microsoft cause they did have an emulated windows 98 computer on there, while playing your PS2 and Nintendo consoles via co-op.. well, the co-op is limited lol, but, the idea EmuVR is doing seems pretty good in preservation but, none of those major corporations don't care... they may prefer people buy their newer games at full price until they disappear eventually just like everything else ):
@AquaTwist_
@AquaTwist_ 7 месяцев назад
I'll have to look into EmuVR, that sounds like a really fascinating idea, especially if VR becomes more mainstream in the future. Online-only games or games that depend heavily on online suck for preservation imo, they seem to be designed to have a definitive expiration date. Once that date's passed, you can't play the game anymore and it's no better than it being thrown away or deleted.

If you ask me I think the preservation of mobile games is even worse than console games. Cause I’m just gonna pirate the shit out of the console games whether they like it or not but mobile games rely on the App Store and can be taken down or become unacceptable because of something as simple as an os update or a new phone or even the original phone dying. Along with there being no way to download the files games like flappy bird can easily be lost to time
@AquaTwist_

Absolutely. Crazy to think that Flappy Bird was delisted 10 years ago now and it’s seemingly difficult to play the original version of it. Good thing I’m not too big into mobile games, but I feel bad for the fans of these games when they get delisted.

I have an idea which I think would work: The government would fund a game preservation console. The console would have all the legacy titles that tax payers are willing to pay to preserve (I am assuming there is a limit to how much emulators can do and not all games can be emulated to satisfactory levels) and how it would work is the consumers who buy the console pay subscription to play these old games. It would be a yearly subscription like gamepass. The government would fund the creation of the machine through your tax dollars. Every year a list of new games is added to the preservation console but a rule would exist that games must be a certain age in oldness for them to qualify. Game companies would need to prove in court that they lost money when an old game was available on the subscription service before the government would pay them in damages for that game being on the preservation console. Retro compilations often get released on commercial systems (for example Megaman recently had 35th anniversay and their old games are available in compilation packs on digital stores) so the government and the game company would work out a system based on how many sales the retro game compilation sold to figure out how much damages is awarded to them. If the tax payers can't afford a popular title to be on the game preservation console they can opt to not have those titles available on the game preservation console for the time that the retro titles are still available commercially before those titles go back on the console once more. How it would be structured: It would look just like the Good Old Games system. All the best old games can be available to play and enhancemeents to those games could even be made with the tax payers money to have them look better on high definition tv and monitors. The ability to revert to classic mode can be chosen to ensure you can see what they looked like on the original hardware that they ran on for the history buffs who want authenticity. Anyway what do you think of this idea? You can't achieve it without public funding imo. Since companies are greedy and do not want you to be able to play old games if it means you won't buy new games. So there is an incentivie to make playing old games harder in time. Whereas if the tax payers actually pay the government to develop the retro console and have it as a public service for those researching the history of gaming it could work on the basis that all our art and tech had to come from somewhere and people today making games may want to dip into the decades that they were not even born in to sample what past games looked and felt like if they wish to know game history. Currently we don't have government body on the prservation of interactive digital art and entertainment. Now that the average age of gamers is adult men, it may be time to pressure government to put some kind of legislation in to keep history alive so future generations can see what today's game developers achieved. After these people die, they will have their names in the credits forever so your descendants can see who pioneered what idea and which company innovated in what genre. Governments are funded by working population. So to keep this neutral so ALL companies have to follow laws, will ensure no company is jealous of the others since they all eat the cost of having their back catalog on the preservation console. What I am saying is this has to be ENFORCED not encouraged. Artists and creators who made the games you enjoy would have to support this and sign the petitions and be involved in running this organisation since games are not just products but also a artform now. (independant companies are making innovative ideas today and these will die off if nobody knows about those guys)
@AquaTwist_
@AquaTwist_ 7 месяцев назад
It’s a good concept but it’s complicated. Multiple governments would have to have their own version of this console; I wouldn’t imagine only 1 global preservation console to be possible. Also I don’t imagine all taxpayers would want to support this idea, especially people who don’t like video games.

@@AquaTwist_ Most parents of kids would love taxes going to educate kids about videogames as artform that evolved to what we have now which is a multibillion dollar industry that is larger than movies. It's not about games but the history of the game industry. If you don't like videogames that is beside the point. The industry provides jobs to musicians, composers, voice actors, animators, programmers, costume designers, world designers, creature designers, sculptors, toy business licenses (noticed there is a cool action figure of Heihachi with release of Tekken 8) so whether or not people like videogames or not isn't the reason to preserve old games. It's to give credit to the people that built the industry and help educate the non-gamers understand the origins of where things came from. (they may not PERSONALLY like games or even play them, but want to invest in the game industry and need a solid understanding of the terminology for example. Their pension rely on knowing which companies are best-in-class for making certain game types which helps them make informed decision on who to invest in for the future) It would be like you saying "I don't like airplanes" and that is the basiss for not having historical museums educating people on the history of planes. It's not about you individually but education. Example: what if your son or daughter wanted to know what a metroidvania game is and where did the idea come from? The best way to educate them is let them play Metroid and Castlvania Symphony of the Night seperately. Then ask them where do they think the word came from? They will EXPERIENCE what the gameplay of that genre is rather than be told about it. This will help them if they ever become a game designer. They will see how the melding of adventure and RPG with 2D platform action games worked back in the day so they can understand what they would be competing with if they ever decide to make the next Hollow Night or Bloodstained. Why is this important to parents? The education increase their chance of getting a job in the industry because they played the games that defined those genres not just have vague understanding of them from merely reading wikipedia articles.

why not open the hardware study it go to a scrap yard melt it and reconfigure it analyze the codes from the original of it's make up for videogame discs reading and study the discs and do the same. try replicating the hardware the coding for its displays on screen. done

My efforts to preserve physical media are meaningless. I know that but I am still trying... Physical and digital should co-exist but trends lead to profit and that skews the dial in favour of digital. The general public don't want 'clutter' and want simplicity at the very core. People are very comfortable for paying full price for a rented product. Tangibility is a meaningless concept now. Look at books/music/gaming. Its sad even a little depressing to know my sons will grow up in a world where media has no tangibility and is not owned in a true sense. But we all made this happen. Lets be real about it. Not an insult just a reality check. Why is physical media dying and why ain't more people boycotting digital because of it? Why do people like me care so much? Piracy is a necessary act. Its a moral graveyard but it is important. Anything can be given a positive or negative narrative. Piracy is an answer to a question that publishers are rarely asked these days and rarely challenged on. Preservation of ALL history is necessary. To lose sight of our past means we lose the ability to reflect and grow. There has to be a battle and a push back to publishers. There has to be competition in the space. There has to be people willing to break rules and disrupt standards otherwise the industry will never develop. Stagnation in video games is a real thing. How many FIFA's? How many COD's? How many GTA's? How many Madden's? How many FPS? Physical is tangible and this is a part of a larger argument around the industry in general. Profit is not being re-invested at the same rate its been collected by the suits. I wish we could figure out physical but there are so many red flags with space/environment/cost that it just isn't in people's hearts no more. Just remember: Digital is NEVER for life.

Absolutely, I think there’s gonna be another crash in the industry within the next decade. There’s too many big games coming out from all the AAA studios, and that doesn’t include the thousands of quality titles produced by indies. I think indies are going to become the mainstream and AAA releases will becomes stale and obsolete. I think physical is going to become mainly focused for indie releases, and become a niche. If major retailers like Best Buy and Target close their stores and go online only, which I’m worried is gonna happen soon, then that’s when physical will probably die down a lot more and digital will become the main way games are released. Glad I’m not alone in this, I’d love to fight to keep preservation of gaming at the very least alive in more ways than just this video, like helping Digital Eclipse with one of their future Gold Master titles. Thank you for the insight! 😊
