This story is incomplete and framed in such a manner to create an argument against the US policy. Fact not acknowledged is the enormous scale of Chinese subsidies designed to glut the market and destroy western competition. This “business” approach by China is decades old and has cost the USA many industries over past decades.
The US Government has subsidized US Automakers as well as Oil/Gas companies to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. In fact, they've ramped up THAT kind of spending while China was diverting their government resources from fossil fuels to renewables and from ICE to NEV. This is the point. Both nations have been picking winners, but they picked a smart category which results in circular economies and self reliance on domestic energy. We chose to subsidize ICE which increases dependence on foreign oil which (in our case) is directly correlated to trillions of dollars in military spending. Our government chose to prop up companies which build disposable 150k vehicles which pollute the air, have lower reliability at higher total costs of ownership. We don't only subsidize directly, we also provide local, state, and federal tax breaks. Structurally it is difficult to track and quantify the magnitude of our malinvestment. Adjusted for scale or population, has the Chinese government really spent more pumping its automakers? A few years ago, they had about 500 NEV automakers. Now there are less than 100. When a country has that many human beings and a vastly superior education system...their output will be very difficult to beat. -Producer Tim
After the oil price spike in 2008, China's response is opposite of what the US did. US continued the business as usual except for Tesla. China used the opportunity to pivot its auto industry.

This was my first stop here and I like (and subscribed) to your various subjects here today. I am not a fan of protecting American industries with these tariffs. Legacy US automakers have sat on their hands and embraced the ICE while China has moved ahead with EVs and are making a positive impact on climate change. I’d buy a BYD in a heartbeat if available to support their initiatives.
BYD is an interesting story because a primary source of investment has been American conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway (Warren Buffet & Co). The lines between what is Chinese and what is American are not as crisp as many would have us believe. Ford and GM currently build vehicles in China but are not leading there. Tesla is the most American car company by just about any metric and it is among sales leaders wherever it competes, including China. That shows us that Chinese automakers are not unbeatable... rather a few big US players are simply unfit to compete. Many people are unaware that new EVs are increasingly supporting Vehicle to Grid technology which makes every electric automobile a small power grid. In California and Texas, the grid has already been strengthened by virtual power plants composed of large fleets of cars owned by consumers. Even better, EV drivers are paid handsomely by the utility for providing that power during peak consumption times. -Producer Tim

Neither Rivian nor Hyuindai Group currently sell vehicles in the USA which feed into the grid. As you've pointed out, both offer V2X which allows the vehicles to power devices which require 120v power. We've used our Rivian R1T for that. Our Cybertruck, however, does power our home with Tesla's new PowerShare technology. It is capable of feeding the grid or simply removing the load of our home from the grid during time of grid stress. Thank you for sharing your experiences. So where were the Chinese EV imports in 2008? There were no restrictive tariffs then. China was building go carts that no westerner would drive nor would it pass any level of safety.

A solar cell covered 3 wheeler is a publicity gimmick to attract investors and potential customers. That is Aptera's "game". The fundamental reason for 3 wheel design is to work around, and avoid, numerous federal and state regulations, many regarding safety. They realized the folly of the 3 wheeler (no market for it), shifted to a 4 wheel design, and promptly went bankrupt. Like it or not, Aptera will join Arcimoto, Electromechanica and the Bricklin 3EV in the scrapheap of three-wheeler curiosities.
Many viewers don't realize that we were the first media source to drive a production ElectraMeccanica Solo. We did our drive with the CEO and included a detailed interview. Fun fact, the vehicle did shut down at at intersection in Van Nuys, California. It was pushed to the side of the road by police. The company folded in large part because that problem turned out to a persistent engineering flaw. The company wound up buying the all back for full price and shipped them back to China. Definitely agree that school busses are great for going EV, looking forward to seeing those when they arrive to the area near me. I'm also cautiously optimistic about the future Scout products, will be interesting to see where they are going and how quick they can spin up and get there. @MissGoElectric EVs are very different than ICE from a data security standpoint and it has everything to do with the features enabled by batteries. For example, I’ve never entered my credit card info into any ICE vehicle like I do in a Rivian, Tesla etc. to support Plug n’ Charge. Add to that the location and personal data from the “phone-as-key” and “Sentry mode” systems that are made possible with large uninterrupted power sources in an EV. I love those technologies and I want to use them but they create risks that are specific the EVs.
Entering a credit card is not required. Those services are optional. Tens of millions of drivers of ICE vehicles have entered credit information for OnStar service and data hotspots. Sentry mode is optional. Phone as key is optional. Millions of today's ICE/Hybrid vehicles have phone as key. Some also allow remote camera viewing. The technology is not exclusive to EVs. PHEVs have ample battery to enable 100% of the same features for extended periods. PHEVs are not part of the new trade policies. -Producer Tim
By all means, please educate me about these millions of ICE and PHEVs with phone as key and sentry mode. I’m deep into this stuff and I’ve never come across them. You’d eat up a standard 12v battery so fast recording 24/7 video from 5 cameras. ICE vehicles don’t/can’t have this feature.

Yes, lobbying by legacy auto brands against EV quota timelines and emissions requirements was also a factor. That's why Biden's previous policy required union shops for higher EV tax credit availability, thereby excluding Tesla from receiving the same benefits as other US manufacturers.
Excellent summary of the tariffs. Thank you. The tariffs will raise prices on EVs in the US. I love my Ioniq 6 (paid 38k) and drive it locally. I drive my ICE Chevy Impala for road trips. The US will be like Cuba used to be driving old gas/diesel vehicles. At least the prices of used EVs in the US will go up, I think, in 2025, 2026 because new EV prices will go up.

Thank You for saying the tariffs are not a good idea. Interestingly the US govt under George W Bush passed incentives for EV's in 2008 a year before China. But as you pointed out legacy automakers did not take advantage of that set of incentives and now they find themselves at least a decade behind the Chinese auto makers.
We have noticed that automakers have taken in tens of billions of dollars of government help and they are recording record profit. GM is buying back its own stock. We aren't sure if that is the most effective use of taxpayer dollars for the common good. -Producer Tim

My question is; Should NIO be immune to this in some way, with regard to being complaint to USA National Security Issues, as I heard from Kyle from Out Of Spec Reviews, when he was in Europe late last year, driving the new NIO ET5T Chinese Electric Station Wagon, when he said that NIO's software team is based in California and that he knows many of their Software Engineers, so they know the system,would make the technology and software would not breech any laws?

US customers will pay in the short run also. The prevention of competition from foreign brands will allow US manufacturers to sell low numbers of high-priced EVs for years rather than encouraging the development of less expensive models that would sell in far greater numbers.
@@GG-si7fw correct its such BS that Government Motors and BS Barry used the $$ to buy back stock. GM and others screwed up and should have used that $$ to invest in EV manufacturing like it was intended. UAW negotiations (pay, bonuses, less work hours Exct) this raises the cost of every car which the consumer must pay for.
UAW actively lobbies and pays for media specifically to slow EV adoption. Why? EVs require very few human beings to manufacture because they have far fewer parts. Hybrids however, require more people to build than less complicated gas-only vehicles. UAW has been actively pushing for more hybrids. @@richardmorin4518 The UAW has been around for decades. They are not new expense, it's been there. But buying back stocks is newer. I first heard of it when Ford started doing this in the 2000's when Bush allow corporations to bring back money from overseas and not get taxed if they reinvested in the company to create more jobs and Ford went a step further and laid off 5,000 employees.

While the big 3 ( not really anymore as Stelantis is not American) are confused, Tesla was taking the EV NA market by storm. The legacy automakers will once again receive subsidies to protect union jobs. The only way they can compete with Tesla is to build in Mexico and China. All Canadian Tesla highland 3 are Chinese and Canadian Tesla Y are form California and China.
I understand wanting to protect and promote American manufacturing and jobs, but… with the climate crisis growing exponentially worse every day, we need "all hands on deck" to get rid of tailpipes worldwide. If that means allowing Chinese EVs to be sold in the country… well, we'd better just "suck it up." I'd never heard of WattEV, but wish them the best!

I agree it would be nice to have Chinese EVs in our market. However, we need to protect our domestic auto manufacturing (all manufacturing, not just GM and Ford). Ideally our domestic manufacturers would have truly competitive vehicles and the geopolitics would allow 100% free trade. Unfortunately neither is true. Tesla might be an exception, but Elon seems to be determined to run it into the ground. They need to build cars that appeal to all people rather than just early adopters and tech bros.

Tariffs protect workers, corporate & citizen/consumers long term. Unchecked, Chinese imports would crash our economy, even Tesla & give China control over our gov well beyond the scale of the chip shortage. You won't know how bad it can get until it's too late. Bolt EV was under $30K -$7500, should have sold 2x if people want cheaper EVs.

@@MissGoElectric well, we seem to be paying the price in canada too. no chinese ev oem's or jv's here. no sales of chinese brands here, unlike mexico,. perhaps canadian market is small or it's politics. according to one prominent economist's report, there won't be enough supply of ev's for the 2035 goal of no new ice cars allowed. nor sufficient grid to handle the load.
It is interesting because Canada gets many Tesla vehicles from China rather than the ones built in the USA. As for grid strength....the next generation of EVs strengthen the grid. @@MissGoElectric --i've read stories like those. perhaps in some sunny places. but canada has a very low solar generation forecast in the next 20-30y. most of the increase in electricity gen will come from nuclear -somehow. ontario has already announced a likely new gas plant + old nuclear refurb to meet new demand. --and tesla cars do not charge anything -missing V2L much less V2G. --yes, we get some lower priced LFP teslas from china, but these are not that well in the affordable price range, not to mention choice! --maybe it's possible to import some chinese oem ev's from mexico, i'll go there and drive one back lol.

When the US government bailed out GM that could have been seen as unfair to other automakers but they did not retaliate. In fact China increased it's purchase of GM cars by about a million per year in the years following the bailout. Buick would not exist if it had not been so popular in China. VW used to get half it's profit from China. So now the talking point is to say they somehow "stole" technology for companies that didn't make an EVs?
Please include an introduction to the SASAC and the benefits they provide SOEs in China. Contrast that to industry in the US. People need to understand what western industry and mining are competing with. Information is sparse.

I don't mind tariffs on things made in the U.S. for a reasonable price. What I don't like is that no American car maker is even trying to make an affordable EV. Tesla's are sort of like BMWs and appealing to that market. Chevy nixed the Bolt. If U.S. car companies won't make one, let me buy a Chinese one.

Modern EVs pose a whole new level of risk from a data security perspective. You’re sharing personal, financial, location-based data. There is no way I’m sharing that data with an adversarial government. Period. I’d prefer an outright ban rather than just tariffs but that would require congress to actually do something.
We have heard government leadership make this point, but it is a false correlation. Some of today's EVs collect data and have computers which are always running. SO DO TODAY's GASOLINE VEHICLES! The data collection has little to do with the size of the battery in a vehicle. A Plugin Hybrid can capture and send loads of data for weeks. -Producer Tim
You’re wrong, EVs are able to collect an order of magnitude more data because they’re always on and always aware. If you think ICE cars are the same the simple solution is banning them also.
I've already replied to you with a list of dozens of ICE and PHEV models which have "always on" data connections and many more which can transmit from their 360 degree cameras any time. That is exactly our point. Chinese ICE vehicles are not on the chopping block and neither are PHEVs. The reason is that American brands are building both vehicle types in China. In fact, American brands are importing Chinese-built vehicles in these categories. My personal viewpoint is that true motivations behind movements to ban Chinese EVs is to ensure that there is no real competition and our laggard industrial players can continue to profit without having to spend what is required to be the best. Under the guise of national security threats, a president can unilaterally outlaw just about anything if they'd like to. -Producer Tim

The EV industry has shifted to a race to the bottom. By that, I mean that it was far easier to make the business case for a car company to sell overpriced EV cars to wealthy early adopters than it is to drive down the cost to produce so that you can build reasonably priced cars at a profit. Musk started the price war that now threatens the entire industry. No one was making profits at building reasonably priced EVs. They inherently cost more to produce, especially with Tesla's now copied, new industry standard of using 75-212 kWh oversized batteries. Musk assured the industry batteries would cheapen quickly claiming $100 kWh at the pack level. But Musk is extremely short sighted and eventually realized his master plan never accounted for resource mining and refining limitations. We can't build these things at scale fast enough and the cost to produce will not come down as a simplistic comparison using Moore's law or Wright's Law would have predicted. In fact, just as you'll have to charge more for oversized SUV and trucks because of their massive batteries, and those oversized vehicles will require considerably more energy, creating inefficient designs will strain the resouce supply even more. We should be focusing on building hundreds of e-bikes in place of each large battery EV. We're now stalling the EV transition with no one, including Chinese companies, building EVs with a profit margin. Ford and Rivian are showing you these vehicles are financisl disasters. Tesla is not trustworthy regarding their claim about profitability. They lie about everything else at Tesla, so why trust that they magically became profitable even without subsidies and CARB EV credits? You should know that there are places in the US already (Massachusetts for one) where the cost to operate a gas truck isn't cheaper than running an electric truck. Tony Seba and Adam Dorr are wrong about solar continuing to cheapen to the point of becoming free energy. In fact, without net metering the solar market is currently crashing, and Chinese overcapacity has temporarily led to another race to the bottom that will bankrupt solar companies. I don't believe the free market is a viable tool in an existential Climate Crisis. We didn't end WW2 by selling people shiny toys and telling them they were good for road trips, though we did shift ALL of our domestic production towards the war effort. It's a sad analogy, because war wastes lives and resources for no good reason. But the point here is we're addressing an emergency with capitalism. This means we build and adopt the wrong products because consumerism is our cultural model. We need rationing, extreme conservation, radical shift in transportation use (rails and micromobility). Tariffs or no tariffs, full sized EV cars/SUVs/pickups are never going to work in zero emissions world. They are way too energy and resource intensive, which presently also means way too emissions intensive and too expensive.
You added a link to a quote from Elon Musk "calling for barriers". In fact, he did not call for barriers. He stated that most US automakers cannot compete with China, and that is true. He has not called for restrictions because he is aware that Tesla can, and does compete favorably with all automakers on a global stage. Tesla is currently a leader in China. It is interesting that you seem to be of the mind that our dependence on (mostly) foreign oil for passenger transportation is preferrable to driving on the readily available domestic (mostly) renewable energy which is available today. EVs are useless for rural folk, for people who haul/transport for a living, and are not eco-friendly in the slightest. For most Americans, they will cost more than you save because there is no resale value for used duracells, and tour insurance rates alone will offset your fuel savings. Same if you like to travel--public stations are no cheaper than gas when you factor in the extra times you have to stop due to low range. When you pay extra for tires that first time, you'll find yourself feeling some cognitive dissonance. Unless you're rich, of course, which is who these toys are built for. In other news...
It appears as if you are harboring obsolete information. Most of what you said is not true in 2024. You are correct that those who haul trailers more than a couple hundred miles probably don't have readily available EV options just yet. The other 97% of drivers will find an EV which gets the job done with better reliability at a lower cost. There are many brand new EVs offering 225-300 miles of range which lease for under $250/mo right now. We have listed them on this show and we invite you to learn from previous episodes. Most EV drivers charge at home and the cost per mile is a fraction of what a comparably sized gasoline powered vehicle would cost. The best selling EV in the world also happens to be the best selling car on earth. It is the Tesla Model Y and it currently sells for less than the cost of the average gasoline vehicle in America.
