The kitman replied that only number 9 was still available, so Boulahrouz picked it 'cause it was still a starting eleven number. He only later found out that the kitman made a mistake and that the number 2 shirt was still up for grabs 😂

But in Hasselbaink’s case he was a very strong striker with a strike that could take out a nation of 725k people, and very mobile. Most chelsea strikers after Ranieri weren’t mobile anymore.

just like u said at the end with all the different tatic changes and different managers it was hard to adapt that's probably why Tammy Abraham did so well since he came in from the academy and was young he was given a foundation of how to play under lampard instead of having to switch it up like many others did before him

You have to blame the scouts when it comes to striking 9s, Kezman was signed because his goal scoring record was better than Van Nistlerooy at PSV. Torres despite being a beast at Liverpool, after an injury looked a shadow of his former self just before his 50 mil move. Even Lukakus return, he had struggled for consistency at United and at the start of the summer before his 97 mil move made it pretty clear he didn't want to leave Italy and was forced out because inter needed money, why would you want a player who made it clear you were his backup plan?

Liverpool absolutely mugged us off selling him at the right time as they realised he wasn’t the same. But he scored that goal so his Chelsea history won’t be too unkind to him

The only thing cursed about Chelsea is midfielders thinking they have to be goalscorers. No coincidence Diego Costa flourished in the gap between Frank Lampard and Mason Mount. People talk down on Drogba’s legacy because he didn’t score enough goals, whole time he was sacrificing his game for mostly Lamps. Only at this football club is a midfield poacher so heavily valued, and it’s because the fans don’t know any better. Also partly why we aren’t revered for playing the best football. I’ll always be thankful for all the success we had in the Roman era and cherish it, but it’s time to move forward beyond our idea of football. Stop fantasizing about Mount being some sort of heir to a throne.

The Torres transfer to Chelsea was already doomed to fail from the start: Ever since his knee injuries in 2010 he'd never been the same and lost a lot of pace and agility, hence why his form had already started to dip during his last 6 months at LFC. Combine that with the terrible and borderline brain dead decision to have him debut vs. his former club knowing the psychological pressure it would cause him and the fact Chelsea's system didn't suit his playstyle AT ALL, and you had the perfect vicous cycle.

4:00 The team I support (Ferencváros in Hungary) had a CB with #7 and a forward with #3 at the same time a few yers ago. Neither of them played that much, the CB wasn't a solid starter to begin with and he missed like 2 years because of an injury and the forward was a 17yo who only played 9 games, 4 of them against lower divison teams in the cup.

you said exactly why they keep failing Strikers more than any other position are effected by different managers, under one you'll be expected to drop back and help defensively, under another you'll be expected to drop deep and link play being the provider more than the striker, under a third you'll be expected to stay forwards, yet under a 4th you'll be expected to hover between the lines, next to no striker can actually manage all these hugely different roles, they may excel at 2 of them, but if a manager comes in after a different one, out to dry they go whereas every other position can really get by under any system (ofc excluding say wingers if a manager comes in wanting to play a formation without wingers, but that's a complete different matter) because they'll generally be asked to do similar things, and if they don't fit the system, say if you wanna play out of the back but have a defender that sucks at it, you can accommodate, don't hit it to that defender when possible, play an extra defender, move the defence around to keep it unpredictable, etc etc, if you don't fit the system away from that Striker position you can get by

Chelsea doesn't play like they need the classical nr 9, that's why there are so many failed attempts to fill that shirt. Chelsea got a lot of goals from the midfield that's why they always spend so much money on midfielders. When Drogba played, he was there to get the ball, hold it, and wait for the rest of the team to come back him up. I had hoped that Lukaku would have been the same. Both are physically big players, but sadly it didn't work.

I maintain that Lukaku is a great striker. But he's a big personality, he needs to be loved or he can't do it. From day one he was being criticised for the past in England, not helped by Tuchel making the classic mistake if thinking he's a target man. He simply isn't. He needs to be able to run onto the ball, he's deceptively fast.

I’d like to point out that as a Chelsea fan the origin of the cursed shirt started with Chris Sutton. So I blame him😅

Kit numbers are one of my pet peeves too. I'm generally fine with it as long as outfielders don't wear the number 1, and goalkeepers don't wear the numbers 2-11 (Looking at you, Rui Patricio). But the numbers 7 and 9 being worn by non-attacking players also triggers me if it does happen.

The number 7 was an iconic for Manchester United because of one notable man: Cristiano Ronaldo. Since the departure, all Manchester United players who used the number 7 only scored a combined of 15-20 goals! This includes the Argentina stars Angel Di Maria. Even though Edinson Cavani seemingly lifted this curse by scoring 20 goals, CR7's return in 2021 only made things even worse. The Portuguese himself had his career being drastically changed. He often scored goals from penalty spot only, thus dubbing him as Penaldo or Pendu. Even his career with Al Nassr ended up in same result as Manchester United!

The problem with Chelsea is that we were always a good deff playing site. We've never been a great attacking threat this is something that we'be been struggling with since I can remember. I think that its just lack of attacking mentality combined with poor number 9's.

i think they should just give their new strikers a different number and give a rotational striker the 9. Like in the summer sell auba and lukaku then give the 9 to broja or fofana, then nkunku can take like 20 or something and who knows it might work
