This film wouldn't get near any list of "classics" but I love the whole atmosphere of it and have re-watched and enjoyed it many times. It's so incredibly British mixing Swinging 60s groovyness and a damp old country house with witchy goings on in the attic. And what a cast with Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Barbara Steele and Michael Gough.

Uk definitely owned the Horror genre in 60s and early 70s, the devil rides out and this are my favourites.

I love Michael gough.He had so many supporting roles in 1960s and 1970s horror movies,including dr terrors house of horrors, the skull,horror hospital, horrors of the black museum and satans slave to name a few.He revelled in playing mad doctor/scientist types(as in horror hospital) but I thought he was a very underrated and versatile actor RIP Michael

The external scenes from 11:04 onwards were filmed at The Grims Dyke Hotel in Old Redding. It was the home of W S Gilbert. I used to work there. It's a beautiful old house turned into a hotel but has some strange goings on and Weald Common, the woodland around it are very creepy in parts. There used to be a huge tree in the middle of the woods with rusty old chains hanging embedded into the branches about 15 to 20 feet up. W S Gilbert also kept monkeys and his favourite one is buried next to the lawn. In the film you can see the lake at 39:49, which is where W S Gilbert dived into to save a young girl who was drowning during a swimming lesson. He caught a chill and later died or had a heart attack. The details are a bit sketchy. He is said to haunt the place.

Yes I grew up not far from Grims Dyke. It’s a wonderful place to stay for a couple of nights if you can afford it. Deliciously creepy as you say. Sadly the lovely old pub down the country lane, ‘The Case Is Altered’ - which features in another classic from the same era - The Blood Beast Terror (starring Peter Cushing) - has just been forced to close permanently. Old Redding also features in the classic On The Buses episode ‘Foggy Night’

@@atavachronwemberley1744 I did read about The Case Is Altered being closed permanently. It's such a shame as it had a huge garden which was great in the summer. I wonder what will happen to the building. Maybe it will go the same way as The Railway Pub which used to be in Wealdstone. Burnt down by developers to build flats, allegedly. Do you remember the Middlesex and Herts Club? We used to go there after finishing work late at the Grims Dyke. I didn't know about the On The Buses episode. I'll look it up.

Excellent, I hadn't realised that, well spotted. Futtock's End (Ronnie Barker comedy) was also filmed at the Grims Dyke Hotel. I know the area very well from childhood/teenage years. Old Redding was a great place to play and a peaceful sanctuary. But as you say, there is a strange undercurrent both in the hotel and the surrounding woods, with quite a few unexplained sightings including on the Old Redding road. John Betjeman's 'Metroland' documentary from 1973 also features the hotel. . And I too remember the Middlesex and Herts club. My uncle was a bouncer and my best mate's brother used to DJ there. 'Middlesex and Tarts' it was affectionately known as at the time(!). . Good old days, eh?

You're not alone in thinking that but Christopher Lee had a lot of charisma and presence so it's unfair to expect anyone to compete with him.

I believe most people with agree with you and as paul said, Chris Lee and Vincent had unbeatable charisma, their sheer presence was majestic on screen, rare men have that thing in them. This young guy is good but not that good LOL

I revere the way that Boris Karoloff and Christopher Lee gave everything their best shot, with enough reverence and dignity for "Citizen Kane" or "Vertigo". And I'm so glad they did. It's Halloween; you're gathered round the late-night TV with a good kebab or a pizza and plenty of booze (ideally, you're all of you well lubricated already) - and films like this bring you just a little closer to Heaven. Next on the menu: "Pet Semetary", "The Atomic Brain" or even, "The Crawling Eye". And who knows: maybe next morning it was all a dream?

At this time Boris is in a lot of pain, but he's inside and outside in his chair..there is Christopher Lee talking about the great man🎬 I found most inlightning Mark Edan passed away in 2021, but im here for Christopher & Boris to people who never liked the word Horror to discribe what they do.... £5(around $9 Canadian) he put in the gas tank...probably gave him a half a tank too. If we were to do that nowadays the needle on the gas gauge would barely move!!

I may have misheard but I'm sure it was One pound 7 and 6 pence...gpp 1,37.5, which would be about right...I used to put a pound in my mgb and get half a tank in 1982

That is one crazy guy, settling scores on innocent descendants! Psycho at its extreme! Just like the wolf in the story of wolf, lamb and creek. "If it was not you then it was your father!" Good movie excluding the orgie that went on for 20 minutes, I jumped forward and enjoyed the remaining movie. The end was not there though!

I watched this the other day. I must say I was disappointed. I had assumed that Lavinia had somehow been reincarnated or resurrected and was an actual corporeal being. However she hardly appears apart from the odd dream sequence. Disappointing really as she's such an interesting and unusual character. Also for a horror movie it's not scary at all when you compare it to other British horror movies of the era.

meh ... gonna skip this one failed "test of time" for me, The Devil Rides Out (1968) with Lee looked way better and stood "test of time" way better in my humble opinion.
