Well said. I don't consider most of today's ]so called movies to be art. However some including black and white movies which are still made are very close to these classics particularly French, Italian and Spanish black and white films. I think about twenty to thirty black and white movies are still made a year in Europe.

Times move on, it is no longer a 'scary movie' but the pleasure of seeing these two great actresses giving such a wonderful performance, almost makes the plot secondary .Same with all the great actors, making their debuts in these classic films, who have gone on to be huge stars of stage and screen. Thank you for all these wonderful trips down memory lane.

There's a wonderful atmospheric creepiness to these old movies,..the music score adds menace and terror ,...and there's an art to making great horrors,...simple storytelling, along with great acting and clever use of sound ,.. And shadows on the visuals ......great stuff

Love the atmosphere and mood of these old British horrors,...with two real stalwarts of British stage and cinema playing the leads , the marvelous flora Robson and beryl Reid are the real highlight of the film with their verbal interactions and character eccentricities....theirs a real darkly charm and authenticity evident in these old movies, that sadly lack in modern day movie making.......

Good film. Thanks for posting. I've seen it several times. Its storyline and characterizations are similar to "The Shuttered Room" (1967) in many ways. Flora Robson, coincidentally enough, was prominently featured in that film as well. Both of the movies are horrifying and ultimately tragic. A beautiful transfer. Thanks again !

Medium lighting lets nature appear neutral in a film that explores a freak of nature within the landscape with a relaxing countryside vibe of the house that feels organic through the medium-low toned brown furniture and creamy yellow light tints of its interiors. However, the house hides a cellar like belly of the beast where the beast looms and escapes. This contrasts with the innocent looking ladies of the house who have lived here for decades since the war. The positive interior qualities and characters are pleasing and interesting to watch because they are last to be suspected.

Like... In Soviet Russia a deserter from the Red Army was hiding in his mother's house cellar for almost 30 years after the war. Mother fed him , but when she died he had to get out. The court took a pity of that half blind and half crazy men, fairly deciding that he had already served his imprisonment term. What a contrast to that Japanese soldier who did not know that the was was over and was hiding in the Philippines in the jungle also for 30 years. Hehe - during the WWII the Western ratio of POWs to killed servicemen was 1 to 3. The Japanese ratio was 1 to 130. Samurai.

8.5/10 A Very Interesting Take On The „Looked-Up Lunatic In Cellar“ Concept with „Jaws“-Type Build-Up Leaving Th’ Audience To Speculate As t' what exactly is/was killing those unfortunate Soldiers Or why for that matter. Personally, I first thought this was going to be another Werewolf Movie at first (not that I was completely off Point, given Stevens Attire) but was pleasantly surprised with a subversion of my expectations. Moi Also sees some similarities with „The Promise“ by Friedrich Dürrenmatt in how it ends, sorta
