Three years in since I started with MSQC, and I’ve fallen in love with Jenny, all over AGAIN! Thanks so very much Jenny! We sewist love you, & your enthusiasm. Amazing!
Although I am not new to sewing, I am new to quilting. I decided I wanted to try patchwork and quilting because when you sew, you make lots of scraps, and I thought of this (patchwork and quilting) as a way to use them up, instead of just throwing them away. Some of the leftover pieces of what I sew are big enough to cut squares and strips of fabric out of them, and that is what I have been doing for a while. Now that I have quite a bit of these, I wanted to use them in some creative way, and I have found these wonderful tutorials. Thank you for them! I am learning a lot, and enjoying a new craft.
Oh Jenny... this is beautiful! You started me sewing again back in October 2013, after not sewing at all for 10 years - and never before quilting. I've made so many of your beautiful quilts on my small Kenmore, broken-hearted because I can't quilt them. Well...... today, I purchased a brand new Janome-Artistic-AQ18"-Longarm-Quilting-Machine sit down machine! So when I see the beautiful quilt you are making now, I KNOW I'll be able make it --- and quilt it to. Thank you Jenny, and all the people of M* for enriching my life in so any ways.
Years ago i started with a log cabin as well. Did a crazy amount of pinning. Rotary cutters and rulers wheren't heard of. Jenny didn't appear on You-Tube which wasn't invented yet...really I don't miss the good old times AT ALL. Bless you nice People from MSQC
I know you've answered this already (I'm sure), and I hope you don't get upset repeating yourself, but you mentioned the red glasses in the video, and said there would be a link in the descriptions....I didn't see the link. If you have a video that shows you using them, or explaining the use of them, I'd love see it. Maybe someone can link me to it. I'm new to quilting (less than 2 years) and Jenny your videos alone are the reason I started! I watched you do a rag quilt, and your joy came through in the form of a constant smile, and I was hooked. If showing me how to quilt made you that happy, then I could only imagine how happy quilting would make me....and I was right! I'm hooked (or stitched?) now! Thanks so much, and please....never die! Like EVER! I can't imagine my life without my constant supply of your videos! :) Be blessed!
Whenever I feel a little lonely (thanks, COVID) I watch a Jenny tutorial. I always learn something new....today, I learned that log cabin blocks don't have to be painful. Thank you, Jenny all the way from Toronto.
Do you know half to make it as a table runner? I’m confused as to the layout! It list it as an option in the Block magazine but doesn’t show how to put it together?
Red and yellow were common for the center of a log cabin quilt, but blue was also used as a message to the underground railroad that this was a house they could stop at. Quilts were among the secret signals regular people wouldn't be looking for, but those "in the know" could take advantage of. Folks would see them hanging on the line "to dry" and know this house supported slaves' freedom.
Marialla - THANK YOU for the awesome note of blue in the days that the slaves would follow quilts to the next 'safe-house! I did NOT know & find that AWESOME! I'd love to know, oh! so much more.
We visited the museum in Cinn. OH a couple of years ago and they have a great area dedicated to the underground railroad and quilts. Unfortunately, even they said that there is no real proof that these quilts were really used in that way. It's a great thought that people would do this sort of thing, but, maybe it's just wishful thinking.
I was looking through the tutorials for my first quilt and came across the log cabin. I felt a little more confident when I found out that this was also Jenny's first quilt. I loved making it with her and learned a lot from my mistakes. It turned out great and I enjoy sitting under it while watching TV every night. Next up, flying geese.
Jenny, the log cabin look is what got me curious about quilting...i love hand piecing them!!!! This is so beautiful, thank you for sharing your skills and talents with us.
Thank you, Jenny! I made this quilt using the pattern in your Block magazine. It is the most beautiful quilt I have made to date. Learned so much by watching your videos.
I have ALWAYS wanted to make a Log Cabin Quilt, but have been off-put by how "difficult" it seems. Thank you for this tutorial!! The way you explained where to add the next strip makes so much sense!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Ron Bouchard well it's been three years since your comment Sir, were you able to finish your quilt? I sure hope you're on to your eighth by now! Just love her tutorials, so easy and inspiring too. Anyway, good luck to you, hope your quilt came out perfectly.
I just finished my curved log cabin quilt top. Whew! Jenny wasn't kidding about having to get the hang of laying that block out! But once I did, it went really fast! Thanks, Jenny, for a great tutorial that I must have watched 100 times this past week. LOL!
I just finished my first log cabin and I loved the versatility of getting to move the blocks around to create something different. Thanks for the great tutorial!
I got totally confused when I tried to make this block, however after watching the video about 8 times, I realized that you alternate adding small strips and then add a wider strip. I made 6 "curved" blocks before I finally got the hang of it. Thanks for the video.
Lavalle Nelson thanks for your answer on if Missouri Star Quilt Co. had a magazine. That curve log cabin is great and Jenny you are a great instructer.
This is the coolest thing!!!! Jenny...I just love your tutorials! I learned on the log cabin quilt about 20 years ago and made two and then quit because the rest were so complicated!!! Now I am starting to quilt again because of YOU!!! There are so many designs in my head now that it's hard to pick which one to make next! I made a quilted pillow for my 1 1/2 year old granddaughter from the exploding block tutorial and she carries it around with her because she loves it! A future quilter!!! Thank you so much for making quilting fun for me!
Wow! what a great Log Cabin variation! I love the beautiful red, greens & the white gives it that lovely antiquey Look, It makes the darker colors pop too which is interesting! I have seen lots of log cabin patterns but none of them really made me wanna run over to my machine to start one, until now :D I just love the way You have adapted these older patterns to the precuts & even eliminated the need to stand there cutting sets of strips in dif sizes! I live with severe chronic back pain so cutting fabric for long periods is challenging for me so Thank You! Also thank you for explaining about the Red or Yellow block in the center & how it represents the home: ) I really like that, Thanks for another great project Jenny, Your The Best!
Love it jenny! another winner in my book. I started with the rail fence and next came the log cabin. Such a great pattern to begin your journey. 1992 first quilt
I love this quilt idea! My grandmother collects antique spools and this would be such a sweet gift for her. Wonderful tutorial, keep up the great work!
I have one single baby due in Dec AND a set of triplets - THIS pattern, which I LOVE, inspires me to get my bum into the sewing chair and 'go great granny (GG), GO! I'm going to use flannel for the back - OR the cuddle fabric - cuz it is SO cold in Idaho in the winter. LOVE your instructions, again & again! Of course YOU are MY HERO.
I've never wanted to attack a log cabin due to keeping the cut pieces all straight. But this is genius to just chain piece them on to the strips - so great! Can't wait to try. I may start out with just a small-ish table runner or topper.
One of my favs also. Love your fabric you used in this one Jenny. I have a book of log cabin blocks and although I don't necessarily love them all the book has many I do love. Now you make me want to do a lot cabin again and I just can't keep up with you ! Lol
Jenny, I'm smitten by your talent and great enthusiasm. I love the fabrics you chose in this quilt. I must try it myself. Thank you so very much for making quilting enjoyable.
Jenny, you are a great teacher. I love this Log Cabin tutorial and all your videos. Your inspiration and easy to follow direction are very helpful. I have made your pinwheel tutorial and have the top finished, read to border. Thank you for your time in putting these videos together.
Instead of cutting the center squares BEFORE attaching to your first strip, I just sew the center STRIP to the 1st strip, 2 strips. Then I press open and cut the 2 1/2" units, all in one step.
Hi Jenny, once again you've wowed me!! I have a jelly roll (red, black and white) just waiting to be unrolled and now I know how to use it to its best advantage. If I only I had the time to make all your wonderful inspirations😊 Thanks again, Margaret from OZ
Darling quilt Jenny, you make me want to get my sewing machine out! If only I had the space for my quilting and paper crafting to be out at the same time in my room! Thank you so much for sharing this fun idea!
I wasn't going to watch this one. I thought this is way too hard for me. Just look at this gorgeous quilt! Looks so complicated. I'm so happy I watched it 'cause I want to make it! Gorgeous! Thank You! Pamela
That tutorial was log cabin block perfection!! I am SO going to try this after the 6, 10, 15 other (??) projects I need to complete, lol!! This is what I call OTL (ON THE LIST). Thanks Jenny & team!!
HI Jenny my name is Sonya and I have been ordering from y'all for over a year now. I will order fabric without having a purpose for it yet lol lol You know a girl can never have to big of a stash! I watch all the videos I simply love your personality cause it is very similar to my own. I have decided to make this one I love it and while watching it I had a thought( you will need to tell me if it is a good one or not cause I am self taught and pretty new to quilting) that the lapel stick would come in handy with the chain piecing by running a quick line down the strip that you are sewing the blocks to. It seems it would keep them in place till you can sew them and make it easier to place them close enough to only have to cut once to separate them. Much love in Jesus and many blessings to you and yours let me know what you think. I may just be having a blonde moment in regards to the whole idea lol lol not sure! ty happy quilting
love your tutorials. - truly. It gets me motivated to quilt- my only problem is jumping in there and starting one without someone to make it for. lol but did the flying geese and now onto another log cabin table runner. :)
Absolutely love the suggestion to chain the blocks as you go. That makes the idea of doing a log cabin quilt so much less daunting to me. Great video! :D
Jenny, you have ruined me! You told me to look up log cabin quilts and I have fallen in love with a really challenging block that I now cannot rest until I have recreated it! Curse you! xD
Jenny you have done it again! I just love love love this curved log cabin. I can't thank you enough for your tutorials!!! I will now make my 1st log cabin!!!
I'm with you - the first quilt I make too & also MY favorite. I've yet to make one with the honey buns so don't you think it's about time that I do? I've triplets & a single baby = 4 coming around Dec 31st. I cannot think of a better quilt to make for these babies, my GREAT grandchildren than this gorgeous one! Sew, petal to the metal & I'll meet you back here when you do your weekly 'show me how' tutorial - the BEST in the whole wide world. Have you ever counted to see how many FOREIGN people you have who watch your tuts? That'd be a FUN lil thing to do! HUGS to you today!
Can I ask Jenny, on the very first strip, would you ever just sew one jelly roll strip to one honey bun strip and then cut them 2.5? I do this and it saves messing about with that first little square! I love your tutorials! You are so enthusiastic! It's infectious! X
Unless you want that one additional square to be different in each log cabin block. I'm going to have all of mine different so will be cutting different variations of colored 2.5" squares to place on my center square colored strip, then cutting the strip apart.
This quilt block has been on my mind and I have been looking around online for a simple understandable example. Thanks I can follow these directions with minimal ripping and hair pulling. TIA(thanks in advance) for cutting out the weeds. Ive made several quilt tops, but yet to tackle the FMQ.
Awesome Thank you so much for your tutorial. I'm new so will be checking out log cabin designs as you suggested as well as placing order with you for jelly rolls and honey buns
Hi Jenny, Thank you for another great video. Love watching you! My first real quit was a log cabin, but I needed one on one to do it. You helped alot, will try it on my own😊.
I love the look of this but have to say I'm already confused about which side you add to :-) guess I'll have to watch this a zillion times haha but never fear Jenny's here.
Hi Jenny. I love watching you make all these beautiful quilts. It has also been very helpful for me when I'm making a quilt. When you are making a quilt with jelly rolls or layer cakes could you include how many yards that would be? Thank you
