Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Tree climbing is tricky for the kakapo, the world's heaviest and only flightless parrot.
Bill Bailey introduces a delightfully eccentric cast of creatures that have chosen to do things differently. Odd, unconventional and unusual - these are animals that don't normally grab the limelight. They include the parrot that has forgotten how to fly, the bear that has turned vegetarian, a chameleon that is barely bigger than an ant, and a penguin that lives in a forest. Nature's Misfits reveals the extraordinary and rarely seen lives of these evolutionary oddballs along with their strange habitats, unusual forms and the incredible hurdles they overcome.

The kakapo is NOT normal, even by nocturnal flightless bird standards. It breeds only once every five years or so under normal conditions, lives for over a century, climbs trees, has whiskers, has forgotten it has forgotten to fly (it will jump out of trees and parachute to the ground trying to fly), and has a bizarre breeding biology.

They're not literally up for adoption, it's basically just like a donation thing. You get some merchandise and a certificate, but you don't get them as pets. The site says right at the top that there's less than 150 Kakapo, there's no way they would have them available for adoption, that would be insane.

Evolution demanded that the best traits for an island with few predators was to redirect energy from flying to nocturnal traits and breed slowly to prevent overgrazing the food supplies. For everybody loving our kakapo (night parrot) thought you'd like to know, they have their own special smell. Kakapos have kind of a musty smell, especially when they drop their feathers. Biologist Jim Briskie of Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand, told National Geographic that kakaopo smell like "musty violin cases." Others have said that kakapos smell kind of pleasant and even sweet. TerraNature describes them as "sweet smelling like honey or flower-like." Having such a distinctive smell makes it easier for the birds to find each other. But that's why it's so easy for predators to find them too.

For everybody who wants one as a pet, there's something that the video doesn't mention: they reportedly give off a very pleasant aroma.
