As he mentioned, Charlotte's Web. Also I seemed to recall Disney making movies such as the Lion King and the Land Before Time. Uh-oh, nobody in these movies looks like me! Me me me...
Yep. Agree 100% with Chris. I thought in the 90s/2000s we were getting to the point of colour blindness, and that was supposed to bethe goal, where race doesn't matter. Now we obsess over it. Now we have fanatic swarms who confidently say out loud that they think they should fight racism with racism in the opposite direction. Saying it's not possible to BE racist to the demographic they're throwing hate at, which is utterly ludicrous and showcases the level of zealotry and lack of rationality. You don't fight hate with more hate ...reality doesn't work that way.
Gallup polls showed, as late as 2014, that most Americans didn’t think racism and sexism were serious problems in day to day life. That they were largely “defeated” and going away. Then over the next few years the numbers skewed asymptotically the other way. Why? In 2012 smart phones exploded. With it the emergence of the clock-bait ad revenue model exploded. Incendiary titles drive clicks and engagement. These misanthropies - aren’t real problems …. We’re just told they are all day everyday day. So now (particularly the most online people) think they’re the biggest threats we face.
Grouping people into boxes like "minorities" and "people of color" is one of the most evil things humanity has ever done. The practitioners of DEi LOVE intersectionality, but they stop at the surface-level characteristics - what color you are, who you sleep with, et cetera, and they fail to recognize that the MOST "intersectional" delineation you can have is a SINGLE, INDIVIDUAL PERSON.
“People of colour” also groups ALL the diverse and desperate (and often incompatible) cultures of planet Earth together, which makes them seem like a homogenous blob. Same goes for white people, come to think of it. What does a Frenchman have to do with a Russian or a Dane? Their skin tone is similar..? The whole point is to create as massive a political bloc as possible to pit against whites. It couldn’t be more nakedly obvious.
Funny thing is. There are no whites or blacks. Just all one human race of all shades of brown - pale to dark with tones of pink, red, and yellow. The left tries to divide groups of people when we all really are just one group of people with different likes and dislikes of how we want to live life.
As a white 40 something IT consultant I am fairly certain I don't ever want to watch a movie where the main protagonist is not a white 40 something IT consultant ever again 😂😂😂
Equality is great, but this obsession with equity (quotas of race, sex, sexuality etc) is ludicrous and utterly unsustainable. By all means, give people who deserve it a leg up, but the key word is deserve. Despite health problems I saved up my own money over years to go to university. After being at university for a few years I qualified for a small scholarship to help pay for my tuition because I had severe health issues AND my grades were high. I didn't just get it because I had a disability. I managed to show I had potential in the first place. That's how equity should work. You don't just randomly take gambles on anyone simply because they're from a minority demographic. Setting this quota to such a high amount is insane!
Exactly, well said. And congrats on all your hard work and accomplishments. I hope you continue to succeed and push yourself toward your goals. That's what it is all about.
Equality needs to be based on meritocracy. Unfortunately the racism and sexism of DEI equity means you take jobs from those who merit and hand them to those that fit “the message”.
@@Ol-T1864 Hollywood is well known for nepotism, but it's still had modicum talent & merit to succeed back in the day. All the nepostism, but now lacking talent & merit. It's got to collapse sooner than later & nothing of value was lost. They ruined most of the big brand IP's & franchises with poorly made knockoffs.
A lot of people don't understand the value of hard work. Studies have shown that when people work to earn something, they value that thing more than if they were just given it. (I think there were several studies, one was on cars. People who participated in earning a car through work, got a lower priced/quality car, but reported high satisfaction with it, while people who won a car via lottery got a higher priced/quality car than the work group, but were overall less satisfied with it.) Just handing people degrees, scholarships, or job opportunities doesn't equate to success, and they (most likely) won't give their best to that endeavor.
I'm a 27 year old woman who graduated from an animation program for film and then another animation program for video game design. I haven't broken into the industry yet. However, all these DEI pushes and these women making a big stink and movement for 50/50 in the workforce is going to do more damage than good. I've already heard from other male animators and designers that they are hesitant to work with or around women in fear of being canceled or fired or having a hard time. I just want to work and make great content for the masses, and do it based on my merit and skill, not on my sex. I want to bring something to the team and have a good time with them without having to walk on eggshells. Bring back hiring based on skill.
@FilmThreat thank you! And yes, I have started looking for work. However, I've been in a sort of limbo state for about a year due to developing hand issues from my program, but thanks to my physio, I feel more confident in applying to specific jobs in the industry. I'm hoping to rebuild my portfolio as soon as I can repair my computer, lol.
i already see myself in the miror every morning. I don’T need to see myself. I do however need to see a world that makes sense and represents facets of life.
Glad to hear someone else say it because it’s true. The quality of nearly everything is so much worse than it used to be, whether that’s services or products. Vintage everything is now the way to go.
Isn’t it incredible? We were just talking about this. In the last few weeks I’ve seen failures from a new oven (already repaired four times), a sewer system, a furnace, a tv sound system, three expensive kitchen utensils, a desktop, about twenty online platforms apps and accounts some bathroom fixtures and that’s off the top of my head. If you read about China there’s a movement among young people of just giving up, it’s called lie down but I forget the Chinese term. It’s about people who realize they can’t even affect anything about the quality of their lives so why bother. I think huge numbers of people feel this way and it’s directly related to failing art, sciences, manufacturing, and service. There’s just a wall of huge corporations that don’t need to actually deliver anything to you or care that you exist whether you’re a worker or a consumer because they get paid corruptly no matter what.
Meh. I don't dare about that. Because they proved it false. No one wants their deaf, disabled, afro centric, indigenous immigrant narrative mediocre tripe.
If you ever saw anything from Keri Smith, you’ll see she describes it exactly like that, except instead of a single figure leading it all, it’s an ideal that governs it all.
You hit the nail on the head. It's very much revenge. Only I've been calling it continuing the cycle of abuse. Whether someone has been wronged or they perceive themselves and others as wronged. They, like someone who has been abused. Need to make someone else feel what they felt. "It's your turn." It doesn't matter that you've done nothing wrong to that specific person, or even someone they know. Because now they have the weapons of original sin, community sin, and inherited sin. You were born (insert traight), you carry the blame of others like you, and your ancestors did a thing that you must self flagellate to atone for.
Disney has worked hard to fall this far, they had to come up with bad stories, approve the different treatments and ignore any advice that urged them to proceed carefully. That saw and continue to see every aspect of their entertainment companies through DEI colored glasses.
You know, the thing that sucks the most about this whole thing, is that you had a guy who had a dream to bring magic to kids and families, succeeded in that dream, only to have the whole thing stolen by greedy pieces of shit, who drove it into the ground. It’s not a good thing that Disney is dying. It’s actually pretty sad.
The IGN review said Raya was a classic, but its main criticism was the film not having enough voice actors from the South East Asian landscape to represent all the characters and thus the entire South East Asian area. An area with dozens, if not hundreds of cultures - and tribes - and this IGN critic complained they didn't hire enough of them for one film with only a handful of characters. IGN: International Goober Network
tbf i found raya to be offensive. coz if it was very odd that they were so hung up on proper representation and they had a vietnamese actress play the main character who was obviously indonesian...so once again fucking hollywood in their token representation acts like all asians are a monolith. just like how they treat latinos.
They gave The Marvels a high score. Pretty much irredeemable at this point. Everyone knows now they get bribed with special access and potential future opportunities for the IGN staff to give everything that's Disney a good review.
There seems like an opportunity here. Collect the best, regardless of immutable characteristics, relocate outside the United States to a place where these racist policies dont apply. Make movies. Sell them into the US.
You don't need to relocate. Just gather up all the talented people who have been pushed out of major studios for not being diverse enough. You can run the company in the US and just accept the reality that your films will be ignored by DEI-controlled award shows. The other studios might get the awards, but if you have the most talented people you'll sell the most tickets in the cinemas. Look at Hogwart's Legacy. It totally got snubbed by the game awards, the woke mobs tried to boycott the game, it ended up being the second best-selling game of the year, just behind Baldur's Gate 3.
@@blinkonceonsunday1325 That’s what Skydance has done. They snapped up John Lassiter when Disney gave him the boot, and many of the actually talented legacy artists at Disney and Pixar followed him over there. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. Disney could do with more competition, especially from someone they so recklessly and disrespectfully discarded.
Creativity's taken a backseat to politics. Mavericks with real storytelling chops built Hollywood. Now it's being torn down by ideologues. Sign of the times.
Never let your business have an HR department. Never let an ideological group push hiring changes just to get them to shut up. Gatekeep your business and hobby against people who want to twist it into something else for their own ends.
@@FilmThreat exactly. They also don't attempt to correct problems and get people to treat each other better, they smooth things over and tend to push the complainer out instead of the people causing the complaints. Ask me how I know.
Also, animators used to have agency in how animation is planned, etc., it is now middle managers that have zero animation experience doing this job. That is why we have seen a quality drop in animation. It is actually hilarious to watch them attempt to act out something, when they have no clue what is important to show. Also, they have zero drawing skills, much less animation drawing skills, so they’re confused attempt just comes off as unintentional comedy. And the micromanaging is at a all time high…
I've seen courses just on acting _for_ animators. It's a big deal and the idea that you can separate development of the 'performance' from the animator is absurd.
The Numbers has Raya's box office gross worldwide at $116 million, while BoxofficeMojo has it at $130 million. Regardless, that's a flop from a $100+million budget.
When Bob Iger refused to gracefully bow out of the CEO position and returned before he could be missed, I knew he would reside over the collapse and eventual death of Disney. This will be his actual legacy, a total fail. Let go of the shower in your office Bob, pack It up, move on out.
"... animation is going to go overseas and AI..." It's already happening. You have to remember that compared to most art forms, animation has ALWAYS been an expensive and technically demanding form of entertainment. The suits always go where the money is and to where they can save a few bucks. AI has both!
You don't have to see yourself, it’s ridiculous. I have loved characters that are goblins, dogs, male, female, old, young, any colour, race. It is so sad how much talent will be sacrificed in this era.
If you have a group that can't be critiqued in any manner, then there's no filter for bad ideas, and bad ideas will dominate everything. It's going to get worse before it gets better.
The number of fields of Disney's doing it's obvious they're not only just bleeding money they're hemorrhaging it worse than the gorious slasher flick ever
Hayao Miyazaki pretty much hates most of modern humanity and has famously said that anime was a mistake, and yet The Boy and The Heron released to near universal acclaim i just think that that's worth noting in the context of Disney's decline
Another video I’ll save to send to someone of why I didn’t further myself into animation like I had hoped to. Perfectly you guys have your fingers on the pulse, the self destructive concept of forcing characters to be of a minority at the expense of the story while saying it is to help those who are said to not get represented get to have a character they can connect to. This lacks the depth of the character’s qualities that is important to have ANYONE to connect to, I can’t tell you the amount of times I sympathize with a character that is not white nor a woman, because the characters are engaging. Disney has managed to even mess up their recent animal stories like the stupid remakes such as the Lion King. And your description of how hostile the activists have become to those who don’t follow their agenda defines exactly why those who have the talent, or are eager to learn from those with experience whether they are “pale, male, stale” or of a different category, it’s left a lot of us who had our dream of being part of the Walt Disney studios are crushed. Once nice again thank you guys so much for bringing this to light, the irony is that those activists say we need to use our voice yet they are the ones who are taking away our spirits for their chance for domination.
Diversity goals started w/ noble intentions; I think most people would agree that a world in which opportunities are available to everyone = a "good thing" What Dizney (and many others) seem to have forgotten is that being given that *opportunity* is just a FIRST step - it's not the end goal! These folks then need to actually CREATE something great for their projects to succeed. But modern Hollywood wants to jump past the difficult part, and simply collect the praise/$$$
"You can finish reading the article" er I can't for some reason when I click on the article I get the usual cookie pop up, and no matter whether I click accept or reject on it, the pop up will not go away leaving me unable to read the article or scroll up and down..
More like "male and pale won't fail." Calling what works "stale" is like saying one doesn't want to eat food anymore because its production is somehow politically incorrect.
It doesn’t matter that their initiatives have failed. As far as they’re concerned, they’re doing great. And with BlackRock, theHR departments, and the upper echelons of most corporations to back them up, don’t look for any changes in the immediate future - and as GenZ takes over, not the far future either.
Disney, the REAL Disney, no longer exists. It hasn't existed for a long, long time. The fact that the Disney name and company logo continues to be plastered on movies and merchandise doesn't mean anything. Everything that made Disney what it was is no longer around. The talent, imagination, creative choices, values, ethos, style, character and film making methods that went into their work is long gone. It's Disney by name only.
People who MUST see themselves in the main character(s). These are the same people who only hire in their image. I've hired people who were nothing like me. People I knew we'd never be friends outside of work. People who had vastly different experiences in life and work. I don't need another me validating any of my (potentially bad) ideas. I need someone to is going to force me to look at solutions from another perspective I would not have considered. This is lost at so many levels now.
I remember that Raya and the Last Dragon came out and it made little impact even on Disney Plus. I said it at the time but I felt that Raya was going to be the canary in the coal mine to Disney's downfall. I am actually shocked I was more on the ball with that than even I realized. It seems to be that was the movie where everything started to go wrong.
@@mr.raslyon6626 NOt even close, with Frozen you have to look at merch sales too, and those are probably the highest of any animed film with the only other possible exceptin being Cars.
As a lowly prod coordinator working at Warner Bros...I get the feeling that I won't be able to move on as an artist or even higher up on the production ladder because I'm white, even though I'm female. I have no hard evidence but I've only ever seen my female poc coworkers move up and forward while the rest of us are bypassed. I'm 100% looking for other jobs for when the project I'm on ends this spring. Which...is sad because I LOVE animation and I always will, and I feel like even I'm being ousted or at least left behind even though I have all of the skills everyone else does. Its a tough time for a young person in animation right now. And all that not even to mention that nothing is being green-lit right now so every single job pool is drastically shrinking.
"Diversity problem"? The Diversity problem was creating successful movies and making billions for the company. Now the Diversity problem is fixed, the shitty movies, and gigantic losses are stacking up... At least they fixed the Diversity problem though. That's good, right?
There wasn't even a diversity problem, plenty of them gained their niches. We just weren't fixing them FAST enough and more importantly, in a way a single group could claim credit. Goodbye past progress but hey, glad they have their priorities right?
Last sentence was the most important- it’s all going to AI and overseas. The executives have no choice; the long tradition of developing your talent being mentored by experienced masters of the craft has been broken for at least a generation.
I grew up near Disney world and grew up going there often and loving so much of their content . I’m a dreaded white man tho .. old school liberal, gay. Seeing Disney hijacked by these alphabet people and experiencing more and more casual racism directed at white men.. It’s just very strange. Then you factor in the butchering of Star Wars and mcu and it’s really quite strange I think something much deeper and ultimately more nefarious is under way .. seems a concerted effort to undermine USA culture while sowing more and more division I suspect it’s ultimately to push more Marxist revolution misery but so many are becoming pawns without even seeing it as the shriek about racism or gender nonsense
Yes. Marxism was economic, but that premise failed as a lower percentage of people are in poverty now than at any point in human history. Capitalism won. So they had to find some other type of class struggle to divide and conquer us.
@@DDGLJ it’s just so upsetting. Feels like cultural sabotage and it’s clearly on purpose. I’m pissed as a fan that all my favorites are insultingly bad now but feel with so much hate and division being down as ‘progress’.. getting do ugly and miss when Disney was about bringing people together with wholesome, timeless quality ..
@@IstariAzul777 I’m just grateful Disney was at its peak when my kids were young. Now, as young adults, I can’t even get them to go back by bribing them with a free trip. They tell me it’s just not the same anymore. So sad.
Its funny, I listening to a woke woman at university talk about her plans to get more women into STEM. She had this bizarre belief that "old white men and their way of thinking" needed the diversity of thought from women and POC. A colleague and I "mansplained" to her all of the women in STEM share more in common with those old white men than her. We also tried to get her to explain what that diversity can offer that men haven't, and why those diverse minds haven't struck out on their own to make new discoveries. This pissed her off. Lol.
We warned Disney (specifically) for years about indulging too deeply in social science struggle sessions but they would not listen. Reap. What. You. Sow.
I feel the need to play devils advocate and say that empathy isn’t always required for a person to enjoy a fictional character in entertainment. I’m a woman who enjoy’s a certain antihero villainous character in a manga, just because he makes me laugh, and does have some good points in the fictional narrative that being born into a position where you can’t contribute towards betterment of an environment should be a sign it’s time to reinvent one’s self. Go for other opportunities, rather than just settling. I will admit his looks and personally are completely different than mine, lol! None of that matters to me, yet I still love him! That character inspires me to get into fiction writing. All of this would completely not be understood by these people who believe a fictional character is only relevant if they are a literal copy of a real world person in every way. Fictional characters for them are basicly self-promoting avatars. Nothing more.
I typically identify and get emotionally attached to non-human characters. When I watched Creature from the Black Lagoon, I identified with the GIll-Man When I watched Star Wars a kid, my favorites were Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3P0, Yoda. My first Star Trek movie was Wrath of Khan, and Spock (the half human/half vulcan) was my favorite character. When I watched the old horror movies of the 30s and 40s, I sided with and felt sorry for the Frankenstein Monster and the Wolfman (technically the only straight white male I've mentioned so far). And when I watched Godzilla movies, I was on Godzilla's side before they turned him face. Loved him. I don't know what this says on my stance on humanity, but I never needed the characters I loved to look like me to enjoy them.
I'd love to read a book on this. DEI and woke ideology has infiltrated all of corporate america. I'm an engineer for an aerospace company and I have to do compliance training where I get lecture on DEI and feminism, etc.
Oh no. It's infected probably everything except construction. Of course aviation is making headlines now... And what is scary is the DIE policies have only just recently started
Is someone big shorting Disney? Is that what? This is all about a long-term short position. So now they're going to crash Disney with ridiculous hiring?
I hope The Daily Wire and other NON-DISNEY COMPANIES snatch up those experienced talented people and start creating gold in other places. It's like having MAGICAL DWARFS working for you and replacing them all with inexperienced ogres. YOUR CREATION IS GOING TO SUFFER! You can't expect to replace a MAGICAL DWARF and not expect a drop in quality. AND YOU CHOSE TO REPLACE THEM WITH OGRES?! GOOD LUCK!
@@valyria-rd2tt it’s where movements go to die. To put it bluntly. Also there would have been a mass attempt to push him out years ago if Roy E. Disney was still alive.
the same kind of thing is happening in the medical industry......doctors with decades of practical experience and the "figuring out" how to treat certain things that aren't taught in medical school are all retiring because computerization has eliminated the ability of older doctors to write in the margins of the paperwork.....its all computerized now and so none of the "tricks of the trade" are being learned by young doctors who are new. My father and all his doctor friends all retired when this started to happen. All that experience lost.....not passed on to the next generation.
