VS if Stephen doesn't want to have a discussion with Antony, you might want to try Richard Von Donk. Richard still teaches some ninjutsu in his curriculum. From what I know of Hayes, he moved away from teaching actual ninjutsu. Meaning, the outdoor stealth & camouflage type stuff. Donk still does that. & Stephen, if you read this, I'm not saying taijutsu isn't a ninja martial art. I'm just referring to what's taught in the historical manuals. I think Antony likes to emphasize the point that both samurai & shinobi learned the same martial art. I would think, that shinobi focused more on striking techniques though. I don't think a shinobi would of wanted to spend too much time tied up in a grappling situation, if they're trying to make an escape. A lot of the techniques that are in taijutsu, might be exclusive to shinobi/ninja. Maybe they just didn't write them down in a manual. I don't think Takamatsu made up the entire Bujinkan curriculum either. He might of added some of his own stuff, but most of it is probably historical. VS I appreciated the interview with the legendary American ninja.
Stephen makes an average person realize we dont live much..we just stroll along..He's done a lot and been all over the world. AND he was a part of my childhood and I never knew it.
The first martial arts book I ever bought was Ninjustsu The Art of the Invisible Warrior. Never knew at the time that Stephen only lived an hour away from me. Love to train with him someday.
I was attending a Dharma talk by a visiting Rinpoche at the Columbus Tibetan Buddhist Temple back sometime around 1990 (I think) and as I was walking to the front door the limo pulls up in front of the door and the driver gets out and opens the door for the Rinpoche and escorts him to the door where the resident Temple people are waiting to greet him. The driver waits at the door, and as I approach I recognize him. He says "hello" to me and I say, "Hi, hey, I know you. You are Stephen Hayes!" and with a grin he says, "shhhh. Don't tell anyone." He was initially a little reluctant to talk. I think he was afraid I was going to pester him about Ninja technique, but after he decided I was more interested in discussing Tibetan and Zen Buddhism, Japanese culture, traveling in Asia, etc. we had a nice discussion. Great guy!
I remember the stories in the 80’s about Stephen Hayes calmly convincing potential wrongdoers to let him be! Strength in calmness at its best! Great interview series.

My respect for Stephen Hayes, is a goog teacher, I have the books, and the magazine "NINJA", I want someday training with him, I start my training in boxing, karate and kung Fu from 11 old years , when I have 16, I start my traning in Jiujitsu, I'm buy my first Ninja magazine in 1987, I never training Ninjutsu, but I respect this art and the others all arts in the world. This was truly great and enjoyable...Thanks Viking...I had a book by Mr Hayse back in the 90's and he always seemed the most authentic of the "neenja" instructors producing material and teachings around that period of interest in neenjitsu for me...I even owned all the kit at one point, including shurikens and board, sword with assorted survival kit inserted into the scabbard and hilt of the sword, including compass, fishing tackle, lol, poison bottle and detachable shuriken...you could also use the cord on the sword for either survival or combat etc...I had this on the wall, next to my Rambo survival knife, replete with all the trimmings, compound pully bow, samurai swords, assorted throwing knives and nestled on the book shelf below them, my SAS survival handbook...LOL...They were the days...My favorite film in the mid 80's was Sho Kasugi's Revenge Of The Neenja which I watched over and over, along with Loan Wolf McQuade, before I discovered Mr Van Damme from seeing No Retreat No Surrender at the cinema and became a complete van Damme fan...I was soooo disappointed with Black Eagle when it came out, as it had my two favorite on screen martial artists of the time in one movie but as much as I tried, I could not like the movie...Thanks Viking and could you ever get Sho on your show??? PS...Remember folks..."Only ah Neeenjah, can beat another Neeenjah..." Sho Kasugi's famous words from Revenge Of The Ninja...;-)) PPS...I forgot to mention something really important here...You could also use the scabbard of my neenjah sword as a snorkel for breathing while hiding under water...i would not have been able to sleep if I had missed that important information out...Thanks again...Oh...One more thing..."Nin...Rin...Retsu...Rhyu..."...LOL...
Stephen k hayes was smiling originally on the black belt magazines doing a move. and the illustrator said why are you smiling we dont want you to smile you have to look mean lol so he did what they said, his answer first was why not im winning lol also he's absolutely right about letting go of ego
People usually mentionBruce Lee or The Gracie’s when talking about impact. But it isn’t hyperbole to say Stephen K Hayes in one of the 10 most influential martial artists of the past 100 years .
This guy's life sounds like that of the luckiest character from an adventure novel. It sounds like he really didn't have to put up with any of the "normal" drudgery or difficulty of life.

what i love about toshindo is its, so effective and your learning practical street self defence to start with your using your voice as, a, weapon your hands are up etc theres to much to go into and so many elements, earth wind fire void so different breathing different style . Before you start class we bow line up heading the shrine like that in the background anshu hayes has got in his dojo and read out 16 points or 17 depends what rank of the mindful action like i am, confident i beleive in myself i can accomplis my goals i believe in what i study iam disciplined im ready to learn and advance etc then we say pls, teach us in japanese. ty for sharing!
Get Robert Bussey on some time to talk about ninjitsu. Or, Jack Hoban. Hoban was a former Marine that trained ninjitsu in Japan as well and was one of the subject matter experts when the Marine Corps was standing up its combatives program in the early 2000s. He still lectures for them at Quantico from time to time.
@@nrtnrt6676 I always like Robert Bussey’s material. Last I saw (years ago now) he got away from the “pure” ninja stuff like Hayes did a few years ago and had a really robust reality based self defense curriculum that looked like good stuff.
@@williamsmith8790i was fortunate enough to stay at his house and train with him for a couple of weeks. He told me some interesting stories about his time bodyguarding.
A good series of conversations, pity that you didnt talk about his real ninja training in depth, like assassin training, fitness training and mind training etc, at what level does he stop training american students, I doubt he would go into assassination techniques. The reason im asking is because ninja are assassins by training so there will be alot of techniques that will be lost in his version of ninjitsu that he teaches. Did he learn any assassin techniques in his training and what did his training involve? Would have been nice to know.

This is more on-topic: a more recent Power Rangers season was released in 2016 and was titled ‘ Power Rangers ninja steel’. The history behind that show is: Centuries ago, the ruthless feudal warlord Gengetsu Kibaoni was slain by the Igasaki Ninja clan, before discarding his humanity to become a Yokai. In it, Jason David Frank plays all of his power rangers when he fights the evil Tommy Oliver.
Stephen Hayes seems to be a real nice guy and I dont want to be disrespectful, but is his fame really legitimate? I mean, is there any proof of his fighting capabilities, like in a competition or something else?
Stephen Hayes is totally a badass and has the bona fide pedigree to back up his claims. And yes, I agree with his quote about "there is no bad student, but bad teachers" the same way that there are no bad employees but bad managers that have no clue how to take care of their staff properly for them to care about their place of employment. I remember when I was about 14 and I was learning geometry, my teacher was a complete asshole. Lets say, I didn't learn a thing from him and flunked geometry a few times, thanks to his teaching and lack of patience. The only way I passed geometry was taking the class at night school, and did it by the skin of my teeth. Fast forward 15 years later and I decide to go to college, but I had to take basic math, which included geometry as a course, because of the long timespan from when I graduated. I was scared that I would flunk geometry and there goes my chances of getting my degree. Nevertheless, I went to class and the teacher who taught basic math w/geometry was a small pakistani gentleman by the name of Mr. Rahimi. When he was giving the lecture and he called my name, I told him "dont bother w/me. I'm dumb at geometry". He looked at me and said "Enrique (yeah, thats my name), if you believe you're bad at something all your life, you will always be bad at it". He insisted I approach the white board, he then explained to me the problem, how to solve it and then, like a light bulb in my mind lit up. I started doing one more problem on the board, and when he gave me the compliment of a job well done, I barged to the restroom, locked myself in one of the stalls, and balled like a child. I couldn't believe that I actually understood geometry!!! Needless to say, I passed his class with an A, moved on to business math, graduated from that college w/an associate of arta, moved to the university and 2 years later, got my bachelor science in business management w/an emphasis in accounting, which is the career I've had since 2008. And I owe to Mr. Rahimi for believing in me. I am not sure if he's still alive, because it's been a long time, and I believe he was already close to 70 when I met him. But if he's out there, I would like to say thank you to him for teaching me to believe in myself. Once again, thank you for another inspirational video. And to Stephen Hayes, thank you for sharing your story. You have no idea how much I've learned from you and your life story.

I remember seeing a video where Seagal was telling a story about one of his navy seal encounters but he didn't notice that the guy whose story it really was, was in the same room and said look Steven i told that too you last week 🤔 🤪😂 It must have been really Embarrassing for stevie 😅
Im studying toshindo and have been for 6 years or so, but i grew up wanting to be like steven seagal at first and i went to aikido and kung fu classes etc even thai boxing, because of the magazines and my brother doing tht etc and the movie the quest, before that had influence on me But bruce lee was quick and nimble and seagal was just different as , well but steven seagal got me into martial arts. Nico, hard to kill etc just blew me away the realism his persona never anything like that i seen in films and enter the dragon still a really good film ty for sharing

Just finished this set of videos. Man they are great Stephen Hayes is such a cool guy. I hate how people hate on him. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s he was a real part of my childhood. I had his books and loved his stories in black belt magazine. After watching these videos I checked him out online he has a online course TO-SHIN DO. I paid my membership and am going to try it out. I always love new things I hope to get Stephen to come to my school some time. I know everyone would love it. No matter what people say you can learn something from every new style you check out. I love your channel it’s so crazy that Bloodsport got us both into martial arts but when I saw Jeff Speakman in the Perfect Weapon I started Kenpo. I never looked back now with Kenpo 5.0 and BJJ. Keep up the great work your channel really does bring back so many found memories of my childhood with your videos. At class we talk about and discuss your videos.
@@VikingSamurai yeah I checked it out and signed up for his online course. I love Kenpo 5.0 and BJJ but I think we can learn something from all forms. I at least really want to try it out.
@@VikingSamurai man I just watched The Secret Man Interview part 1&2 on RU-vid with Frank Dux. You have to watch it he sounds nuts basically his grandfather was responsible in WW1 for Churchill to resign. Man you just have to watch it. That would be a great breakdown and maybe some things to talk to him about. To me it sounds crazy but you know him. I would love for you to watch it and break it down. Like you did his showtime documentary. Keep up the great work. I got all my students at school subscribing and watching your channel.
In the 80s nobody knew what worked in the martial arts so people in the government would hear about whatever famous martial artists and then give them a contract to teach some lessons and seminars with military and government types. You should also interview Paul Vunak who trained Navy SEALS. He also knew Dan Inosanto and trains under him. Wether or not the martial arts teachers were legit or taught anything good is up for debate.
Viking -- I have just seen an old screen pic of a movie theatre from 1988 somewhere in the states when Rambo 3 was released. The following films were showing at the same time: Screen 1: Rambo 3, Screen 2: Salsa, Screen 3: Maniac Cop, Screen 4: Blood Kick , Screen 5: Blood Sport . Haaa. What a choice: Rambo 3 and Blood Sport showing at the same time. I haven't heard of the others. Amazing times.
Stephen k hayes changed the bujinkan martial arts because no one would fight like that anymore he kept the same priciples but updated it. Back then they were fighting with armour in the 1500s so it looks, slow and rigid and the japanese were small. so basically he changed it to fit with the 21st century you know. Nowadays no one fights like anymore lol. so imagine your in a pub this guy starts on you, you tell him im not interested ive upset everyone today im leaving your hands are up, as a defensive position palms up, and he throws a haymaker and you defend yourself. Someone calls the police about a fight. The police arrive and asks witnesses what happened, well his hands were up he said he didnt want to fight and to back away now ! so the guy didnt listen and the guy threw the first punch and he defended himself . Another scenario People think we run around with ninja, stars imagine a trained military guy and a ninja both having to do the same mission to take someone out. And there getting packed and ready with there weapons and before they go, the ninja turns around to the military guy and says whats, tht your holding? o its, called a gun.... O ok? what does it do? well it fires bullets... Bullets? it has a sight you can zoom in and this model is called a sniper rifle it can shoot this many yards away and its silenced .. O ok well ill have tht then instead
This guy gets respect but yet frank duc is nuts or Steve Seagal and Seagal and his place in Japan and if you watch that form of ninja doesn't go over good in MMA but some could've have lived and done things in their life's that seem unreal so to think that our country didn't have says that was killers their job is to get in take care of target get out like nothing happen
There may be a script I wrote with a good friend, there may be a ninja character in it, Stephen may be interested and open to being the "technical advisor" lol... I can't say more, but the ninja character doesn't have the biggest part, but there's great spinoff potential for that character to be the lead in a separate film. We'll see what the future holds!
Hey Samurai Viking guy did you know Sylvester Stallone provided the voice of Paul Revere in the episode ‘Midnight Ride’ (2002) and Arnold Schwarzenegger played as Baron von Steuben in ‘Liberty Kids’. I was thinking before that cartoons are a great tool for teaching kids history and stuff and they really remember it because when I was In elementary school I loved Hysteria! and I learned so much. Now I’m learning about this other cartoon, which I’ve heard of before maybe only one time but it’s not historical. The episode about Paul revere is not historical because Paul revere actually says something else than what they say in the cartoon.
Sylvester Stallone’s voice is so iconic I was thinking there’s no way there’s another person who sounds just like Sylvester Stallone. But I’ve also heard Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice in cartoons and it never dawned on me that it could be the actual Arnold or Sly Stallone, so I had to duck duck go it. I don’t use google
Ninjutsu would not be good to use when fighting for sport. Its sole purpose is survival, so traditional fighting sports would frown upon it. Plus I'd hate to see wing Chun Willy or TKD Tommy get their necks broken and joints dislocated 😮
