Ikr this topic is so important. Imagine how many idols develop amenorrhea and aren't allowed to talk about it. Amenorrhea is caused by insufficient energy, either not enough calories and/or too much exercise. It's a negative energy balance where your body shuts down all non-essential functions. This is why I hate diet culture. The Kpop industry discourages having a health body fat % necessary for menstruation. Amenorrhea is very dangerous even if you don't want to get pregnant one day. Having amenorrhea hurts your bones, brain and cardiovascular system (heart). It's most common in athletes and those with an ED, but it can happen to anyone on a restrictive diet like Kpop idols.

I can't believe grown adults don't know about this, but the reason why Ashley lost her period was since every month, the body prepares itself to have a baby, when someone isn't receiving enough nutrition (e.g. depriving yourself of food whether it be a restrictive diet or an ed etc.) the body physically cannot prepare itself for a baby as it does not have the sufficient nutrition or energy to do so as it focuses on keeping the body alive with the minimal food it is receiving, instead of preparing for a baby, and therefore becomes temporarily infertile. Ashley didn't lose her period when she went vegan because a vegan lifestyle provides sufficient energy and nutrients an a diet containing animals products (provided someone is take vitamin b12 supplements or eating fortified foods!) Thus, a vegan lifestyle is totally healthy and sustainable in the long run and absolutely does not count as a restrictive diet, hence, allowing the body to function normally/naturally. Sidenote: "diet culture" itself is extremely problematic and I strongly urge anyone who is considering losing weight to do some research on this topic!!

The idol industry and its obsession with weight causes a lot of health issues for these artists. From a medical perspective, it was absolutely the combination of malnourishment, stress and exercise that caused her periods to stop. It's called hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. It often happens to people who exercise a lot like athletes or sufferers of eating disorders.

As a medical student (studying rn to gynecology exam), it was always scary to me how skinny idols are. It is defensive mechanism that you don't have a period when famale body has a fat tissue below 17%, so you can't get pregnant when you're malnourished. Also stress affects hormonal and reproductive system. Loss of period is the most visible symptom, but your whole body changes in a bad way. I bet most female idols loose a period at least once in their career and in my opinion it's a crime on their bodies. I hope one day it'll change.
@Jakota1993

Oh no, not having a period due to restrictive eating is one of the first sign of being severely underweight. It is extremely dangerous for your health and you can develop a loss of bone density. Starving yourself is NOT a diet! It’s extremely dangerous. The fact that kpop companies pressure their trainees into unhealthy (even deadly!!) eating habits is beyond despicable. I dont really like the image society has for people nowadays its just "oh you gotta be skinny you can't be fat or your ugly" etc. This things about expectations and images has actually got to me at moments and its made me be unhealthy and starve myself whenever my parents were never home. It seems as time keeps going people are more pressured to have a NOT fat body, like for females you gotta be skinny waist or just big butt and big chest. For males I dont really know but you may be expected to have abs be strong and muscular. But its not about that. Its all about being healthy and loving yourself and not caring about what your body looks like! Your health is MORE important than others people thoughts about you. ❤ I LUV YOU AND YOU ARE AMAZING! ❤

I love how she can talk to them normally about the 'girl stuff', which most female idols, or females in general, would be uncomfortable sharing. Big props to these three. Hey everyone! Just a reminder Starving yourself is NOT a diet. It’s just starving yourself. Diets are short term changes that help with health. Starvation does not make you healthier. When I had a serious unhealthy relationship with food hearing terms like “starvation diet” did not help me because for me it still implied an attainable and desirable “diet.” Please don’t starve yourself and like Peneil said in the long run that won’t actually help you lose weight if that is your goal. When I stopped I gained 40 pounds in 8 months!!! It’s not an option it’s only unhealthy, not to mention mentally, emotionally, and physically draining. Please seek help! You are worthy and beautiful! (Also being skinny will not make others like you better!! Being a good person will. I became “fat” on purpose to test that theory and it WORKED.)

It is scary, the whole industry and the way companies are dealing with certain things is stupid and really unhealthy. Forcing someone to lose a certain weight in a week should be considered an abuse. Noone should be told to do those things, especially if it can damage your body and fuck up your health in the long run. Ashley said that she was skinny by her own standards, and losing 3 kilos shouldn't even matter. Like, what does someone gain out of it? And the company didn't even tell her how to do it properly, because they most likely didn't know it themselves. G-groups have it especially bad in that aspect, because they show off their bodies more often than not; constantly wearing short skirts or pants that expose their legs. Must be a nightmare.

Indonesian here. Dude, when I went to Japan in early spring in 2019 my period stopped because apparently my body favored doing its best to keep me warm vs menstruating. It wasn't even that cold, like 10-15 degrees Celsius, but i come from a country where 25-35 degrees is the norm, so 🤷🏻‍♀️. My period was semi-absent the month after, and by the 3rd month I still didn't bleed as much as I normally did. So not having period for a whole year??? Must be freaking malnutrition and stress. Former K-pop idol trainees have talked about not getting periods while being trainees, so this really deserves some discussions.

Me and my mother, who is a doctor talked about this topic this morning. According to her, it is true. Uncontrolled stress, intense exercise plus extreme dieting will all result to amenorrhea eventually. The reason is that due to this factors, there is presence of lacking nutrients and blood in your vital organs which is the reason why this will result into amenorrhea. In addition, uncontrolled stress, intense exercise and extreme dieting may also result to hormonal imbalance of gonadotropin which is secreted by your hypothalamus gland for regulating the function of reproductive organs. If these persists, it may lead to hypothalamic amenorrhea. Also, these events, which is under the category of secondary amenorrhea, may soon result into infertility if these are left untreated before reaching ages 30 and up. Common examples of people suffering with this case are patients having anorexia nervosa. Psychiatrists oftentimes diagnose their patients as anorexic (especially females) by asking them about the last time they had their periods. Hope these all helps a lot! 😊

My friend has a similar condition with peniel, when me and my friends go out to eat with her, we spent like more than 2 hours in the restaurants cause she either go to the bathroom in the middle of eating or right away after eating

im glad that they are talking about this because the "ideal" body in kpop or in general is unhealthy and isn't good. like the diet that these idols has to go through is so terrifying and can be dangerous :( the industry must teach their trainees and idols how to diet properly. I'm glad the host has a platform to speak out on these kinds of topics, thank you for your hard work BM, Peniel, and Ashley!!

During my Bachelor degree near the finals I didn't have my period for about 2 to 3 months and I talked about it to my friends and they were the same, we were all so stressed and exhausted plus we didn't eat a lot to save money so all that really f up our metabolism.

I loved that she talked about it. But these guys trying to diagnose her… 😂 well… she doesn’t seem particularly sensitive, it’s completely normal to lose your period under these circumstances (really unhealthy of course) and it can absolutely just come from not eating enough

I've had that same issue ashley have, it's combination or stress and unbalanced hormones in my case. but it's horrible when you get older trust me. but it's very common in women all around the world

honestly as an American, I can tell they're American because they talk about these topics freely. Also wow I feel so bad for Ashley, that's so unhealthy:( and yeah the beginning is pretty true, people don't judge you here as much when it comes to your looks and weight

0:30 I don't agree with Ashley saying over here people don't say you need to lose weight etc cuz almost everyone gets bashed for their weight no matter your size... We may or may not be as bad with it as Korea but yeah.

@Zoey Blagrove not really. I mean yeah we have a lot of body positivity but everyday I'm hearing that my friends are getting either skinny shamed or fat shamed and I am as well. And it's happening to all genders. And constantly being called ugly etc if someone is even just a little bit on either side of what's considered "body goals" or whatever tf

lost mine for 6 months in quarantine because i went into a "diet" eating no fats, carbs or meat. pure vegetables and broth. it's scary. i recently got it back 2 months ago when i slowly reintroduced fats again. im still working on the carbs and meat part tho lol

Ashley!!!! READ the book 📚 In the Flo by Alisa Vitti - it’s all about women’s mensuration and how to help regulate hormones. Seriously every girl and woman should be given this knowledge. it’s an easy read with helpful charts to look at with guides on eating, workouts, and work flow 💕

What Ashley went through is not uncommon among girls but rarely talked about. My sister went through a period of extreme dieting where she ate papayas strictly. She turned literally yellow and didn't get her period for a year.

I just remembered few months ago I watched a video about someone living a healthy lifestyle but she is too obsessed with clean eating and then didn't get her period for few years? idk exactly the number and when she went to psychiatrist, the doctor said she has eating disorder and malnourished.

What Peniel said is exactly true, I read that eating too little in some period then stopping it, will make the body metabolism shocked. When someone eat too little nutritions, the body will work hard to minimize the energy to our body and our body think that it's normal after some time, once the eating habit become normal again, the body will think that you eat too much calories since it was in minimize metabolism mode. Then the weight will gain more than before the diet which is worse..

It sucks that these companies demand so much from these little kids, but don't even teach them the right way to do it (if they themselves even know how to do it).

It's because you lack nutrients when you went on diet that effect period i too didn't got period for 3 months then i went to doctor they told me that i lack nutrients and proteins required by the body i mean protein and nutrients i was taking was not sufficient so they give me like calcium iron and other protein medication i literally had my period very next day...

Just to clarify what Peniel was saying there, I do not think you necessarily gain fat when you go on a starvation you rather lose stored fats in the muscles once the "body goes into the survival mode" Peniel mentioned. In fact research indicates people who used starvation diets for weight loss, eating 50% of their energy needs for three weeks, did decrease their body weight overall. However, they also reduced their lean muscle mass by 5%. If the state of starvation is maintained chronically, lean muscle mass and organ size are decreased which is really bad. Weight loss via starvation will cause you to lose significant amounts of lean muscle mass and Lean Body Mass, which encompasses water, bones, organs, and all that stuff. Reducing the mass of your bones is actually problematic, because decreased bone density can make you more prone to injury. More so, chronic starvation leads to changes in metabolism which is true as BM mentioned. Metabolism and resting metabolic rate are directly linked to Lean Body Mass. Kids do not starve yourselves!!! you are going to gain the weight back anyways which is annoying unless you do it constantly but also this is not recommended. Lets be healthy first before you think about changing anything on yourself.
