My response to misinformation about trans people and transitioning. The kind of information being shared in the TikTok I react to causes harm and is dangerous to spread.
For a small minority, transitioning is not the right thing, but for the vast majority it causes significant life and wellbeing improvements.

"I'm going to try and scare people out of medical transition" "how?" "By reading off a mix of desired effects and straight-up misinformation, and then sweetening the pot with heaping amounts of amatonormativity, stigmatizing infertility, disability, and mental health, and leaning hard into garden-variety body shaming."

@iantaakalla8180
@iantaakalla8180 Год назад
Amatonormativity is a word that describes the assumption that everybody feels romantic love, and the assumptions springing out of that (like people assuming aromantic people are just late bloomers, the compulsion of gift-giving on Valentine Day, the need to show off that you are in a relationship that at least outwardly looks good, that the point of living is to find a romantic partner if not sexual one if not a partner in general, soulmates, etc.)

I couldn't have said it better. You nailed it. I had someone try to scare me out of getting a hysterectomy by telling me I wouldn't be able to have periods or get pregnant. Firstly, duh, that's pretty obvious. And secondly, that's the point! Then it was that men wouldn't want to date me and I'm like "sweet, I don't wanna date them either". Like just keep telling me all these awesome things. Apparently I wouldn't be able to handle the pain. Like dude, I PASS OUT from my CRAMPS I think I can handle it. @emilybastong3896
@emilybastong3896 Год назад
Your "frame" aka your skeleton renews approximately every seven years completely. Some of your blood cells only live only a few days before being replaced, and the very same thing happens in your entire body. Cells die and divide and they will definitely adapt to almost every condition to a point where there will be gen mutation going on so your kids and grandkids can benefit from the adaptations your body made to its environment (this is also known as evolution). Estrogen and testosterone are steroid hormones that affect basically every cell in your body not just your genitals and changing the percentage these hormones occur will lead to changes but your body will adapt to these changes and if you change the percentage again, your body will adapt again. Surgery on the other hand is a lot trickier as things you cut away usually don't grow back (at least on a larger scale like limbs or whole organs, but do you know that there are liver transplantation where you only implant a part of the liver and the whole effing organ grows back?! Our bodies are wild let me tell you...) Anyways my point is that yes your body is highly adaptable, that your mind is highly adaptable, that science especially medicine has centuries of studies under their belt to back up all sorts of procedures but people just are too lazy to listen to science and make up half-truths and down-right lies that they spread and call it "backed up by science" Can you tell I'm frustrated?😂

Proudly Intersex person here. My jaw was hitting the floor because what's very interesting to me about the TikTok video is how most of these are symptoms that some people develop WITHOUT HRT (i.e. due to chronic illness such as endocrine disorders that cause hormone imbalance, and/or being Intersex). The TikTok user is literally describing WHY some people NEED HRT lol. Things that HRT can HELP with if you are Intersex or have another type of hormone imbalance: -Genital pain -Anger issues, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety -Fertility issues (depending on what type of Intersex) -Unhealthy, unmanageable sex drive (either polarity) -Extremely heavy and painful periods -Lubrication problems, erection problems, ejaculation problems, etc. -Uncomfortable distribution of fat and muscle that causes chronic pain (there is nothing wrong with being fat or with not looking like some main character in a Hollywood film, but there are certain distributions of adipose that can cause strain on your skeletal structure; there are different weights, shapes, and sizes that are right and healthy for different people) Like... the parallels are so strong that I wonder if the TikTok user truly did just look at a list of untreated Intersex problems and used that as propaganda. But you also could be right that they maybe just had a terrible experience. Remember... if you can't produce your own hormone balance, store-bought (i.e. prescribed and managed by a doctor) is fine!

I don't understand how one person can have a bad experience and then use that to justify tearing down other people, and scaring them out of a decision that may greatly benefit their life and wellbeing. I'm cis so I obviously can't relate to medically transitioning, but the closest thing in my life is my health issues. A few years ago I experienced heart failure and spent 3 weeks in the ICU. While I was there, I had a truly awful time - there were nurses that mocked and bullied me, called me names, literally *washed my mouth out with soap* ffs. I had a terrible experience. But if someone was having trouble with their heart, would I warn them to never tell a doctor about it? To avoid hospitals at all costs because of the tiny chance they'd have a similar experience? Of course not. I wouldn't use my own rare anecdote to scare others out of seeking medical care because that's wrong and honestly reckless. You're putting vulnerable people in a position where they feel like there are no good options, and that's dangerous for their mental health. You aren't "saving" anyone, you're just spreading fear.

Plus the main nurse who did those things was a pretty senior member of staff and the other nurses covered for each other a lot, so I felt like I'd be laughed out of court without any physical evidence. The reason one of them did the soap thing in the first place is because one nurse was saying really cruel things about my autism and my appearance, and I'm not a good liar (again, autism) so when a doctor came to do rounds on the ward and asked why I'd been crying, I just told the truth. That didn't go down so well with the other nurses. I feel really guilty for not coming forward though, because the thought of it happening to someone else haunts me

I used to follow a particular artist, right up until her series of portraits of de-transitioning women became "No one should transition EVER because of these people." It's one percent. And yes, when you are in that one percent, the number feels huge. There's a one percent chance of blood clots from hormonal birth control pills, up to four if you are a migraine sufferer. I am in that number...just for the record, strokes are terrifying and people think you are drunk instead of sick when you are younger than the usual age for them. HOWEVER. It's still the best option for A LOT of other women. Just not FOR ME. For me, an IUD is the safest option...and that was brutally painful to have inserted. Transitioning needs to be approached on an individual basis, and not as a blanket, "Nobody/everybody needs to do X". Just like any other medical process. Also...I've never had any body parts chopped off and incinerated and I'm STILL stuck with a body that doesn't function.

It couldn’t be more clear that many transitioners are not getting adequate counselling and information prior to commencing treatment. Jamie very obviously got great information before they commenced HRT but they are naive in applying their experience to everyone else’s. Jamie just needs to do a tiny bit of research to understand that a huge number of people aren’t being medically prescribed correctly & ethically. Jamie doesn’t even need to look that far to find people - Blair White was prescribed HRT with little F2F time with their doctor. This video just highlights that Jamie doesn’t understand much about transition around the world. Their immaturity on the topic is astonishing and it’s quite disgusting how they use their platform to ridicule people who are trying to warn others about the effects of HRT, both physical and psychological. Had two kids with my partner who are so far very healthy. Transitioned again in 2020, with better HRT this time, regained my lady curves, and have been very healthy and happy ever since. I'll admit - when I detransed, I went a bit gender critical. I think in hindsight I was so angsty and depressed about my future as a male "cis person". I took it out on the trans community, lashing out a bit, feeling like I had been tricked or duped or that some internal phobia or philia was my true cause of wanting transition. I can almost get how people get this way - luckily my lashing out was limited to a couple of friends who patiently allowed me to work out my grief and confusion and were there for me when I retransitioned. Not my finest hour and I'll own that - glad I stopped short of a public anti-trans soapbox and got my shit sorted. As an asexual, this all sounds very familiar. A lot of aphobic ppl were those who had found the label and due to personal trauma and internalized homophobia, decided to identify as ace. Later, as they grew and found a better label for themselves, they went on to blame asexuals for tricking them into identifying with us, for causing them to delay their self discovery, and more. Its weird af. Sometimes people make choices about their identity and it ends up being wrong. Its not the fault of others who actually have that identity

It is important to share individual stories, I do not understand telling others how to live and not allow other opportunities due to your regret. Heck, I joined roller derby and broke my ankle 1 month in. 9 years later, I still have issues with nerve damage and fluid retention, but I went back to roller derby next training period 5 months later, and I have no regrets about its impact on my life.

I recently found a new gp who has experience with trans people. I will never be able to transition but I started a low dose of estrogen and antidepressants. It has helped me mentally cope with my feelings, and I now feel much better. HRT is a game changer for many even if you don’t go the full transition. I have never felt happier with myself in my 65 yrs of life. I only wish I had found this years ago. Thanks for setting people straight on what is real. Hi Jamie, I'm a Transgender woman in Houston TX. I am extremely happy with my transition. I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to have bottom surgery and feel at one with myself. A feeling completely foreign to me before. It saved my life.. I have a completely functional body. Yes, I can orgasm. I can also have sex/intimacy with no discomfort, no pain, and it feels not only amazing but natural to me. Whereas before sex felt forced and uncomfortably unnatural for me. I tried everything to cater to the world around me to fit in and I couldn't stand being a prisoner in my own body doing what felt comfortable for everyone else but myself because that's what society is ok with.🙄 That being said, this video reminds me of a hostage situation the way she's reading in a monotone voice. No emotion, no passion, no evidence of feelings about it. Just random false information hurting people she assumes feels as she does and will experience things as she did yet again going off assumptions they've created to validate their own choices which didn't work out for her. What gets me is that detransitioners are getting the spotlight and platforms to lie and bash on us. But the other 99% are being silenced and criticized for telling the truth!!! I have a pornhub account for those that don't know and were curious. And there's more on there then just buck angel(horrible person to refer to for any transgender information) who agree about having successful surgeries and experiences that have saved their lives. Society is horrible in general towards transgender women. Miss information like these jerks are selling into, like their on a mission, is making things so much harder on us and so much easier for society to bash us and treat us like we're a lower class of human that deserves no fair treatment or rights. This was a petty video made to hurt the transgender community for the sake of validating their own bad experience. It gives the, "if I can't be happy nobody can be happy" type of vibe. And honestly I would not be surprised if the majority detransitioners speaking up like this are getting paid to do so. Im sorry, I can't respect that type of person. I don't care how bad their experience was. You don't hurt other people to feel better about yourself. It doesn't take much to get your facts right with a 2 min google search. This person clearly didn't have their heart into what they were saying. Thank you for everything you do Jaimie, Emma Angel

Throwing accusations around without actually knowing anything about said person or persons, or having any proof to suggest an immoral compass about an individuals statements. But I will say it is very sad seeing this happen over and over again. Individuals blindly making their way through life (as a tool), hurting, and rationalizing the degradation of other people for their own selfish, lazy, inconsiderate, and ignorant struggle for control over other people's lives. Like a security blanket of lies and cruelty to feel some sort of significance. Was there anything else you wanted to say that isn't regurgitated transphobia or is misgendering me the best you got? I then took myself off of estrogen because of the increased stroke risk it creates (stroke runs in my family). That was 12 years ago, and I'm fine. I haven't re-masculinized at all, from what I can tell. I might be a bit weaker overall after discontinuing estrogen (I noticed a dropoff in arm strength), but not in a way that impacts my life at all, at least so far. My doctors have never told me I should resume estrogen, as I seem to be healthy. The only other notable side effect seems to be less body odor overall, with which I'm perfectly fine. (And yes, I can still orgasm.) Based on my anecdotal experience, I'm not sure why they say you have to be on one or the other hormone for the rest of your life.

Every single provider made sure that I understand that any surgeries I have are irreversible. They made it very clear that the hormones will cause some changes and not have as much impact on other things. Because I have a problem with memory sometimes, I brought someone with me to several appointments because I needed to make sure that I understood what was being told to me. I'm sorry that they had a horrible experience, and it's important that people hear about the bad experiences as well as the good ones. Even before I started T, I had been socially transitioned FTM for years, and had done literally 1,000's of hours of research on it, and before starting T my doctor ensured that I was more than aware of what I was doing, and did an extensive medical check, and I routinely get my levels checked and keep in contact with my medical team to ensure that everything is good.

Conveyor belt? Huh?! The language of this whole thing sounds like a creepy parody of some sort. That said, transition isn't even that easy to get as the original video implies. I have considered it but didn't have the money at the time - now I do, but in the meantime I figured out that there is a better solution for me. _For me._ That discovery didn't make me arrogant enough to assume that I know what is right for anyone else, however. This is the kind of stuff that each of us has to figure out on their own. (Which is tough af, especially considering how abusive and just... evil... shrinks tend to be, and in most countries they are a mandatory checkpoint for transitioning. Incidentally, this was one of the reasons why I decided to go with self-checkout instead.) I don't wanna victim-blame but something feels *really* off about the original video. Is this even real? It's probably closer to 30%. Hence all of the "jokes" about having kids And all of the broken kids.

The way I see it, the transition process can be a gamble either way. It's true that some people may have regrets, and stopping might have side-effects. However, NOT medically transitioning can be just as much of a gamble. Waiting too long to start transitioning can have mental health effects that are just as harmful, if not worse, than the physical effects of transitioning. So while it's not something to be taken lightly, you can't just say "Oh, but think about the irreversible side-effects!" without considering the side-effects of a delayed transition as well.

Thank you so much for this! I've been dealing with a family member who's fallen for a lot of misinformation about trans people transitioning and grooming and shit from facebook and I've been looking for some good recourses and information to give them so maybe they can be informed. They got a lot of their info from de-transitioners like this, so it's gonna be great to show them someone breaking down these arguments and presenting the real facts and I really appreciate it!

The thing that gets me is no one cares if I were to go get a boob job simply because my gender aligns with my sex. No one is suggesting I shouldn't get one because I might regret it. I might feel bad even though most people repory feeling better about their bodies. That there could be complication. Or it is irreversible. Etc. It's do your research, avoid going overseas because it's cheaper for a reason. Research your surgeon. Do as suggested by your doctor to help with healing. Not fear mongering. If I'm allowed to get a boob job then a trans person should be able to get the hormonal therapy they need, or the surgery they need.

You are allowed to pay for your boob job. But in many countries the boob jobs and other plastic surgeries of trans people are payed by the taxpayers by now and many of them are just AGPs.
