I learned through detailing my cars and family/friends on the last 10 years, that you can never get 100% paint correction. If I get between 85-90% paint correction, I am extremely.happy.

@@ForensicDetailing When my family/friends get their car it is a night and day difference, it is mostly because they never maintained the paint well. So, when they get it, the remaining defects are overlooked, because they never had their car in that condition.

Now this is a detailing channel. I highly respect your channel and also towards the end saying how it was disastrous when you first used a rotary and then switched over to the DA's. It's good to know that there are other detailers that briefly mention their past mistakes and explain how you learned on your own to use the rotary. I appreciate your channel. Keep the vids coming. Have you done any videos on the windshield coatings? I know you use some of Tac system's products and i find that their rain coat and view coat windshield coating is really good.

Great video, Jon. 👍I use both rotary and da polishers. I learnt to machine polish 15 years ago and stepped up to the rotary to speed up the process as a pc7424 was the only da I had at the time. I still use my Chicago full size rotary (Milwaukee sub brand) to this day and my favourite polisher is probably my Shine Mate mini rotary. I bought this as a kit from Clean Your Car, plus the extension kit. Absolutely fantastic value and very smooth and light, I can get into all the areas I want. A massive saving over the ibrid nano. 👍

You've got no idea how much i want to start polishing my car. 1st, because it really needs it, and 2nd pretty much because that'll be something new for me, and i love that. But at the same time, all the options we get on the market nowadays when it comes to machine polishers, compounds, pads, etc is a bit overwhelming. Maybe im just, you know, overthinking when it comes to this. Tbf i think you really have to. So yeah, im a bit stuck in the middle of this. 😅 Great vid as usual.

Long retired now but when I worked in a very busy body shop, we used to do heavy crash repairs for insurance companies.The paintwork would involve anything from a single panel repaint to a whole vehicle respray.A DA then,was only used for flatting paintwork ready for primer and for filler work.All paintwork polishing was the sole domain of the rotary mop.The method we would use is somewhat different to your method in that water was used as we were mopping with the compound, the reason we used water was to keep the panel cool but mainly to significantly increase the quality of the finish and hardness of the the finish.You would probably find this next step difficult to swallow,we then washed the car with cold water to remove the compound spatter,car was then dried and waxed.The result was a car that looked wet.( This method was used by many top class car manufacturers of the time) Try it on a scrap panel,your not going to learn it over night but once learned you probably won't use a DA again.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 3 года назад
I learned how to polish a car initially from watching someone in a body shop do exactly what you describe. He had his rotary, and an apron on and in the pocket of the apron a trigger sprayer with water in it. he would tilt the rotary in the paint he would mist the pad and work the rotary at an angle and move the machine slowly over the panel. When the compound dried up he with loosen it with water. before watching him I use to decimate panels without having a single clue what I was doing. However, most modern abrasives now dont "take" water. You will disrupt them if you try and add water and stop them from working properly. Also now the DAT technology has moved on. You dont want to heat the paint up. Buffer tails wont always appear instantly. polishing also packs the paint out with the oils and glycols in the compound and masks holograms and machine marring, that you will see come out in future washes when the car soap breaks down the oils and all the oils that are packed into the structure of the paint flush out the paintwork contracts (*credit yvan lacroix) and shows the fine marring (aka buffer trails). this is the reasons lots of cars go out looking half good only for buffer trails to appear later on, and its the reason 99% of dealership forcourt cars are plastered in buffer trails. the guy installing them cant see them at the time of polishing. I know most of the bodyshops in my area. I respect what they do massivly they know how to lay out paint and they have skills I dont have. But they cant polish paint (or finishing it out to a high standard).. NONE of them. even the guys that did an amazing job recently on my car, 80% of the car has been mopped out well but under the light and after that first wash I find buffer trails and sanding marks. down one entire side and rear quarter and bootlid. he started rushing I think and also from not cleaning out the pad you introduce more heat from old spent dry polish. so it started good and got bad I can see exactly what happened. Heres my opinion. If you cut paint with a rotary. basically you HAVE to finish it out (there are exceptions to this) but generally speaking that rule applies. body shops do not understand this. Its much easier to finish out paint on a DA really. rotary as well as buffer trails, tends to sling a lot more and the chances of making mess go up. specially misting water onto loosen compound that would create sling badly (its one of the reasons I moved to using DA's because I made a mess). I got into polishing from getting a better price from paint shops for un'mopped panels I had refinished because I used to do project collision repair (copart, motorhog, hbc etc you know the game, this was back when it was good and you could get proper bargains, nowadays salvage auctions are ruined by idiots paying stupid money)

I think testing on a scrap panel a few times, or - as in my case, on glass shower doors with calcium stains - is a good idea to get a grip/understanding of how a rotary seems to "fight" you, and how to handle that/get the technique right. I also noticed that, indeed, the smaller the pad, the easier it is to work with. I have done small sections on my car as a test - where you can't reach with a DA anyway - and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Sure, you need common sense and know the risks. I'm not completely ready yet to do the whole car and tend to fall back on the DA as a comfort blanket, but I can see how, once you really get the hang of it, you'd never want to cut with a DA again.

Jon really nice rotor polisher! Flex! The Bentley of polishers! I started out with a rotary polisher! It's a good thing! Light pressure and let it glide! On the first pass. Then let up and let the weight of the polisher do the rest. As for scratches. 3k or 5k wet sand very lightly. Your car looks fantastic!

There are marks all over my vehicle that can come out with a good polish, I just leave them. I maintain shine and gloss with a jeweling polish or CarPro Essence on low speed. However, with 175k miles, preservation is the name of the game. Then again, with proper maintenance, I really only need to polish my car once a year or once a year and a half.

Hi fella, You’ve probably covered it before, but I’m trying to get my head around the various “cut” polishes available on the market. Is there much difference between heavier cuts, compared to lighter cuts? If so, roughly how many heavier cut polishes can a paint finish take before negatively effecting the clear/paint coats - compared to a lighter cut? (I respect this will be hard to answer due to the amount of variables). Thank you for the great content as ever!

Love this video. I am a strong believer in a rotary and that is what I learnt with. its not hard your right Mas. I think its like plastering a wall though, if you try it with no idea things will go wrong.. if someone tells you a good starting method that can get you half decent results and you are up and running and learning. The rotary definitely has its place. But a good 15 mm or even a 9 mm like the griots G9 With a 1000 Watts will definitely get the job done. Great video as always John.

ripping question. sometimes in my opinion the likely hood of machine induced maring is increased with rotary, yes low speeds and soft foam pads can mitigate this but they may comparmise your cut with a single stage. most times a rotary can be fine for a single stage if you find the right pad and product combo.. but with some soft paints a DA might just be less hassle. short answer is yes though.

was it a 5 door? if so the front doors are smaller than a 3 door, there is also a comfort entry button that auto winds the window half way down when opening the door

ace walsall yeah it is a 5 door, what difference does opening the window make?

yer its a pretty small car. Im pretty big though and I can get in alright.. I dont notice any difference with the m140 and the golf though really.

@@gillywash1487 hard to explain without visuals, but a 3 door has pillar-less front doors as opposed to a 5 door, so when the window is down it gives you a bit more swing/lean in access, i'm trying to find a video which explains it better than i can here.

Forensic Detailing Channel I had a mk6 5 door golf for a while and can’t remember it being as cramped, perhaps I’m a weird shape and it just doesn’t fit me. Also it’s been given to me filthy inside and out 🤢 that doesn’t make me feel comfortable in it either I guess, I only have it a week but am going to have to give it a quick wash in the morning. Probably just snow foam and blast the outside and hoover and wipe around the cockpit at the very least... bringing out any old dodgy budget products I have not wasting my good stuff lol

Hi what do you do with stone chips?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 4 года назад
i leave them Tim.. rather than spending like 50 quid on a kit and countless hours messing around.. you will constantly get stone chips I think its just better to have the front bumper and bonnet repainted every 5 years. I will do a video on touch ups, not everyone agrees

Why chase perfection when it’s just gonna get swirly after a few washes

LOUi TUBE no matter how u try .. it will get swirled and scratched ... you get scratches just bu driving your car on the motorway from the pressure of air pushing dust particles and dragging them across your car.

LOUi TUBE keyword you said: “to an extent” and after a long period of that “to an extent” swirling; your car will be swirled again 😀

Chris Downing. Yes, they’re claw scratches. Either a dog or possibly a fox. I had that problem with a fox that wanted to sleep on top of my cabriolet roof. It’s why I now cover and garage my weekend toy.
